Alec Baldwin’s lawyers asked a judge on Thursday to throw out his manslaughter case, accusing prosecutors of “violating nearly every rule in the book” in the course of obtaining an indictment.
The attorneys argued that prosecutors leaked information to the press, failed to present exculpatory evidence to the grand jury, and gave a faulty jury instruction on involuntary manslaughter that “stacked the deck” against Baldwin.
“Enough is enough,” the lawyers wrote. “This is an abuse of the system, and an abuse of an innocent person whose rights have been trampled to the extreme.”
Baldwin was indicted in January and is scheduled to face a trial on July 9 in Santa Fe, N.M.
He is accused of criminal negligence for allegedly pointing a gun at “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and pulling the trigger. Baldwin was unaware that the gun was loaded with a live bullet. Hutchins was killed and the film’s director,...

A year and a half after the fatal shooting of its cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the Alec Baldwin Western “Rust” is back on the market at the Cannes Film Festival, shopping for international buyers.
Last month, “Rust” resumed shooting in Montana to finish the independently financed production that shut down following Hutchins’ death in October 2021. Matthew Hutchins, her widower, is serving as an executive producer on the film as part of a settlement over a wrongful death lawsuit.
The Cannes film market, which is in centreed in the Palais des Festivals but has no relation to the official festival lineup, is where “Rust” was first formed as a production in 2000. Goodfellas, a sales company formerly known as Wild Bunch International, is handling sales.

Alec Baldwin’s Western film Rust is set to begin filming again this week, according to a representative for the production company. Rust Move Productions attorney Melina Spadone said work on the movie will resume today, 18 months after Baldwin fatally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on set.
Baldwin will continue his involvement as an actor and co-producer. Montana’s Yellowstone Film Ranch will be used instead of the original location in New Mexico, where the shooting took place. Earlier this year, it was announced that Bianca Cline will take over as cinematographer.

As he weathers his own personal storm over Rust, Alec Baldwin’s disaster film Supercell hit video-on-demand and opened in a smattering of independent cinemas with little fanfare over the March 17-19 weekend. A star like Baldwin can be a distributor’s biggest asset in the cash-strapped indie world where marketing money quickly evaporates. In this case, however, Baldwin has not done any press for the film (he did post about it on Instagram).
The Twister-esque film is noteworthy in that it marks a prior collaboration between Baldwin and several producers that later went on to make Rust, where Baldwin accidentally discharged a prop gun that ultimately killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, igniting widespread conversations around set safety and indie film business practices. Baldwin faces an involuntary manslaughter charge due to his involvement in the fatal shooting. (Baldwin has pleaded not guilty.)

Alec Baldwin is proving his VOD bankability is not rusty one bit.
Baldwin’s latest film “Supercell” debuted in the top 10 on iTunes, marking the actor’s first movie released since the fatal October 2021 shooting on the “Rust” set. Baldwin is currently facing manslaughter charges in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. “Rust” producer Anjul Nigam and actor Baldwin’s production banner Persona Entertainment is also behind “Supercell,” with Nigam credited as an executive producer.
“Supercell” only grossed under $8,000 in theaters since its March 17 day-and-date release on VOD. Directed by Herbert James Winterstern from a script co-written by Anna Elizabeth James, “Supercell” follows a teenage boy (Daniel Diemer) who tries to save his storm-chasing father’s legacy from a corrupt local tourism business. Baldwin portrays the film’s profit-hungry villain, Zane Rogers.

Alec Baldwin has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection to the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film Rust in 2021.
Baldwin entered his plea on Thursday, waiving his right to a first appearance in court, according to documents obtained by Rolling Stone. The actor remains free without having to post a bond.
He faces up to 18 months in prison if convicted of the involuntary manslaughter charge. Hannah Gutierrez Reed, who supplied the weapons on the set of the independent film, was also charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Investigators spent more than a year sorting out blame for the death of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer killed on the set of “Rust.” In the end, two agencies came to two sharply different conclusions about Alec Baldwin’s level of responsibility as a producer of the film.
Prosecutors charged Baldwin for firing the gun that killed Hutchins, but also for management failures that created a hazardous set.
“We believe Baldwin, as a producer, knows everything that goes on, on the set,” prosecutor Andrea Reeb said on Fox News’ “The Five” last month. “There were a lot of safety concerns that were brought to the attention of management, and he did nothing about it.”
But in a parallel proceeding, the New Mexico division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration found that Baldwin was not in charge and was not the one culpable for lax oversight.

Alec Baldwin is facing another lawsuit in connection with his role in the October 2021 fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust, this time from her parents and sister, lawyers for the family said on Thursday.
Rust Movie Productions and other production companies — including El Dorado Pictures, Thomasville Pictures, Brittany House Pictures and Short Porch Pictures — involved with the low-budget Western were also named in the complaint in addition to armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, assistant director David Halls, props master Sarah Zachry and ammunition supplier Seth Kenney. In October, Hutchins’ husband and son settled a wrongful death suit against Baldwin and the film’s producers. The parties in the new suit weren’t a part of the deal.
“I’d like those who are at fault to carry responsibility and not just someone, but that very someone who is truly responsible for this,” said Hutchins’ sister. “I believe...

Cokie the Bear was more than ready for her close-up with Elizabeth Banks for Variety’s “Cocaine Bear” cover. However, no real bears were involved in the creation of these images.
She is the computer-generated handiwork of photographer Art Streiber and a team of eight visual effects experts from Weta FX, who created the bear for the film.
Over the span of two weeks, Streiber and Weta FX VFX supervisor Robin Hollander created a storyline for the photos, from Cokie having her nose powdered to a glamorous red carpet moment.
“This was fun to see how to capture the essence of Cokie and instill it in single images,” Hollander says. He adds, “We didn’t want Cokie to look like a villain — she’s not inherently aggressive.”

Actor Michael Shannon raged against low production budgets when asked about the recent charges facing Alec Baldwin over the death of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Hutchins was killed in October 2021 after a prop gun held by Baldwin discharged a real bullet, injuring director Joel Souza before fatally wounding Hutchins.
Last week, it was announced that Baldwin and the film’s armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed would each be charged with involuntary manslaughter, while first assistant director David Halls has agreed to plead guilty to the charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon.
In an interview with The Chicago Tribune, Shannon spoke about the case in light of his directorial debut Eric Larue, which deals with the aftermath of a school shooting.
“It’s not a sloppy procedure, in my experience. It’s very, very meticulous,” Shannon said about gun handling procedures on movie sets.

It’s one of the darkest tales in Hollywood memory. A group of producers — a few whose track records included opaque financing, withholding payments and dangerous on-set working conditions — mount a Western movie on which their star and fellow producer accidentally shoots to death the cinematographer midway through filming. We’ve learned he will soon be charged with involuntary manslaughter, alongside the inexperienced and overwhelmed young armorer they hired to mind the guns (both have indicated they will contest the charges). Meanwhile, the assistant director, who’d been subject to prior safety and other workplace complaints, including on one of the producers’ previous projects, signs a plea agreement for the charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon.

Christian Bale plays an 1830s detective tasked with solving a series of grisly, possibly cult-related murders in Netflix’s ice-cold thriller, “The Pale Blue Eye.” Watch the first trailer above.
Scott Cooper’s film, which the streamer acquired last year in a 55 million deal, takes place at West Point Academy, a military training school. When a cadet turns up dead, its leadership turns to Augustus Landor (Bale) for help – a local detective who, if rumors are true, “once elicited a confession with nothing more than a piercing look”.
The trailer opens on a wintry landscape, where Landor contemplates the crime at hand – a soldier has been hanged, with his heart expertly cut out from his chest.

For the last few years, Emily Salveson has been touting a new model for investing in film. In interviews and in public appearances, she has said that the model was able to “solve the problem of risk” for investors.
It’s a pitch that’s been heard before in the film industry, and it tends to end badly. But her company, Streamline Global, has nevertheless come from nowhere to help finance more than two dozen films in the last four years. The script supervisor on “Rust” filed a lawsuit against star Alec Baldwin and the film’s producers on Wednesday, saying she suffered both “physical and emotional” injuries when Baldwin shot the film’s cinematographer while preparing for a scene.
Mamie Mitchell filed the suit in the Los Angeles Superior Court and is represented by attorney Gloria Allred. In the complaint, she says she was standing just four feet from Baldwin when the gun went off.
“Plaintiff was terrified and feared for her life,” the suit states. “The gunshot caused Plaintiff to experience pain in her ears and head and, shortly thereafter, Plaintiff began to hear loud ringing in her ears. Soon after, Plaintiff witnessed the horror of what had occurred.”

Deadline has confirmed that Matthew Hutchins, the husband of late Rust Dp Halyna Hutchins, has hired L.A.-based firm Panish Shea Boyle Ravipudi, which specializes in personal injury and wrongful death litigation, with partner Brian Panish acting as lead counsel.
A rep for the firm would not comment on Matthew Hutchins’ legal plans are going forward against the production, however, it would not be shocking if a wrongful death suit is filed.
Halyna Hutchins was shot by a prop gun discharged by Alec Baldwin on the Bonanza Creek Ranch set of Rust on Oct. 21, outside Santa Fe, Nm. Hutchins in addition to her husband is survived by her 9-year-old son, Andros.
The Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate how a live round wound up in what was called a “cold gun” by the film’s First Assistant Director David Halls, who handed it off to Baldwin for a quick-draw scene.

The possibility of criminal charges resulting from the tragic death on the set of “Rust” is coming into focus as the industry grapples with the fallout from the Oct. 21 gun accident that left 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins dead.
The investigations by authorities in Santa Fe, N.M., are looking deeper into what went wrong on the Bonanza Creek Ranch set outside the city where the Alec Baldwin indie Western was in the midst of a 21-day shoot.
Santa Fe County authorities, including Sheriff Adan Mendoza and District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, are expected to fill in some details about the incident in a news conference on the case set for today at 9 a.m. Pt. But Carmack-Altwies has also warned the probe will still take weeks.
Authorities have issued two search warrants to retrieve items from the ranch, including spent casings from the blanks used in guns on the set and swabs of blood.

The details of what went horribly wrong on the New Mexico set of “Rust” will be gathered in the coming weeks through multiple public and private investigations.
But as production veterans grappled with the tragic news that cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed Oct. 21 in a gun accident on the set involving star Alec Baldwin, knowledgeable sources pointed to a number of concerning industry trends that are reflected in the behind-the-scenes story of the low-budget independent Western.
Inexperience among crew members: The huge spike in the demand for content during the past decade has stretched below-the-line talent beyond its breaking point. “In some places you can’t find qualified people for these jobs so you are taking (crew) with very little experience,” said a veteran producer.
