The Royal Crown Prince or king must be riddled with dark omens of dethronement or political chaos within the palace. Amid the darkness, there is a shining light of unsuspecting true love with the female lead. Over the years, historical K-dramas have had some bonuses like gender-bender love like The King’s Affection. Here are some of the best historical romance K-dramas to binge-watch.

2022 was finally the year that the Korean box office, after the pandemic, was defibrillated back to life. Producers and distributors were finally confident that the time was right for big budget, blockbuster projects, that had long been queueing up for a release, to start making their way to the theatres. After having to resort to Ott streaming and generally smaller scale films, the audience too was hungry to see high-value productions, entertainment and their favorite stars on the big screen and thronged to the theatres, lapping up these releases. So much so that 2022 saw four new films make their way into the 100 highest grossing Korean films of all tie at the domestic box-office, with Ma Dong-seok’s “The Roundup” even rolling comfortably into the top 10.
2023 too began strongly, with the long-in-production “The Point Men” starring Hwang Jung-min and Hyun Bin and the Sol Kyung-gu led ensemble spy thriller “Phantom” opening the year strong.

I was lucky enough to see The Witch Part 1: The Subversion as part of my coverage for Glasgow Frightfest back in 2019. It was my favourite movie of the festival and was the perfect action horror movie. I can only assume the delay in the sequel was because of the pandemic but in truth, three years isn’t too much of a wait!
A girl is the lone survivor after an attack on a research facility. Covered in blood and left for dead she walks through the woods and into the life of Kyung-hee. She is struggling herself, as, alongside her brother, is trying to keep her farmland away from local gangsters. Gory and absorbing sci-fi sequel is part Stranger Things, part Orphan Black and all action, with a ridiculously good-looking and super-cool cast
This expansive but absorbing sequel to the 2018 sci-fi horror feature The Witch: Part 1 presents, as its extra subtitle The Other One, which might suggest a narrative centred on another young “witch”. The first film’s central figure Ja-yoon began to exercise her telekinetic powers only two-thirds of the way into Part 1’s narrative. However, Part 2’s heroine Ark 1 (Shin Sia-ah) is, from the off, able to throw whole cars around and beat people up psychically, having been raised in a secret facility where her superpowers were genetically implanted from birth. But Ark 1 was never socialised like Ja-yoon, the latter having been adopted by kindly if elderly normie farmers at a young age, so a lot of the time is spent watching Ark 1 adapt to regular life after she...

"She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" might technically be a half-hour legal comedy on paper, but it's so much more in practice. Because its titular attorney also happens to have superpowers — and is (more or less) a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — "She-Hulk" is also a superhero show. And because Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) is also a thirty-something working girl, the series also has to juggle her duties (and desires) as a normal, human woman with all the superhero hijinks that ensue. All this combined leaves little room for She-Hulk to dominate in the courtroom.
At the end of the day, "She-Hulk" is less a legal comedy about a superhero than it is a superhero show about a lawyer. This switch has a lot to do with the series writers who, according to Jessica Gao, weren't as adept at creating those "rousing trial scenes" that fans may have expected The case-of-the-week...

Fans of Netflix‘s Extraordinary Attorney Woo will be happy as the popular K-drama is coming back for a second season, though it seems viewers will have to wait until 2024. The series follows 27-year-old Woo Young Woo (Park Eun-bin), a lawyer and Seoul National University law school graduate with an impressive memory, amazingly creative thought process, and a 164 Iq score. She also has autism, and the show breaks down misconceptions of autistic people lacking ‘social skills’ and ‘emotional intelligence.’ Extraordinary Attorney Woo recently wrapped its first season, amassing the seventh highest audience for a show in Korean cable history. It also set the record for the highest ratings in the history of the Korean network Ena. It has had similar success on Netflix, where in its seventh week of global streaming, it was the most watched series around the world and has become the streamer’s eighth most-watched non-English series of all time.

In its seventh week on the platform, “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” has taken over the Netflix Top 10 chart. With 77.4 million hours watched, the series was Netflix’s most-viewed title during the Aug. 15-21 viewing window — racking up more hours viewed than Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman,” which was the most-viewed title the previous two weeks.
“Extraordinary Attorney Woo” follows Woo Young-woo (Park Eun-bin), a lawyer with autism, whose eidetic memory helps her succeed at a large law firm as she also navigates difficult social interactions.
“The Sandman” still sits at the top on the English-language chart for the third consecutive week, garnering 77.2 million hours watched over the last week. This marks a drop from last week’s 127.5 million hours as the series has now had its second full week of availability on the platform. Its continued No. 1 status is partially due to “A Dream of a Thousand Cats”/”Calliope,” a bonus...

Legal drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” is living up to its name following its international success on Netflix.
Domestic Korean audiences for the series have spiked, in line with its streaming growth.
The drama stars Park Eun Bin as a young female lawyer with Asperger’s syndrome who, thanks to her powerhouse 164 Iq, exceptional memory and creative thinking processes, graduates top of her class. When she joins a major law firm, she uses her particular skills to deliver results that others would not be able to achieve. But she still struggles with social interactions.
Already the top non-English-language series globally on Netflix for the past two weeks, the show claimed a 13.1 share of the Korean TV audience last Thursday, halfway through its 16-episode run. That was a nationwide audience of 3.4 million viewers, according to data from Nielsen Korea, cited by Content Asia. The season’s production budget is reported to be...

When Park Hoon-jung released a film about a young girl escaping an experimental facility with superpowers and taking revenge years later and ambitiously added a “Part 1” in the title, little did he or his fans know that there would be a time when his follow up to “The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion” would be stuck in limbo with a strong possibility of not coming to fruition at all. However, the ceasing of all activities by Warner Bros. in Korea, the production house that Park called home for a couple features, merely delayed the release of the second part, as the prolific director soon found new patronage at Next Entertainment World, who immediately greenlit the sequel, making it the first product of their collaboration with the director.
