We’re deep into 2024 territory as of the time of writing, but our good friends and Deadline have decided to go back to last year and reveal the biggest box office bombs of 2023. It was a short trip down memory lane, but it was done properly because all the numbers were finally in, and there was enough time to objectively interpret the facts and numbers before us. This is why we decided to report on this list.
The list contains five titles and we are going to reveal them to you, as well as all the relevant numbers. Long story short, out of the five titles on this list, four belong to Disney/MCU and one to Warner, so it seems that Disney is undoubtedly the biggest loser of 2023, especially since some of the titles in question are major ones. Now, let us start!

Pop quiz hot shot: What’s the best action movie of the past 20 or 30 years that never received a cinematic sequel? Nope, it’s not Speed. Is it Wanted? Nobody? The Accountant? How about Knight and Day or American Made? While the latter comes from director Doug Liman, we’d argue that the correct answer is Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Liman’s eminently watchable assassin thriller that continues to shine thanks to the explosive chemistry between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, two luminous movie stars who met and fell in love during production. Although the movie earned decent reviews and grossed nearly half a billion dollars worldwide, Mr. & Mrs. Smith never received an official sequel or cinematic spinoff and is often remembered for the juicy tabloid gossip surrounding its two superstars.
Yet, in 2024, a small-screen adaptation of Liman’s hit action flick has been produced by Amazon Prime Video,...

In the wake of his Oscar win for Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy has added another role to his increasingly busy slate – the period drama Blood Runs Coal.
With the odd exception, Oscar-winning actors don’t tend to be short of work in the wake of winning the coveted gong, and the same seems true for Cillian Murphy. In fairness, the actor’s schedule was already pretty busy, but he’s added another project to his slate that will see him produce and star in another take on a non-fiction story.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy has signed up to star in Blood Runs Coal, an adaptation of the book of the same name. Universal is backing the project, which has been penned by Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth who previously co-wrote Edge Of Tomorrow together. No director has been named yet.

Fresh off his Oscar win for Oppenheimer, Deadline reports that Cillian Murphy has set up one of his next projects, a feature adaptation of Blood Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America by Mark A. Bradley.
Blood Runs Coal takes place in the late 1960s and will feature Cillian Murphy playing Chip Yablonski, a labor attorney who fights to get justice for his father, Jock Yablonski. The elder Yablonski was a second-generation coal miner and activist who fought for better working conditions and health benefits for his fellow miners. However, he butted heads with union president Tony Boyle, and when Yablonski decided to run against him, Boyle used embezzled union funds to order the murder of his opponent. Yablonski was killed, along with his wife and daughter, with Chip Yablonski barely escaping the same fate as he had left the house the day prior.

Cillian Murphy is once again mining the non-fiction space for his work. After winning a best actor Oscar for Oppenheimer, the actor is attached to star in and produce Blood Runs Coal, an adaptation of the non-fiction book that Universal has acquired.
The project is based on the 2020 book Blood Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America. Author Mark A. Bradley’s book follows the 1969 murder of mining union organizer Joseph “Jock” Yablonski, who was killed at home with his wife and daughter. The killings followed Yablonski campaigning against a corrupt union leader, and sparked a lengthy investigation that unveiled shady dealings within the coal industry.
John Davis and Jordan Davis will produce via Davis Entertainment. Murphy and Alan Moloney will produce via Big Things Films. Bradley will executive produce.

Exclusive: Two nights before Cillian Murphy won the Best Actor Oscar for the Universal Pictures blockbuster Oppenheimer, the studio completed a pre-emptive acquisition for the Mark A. Bradley book Blood Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America. It’s an epic story of a corrupt union leader who murders a rival and is taken down by the lawyer son of the slain coal miner. It will be scripted as a starring and producing vehicle for Murphy.
Jez Butterworth will write the script with John-Henry Butterworth. That duo worked together on Edge of Tomorrow. There is a lot here for them to mine.

Doug Liman's epic sci-fi adventure "Edge of Tomorrow" (aka "Live Die Repeat") remains one of the great underappreciated event films of the last decade. Featuring solid performances from Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt and a sharp script from Christopher McQuarrie, Jez Butterworth, and John-Henry Butterworth, the 2014 spectacle is a compelling and even enthralling piece of entertainment.
The story, based on the novel "All You Need is Kill" by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, follows public affairs officer Major William Cage (Cruise), who inexplicably gets caught up in a war between humanity and an invading alien force. After dying on the battlefield, Cage wakes up the day before and quickly realizes he is somehow reliving the same day over and over again, resetting each time he gets killed. He then teams up with Sergeant Rita Vrataski (Blunt) to figure out the cause of his condition and the best way to utilize it against the aliens.

Ford’s iconic character is, of course, famous for being afraid of snakes, making the naming of a snake after the actor a fitting joke and tribute, though he has some qualms about it.
“These scientists keep naming critters after me, but it’s always the ones that terrify children,” the actor joked in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t understand. I spend my free time cross-stitching. I sing lullabies to my basil plants, so they won’t fear the night.”

Indiana Jones gets punched in the face. That’s how director James Mangold decided to end Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth and final movie about the adventurous archaeologist. For some, the ending is the ultimate sign of disrespect, in which a broken Indy begs to be left in the past with Archimedes, only to get knocked out and dragged to the present by his goddaughter Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge). Others found it to be a bit of a stretch, taking Dr. Jones out of his element via time travel, and throwing him into an unfamiliar past with the aid of another wild MacGuffin.
But for Mangold, the ending was the only way to close out the final movie in a franchise that began in 1981. Giving Indy access to a time-travel device and then letting him...

[This story contains spoilers for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.]
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold is glad he not only met his heroes but collaborated with them, too.
Dial of Destiny is Mangold’s twelfth feature film, but it was his second film, Cop Land (1997), that prepared him most for the job nearly three decades later. Cop Land boasted a cast of Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel and Ray Liotta among others, and this experience conditioned the New York filmmaker for his current working relationships alongside industry titans such as Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, George Lucas, John Williams, Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy. Mangold certainly anticipated moments where one of these heavy hitters would pull rank, but he was pleasantly surprised when just the opposite happened.
“One of the reasons I agreed to make the movie was because these Mount Rushmore figures of motion picture history...

Indiana Jones is back. This time around he’s back to fight nazis and chase down another McGuffin. It’s a fun entry into the Indy series that you can’t help but think could have been so much more…
There’s a rhythm missing to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and a beat that it doesn’t quite hit. It’s like all the elements are there, just not quite ticking at the right speed, like the beat is just off and it’s knocking the rest of the dance off-rhythm. Sunday Am Writethru Final after Saturday Am Update: Even though Disney/Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is looking to hit the bottom rung of its tracking projection of $60M Sunday morning, there’s no question this is a disastrous result for the finale to a historically beloved franchise film. C’mon, Indiana Jones is one of the reasons Disney shelled out $4 billion for Lucasfilm. Global start here at $130M, is $10M less than what we were seeing; Nancy will have more. The fan-loathed Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had a $272.1M global start, unadjusted for inflation/currency swings back in 2008.
A few things to stomach: Not only did 2018’s Star Wars spinoff bomb Solo open higher than Dial of Destiny, with $84.4M 3-day/$103M 4-day, but so did Paramount’s seventhquel Transformers: Rise of the Beasts ($61M) in May.
How could Disney and Lucasfilm mess this up?...

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments, including the ending, of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” currently playing in theaters.
When director James Mangold started writing “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” with screenwriters Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, he didn’t know how the movie was going to end. Mangold inherited the film from director Steven Spielberg, who had been developing the project for three years with screenwriter David Koepp. When Mangold took over, he and the Butterworths started effectively from scratch, crafting a story in which Harrison Ford’s titular archeologist and Nazi puncher contends with his own age and irrelevance while chasing after the Antikythera, a mysterious device with the power to find fissures in time, created by the ancient Greek mathematician and inventor Archimedes.
Initially, the screenwriting team thought about ending the movie by returning to the film’s extended prologue in 1944, when...

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments, including the final scene, in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” currently playing in theaters.
When Lucasfilm announced in 2016 that Steven Spielberg was making a fifth “Indiana Jones” movie with Harrison Ford, fans naturally wondered how much of a role Karen Allen’s Marion Ravenwood — Indy’s spitfire equal from 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and the love of his life — would play in the new film. The last time audiences saw Marion, she was getting married to Indy at the end of 2008’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” after she revealed to Indy that they’d had a child together, who Indy meets as teenage greaser Mutt Williams (Shia Labeouf). So any follow-up movie would at the very least need to address the fact that Indy is married with a (grown) kid.

The curtain has lowered on the Indiana Jones franchise, and Harrison Ford is taking his final bow as the adventurer that graced the silver screen for 42 years. Way back in 1981, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas wanted to make a nostalgic film to recapture their youth and Raiders of the Lost Ark was born. Harrison Ford was able to parlay his popularity as Han Solo into another rogue hero, albeit a more noble one. Harrison seemingly always preferred Indy to Han as he thought Solo’s arc had ended with either The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi. Here we are in 2023 and after playing an “older Indy” in a cameo for the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles back in the 90s, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008, Ford is back for one last adventure.

Indy’s back, in a new chapter that is a throw-back to that original Steven Spielberg Raiders Of The Lost Ark that hooked us to begin with. While Harrison Ford returns as archaeologist/adventurer Indiana Jones, along with a bunch of other Spielberg characters from the first one (along with some new ones), and this is the final film in the series and a farewell to Ford as the character, Spielberg does not direct Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny. Fear not, director James Mangold (Ferrari Vs Ford) seamlessly captures the Spielberg vibe. You’d never know if you didn’t look at the credits. Harrison Ford returns as Indiana Jones for his (presumably) final big screen adventure as the titular character in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. While this fifth installment in the series is an improvement over 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it fails to reach the heights that the first three films in the series – Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) – managed to achieve.
In this adventure, an aged Indiana Jones (Ford) finds himself in the 1960s where he must race against time itself to keep the legendary Dial of Destiny out of the hands of former Nazi Jürgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen) who plans to use the device to change the course of history.
Of course, Dr. Jones does not take on this task alone. This time around he is accompanied by...

Chicago – By all accounts the Indiana Jones series had nowhere to go but up after the woebegone “Crystal Skull.” But “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” manages to clear that admittedly low bar to add a sense of adventure back to the tales of the graying archeologist. That said there’s a certain pointlessness to the whole endeavor.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The film begins with an extended opening sequence involving a de-aged Harrison Ford as Indy scrambling to recover stolen artifacts from the Nazis at the tail end of World War II. That’s when we first encounter the mythical “Dial of Destiny,” a relic from the mathematician Archimedes which can predict fissures in time and space. This throwback young Indy sequence represents a high water mark for Hollywood’s fascination with the technology. At first glance it actually does look like the Indy of old. Occasionally you’ll get a...

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny isn’t only the final adventure of Nazi puncher/archeologist/teacher Indiana Jones. It’s also a referendum on his last, last adventure, 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Despite reuniting the original Indy creative team of director Steven Spielberg, writer/producer George Lucas, and star Harrison Ford, most consider Crystal Skull to be an embarrassing disaster. Haters have plenty of nits to pick at, too, including Indy’s refrigerator bomb escape, CGI monkeys, and space aliens. But more than a few would argue that worst part is Shia Labeouf as Mutt Williams, son of Indy and his former great love, Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen).
For a moment, it appeared that Spielberg and Lucas wanted Mutt to follow in his father’s footsteps. The movie even ended...

While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny marks Harrison Ford’s final performance as Dr. Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones Jr., the franchise may continue with another character leading future expeditions into the unknown. I’m talking about Indy’s goddaughter, Helena Shaw. Phoebe Waller-Bridge brings the character to life in the James Mangold-directed sequel. From what I’ve heard, Helena is a highlight of the new film, and the franchise’s future could rest in her capable hands. In a recent interview with Variety, producer Kathleen Kennedy says it’s “entirely possible” for Waller-Bridge to continue the brand.
Speaking with Variety about the new film, its mixed reception, and the franchise’s future, Mangold becomes visibly excited when the outlet broaches the topic of Helena Shaw. Mangold says he and the Butterworths (Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth) wrote the character specifically for Waller-Bridge, including elements of what made...

Before Indiana Jones entered director James Mangold’s life, Harrison Ford told him he was worried Indy was looking too old.
It was the fall of 2019, and Mangold had joined the team working on the film adaptation of “The Call of the Wild,” in which Ford plays a rugged frontiersman, to help with reshoots. In their downtime, Ford began confiding in Mangold about the fifth “Indiana Jones” movie, which had been bouncing around in development for the better part of three years. Steven Spielberg and screenwriter David Koepp had conceived a roughly five-minute opening sequence set during World War II, in which Ford would be digitally de-aged. Ford wasn’t sure it was a good idea.
“Harrison told me he was nervous, because he felt like if people saw him younger, when they confronted Indiana in his 70s they’d be disappointed,” Mangold says, sitting on a cream-colored couch inside...

Hulu is proceeding with the long-rumored second season of Nine Perfect Strangers. Nicole Kidman is returning to executive producer and star, with a new group of the titular strangers around her. Two-time Oscar nominee Liv Ullmann, Emmy winner Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus The Last Of Us), Dolly de Leon (Triangles Of Sadness), Maisie Richardson-Sellers (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) and Turkish actor Aras Aydin are set to star opposite Kidman, sources tell Deadline, with casting of the remaining roles ongoing.
Based on Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty’s book, Nine Perfect Strangers hails from David E. Kelley, Bruna Papandrea’s Made Up Stories, Kidman’s Blossom Films and Fifth Season.
Season 2 is said to be following the general formula of the first installment in a new location, the Swiss Alps. Nine stressed city dwellers try to get on a path to a better way of living with a...

“Nine Perfect Strangers” has officially been renewed for Season 2 at Hulu.
Variety reported in May 2022 that the show was nearing a deal to return, though no castings were confirmed at that time. It is now confirmed that Nicole Kidman will return in the role of resort director Masha as well as in her capacity as executive producer.
In addition, “White Lotus” and “The Last of Us” breakout Murray Bartlett is nearing a deal to star in Season 2, according to sources. The role would deepen Bartlett’s relationship with Hulu, as he recently starred in the streamer’s limited series “Welcome to Chippendales” opposite Kumail Nanjiani.
Also joining “Nine Perfect Strangers” for its second season are Liv Ullmann, Dolly De Leon, Maisie Richardson Sellers, and Aras Aydin.

Indiana Jones may be in his twilight years, but that doesn’t mean that he can’t solve a few more ancient puzzles. Disney has released a new clip for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny in which the famed hero uses the power of water displacement to find his way out of a pickle.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last month, but the early reception was mixed. Some had a lot of fun with the movie and had plenty of praise for Harrison Ford, but others felt it was bogged down in nostalgia. Either way, I can’t wait to watch the film for myself and go on one final adventure with my favourite hero.

Harrison Ford’s final performance as Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny could be looking at an underwhelming box office when the film opens exclusively in theaters on June 30. Analysts predict a $60 million to $70 million take for the fifth and final Indiana Jones film over a five-day holiday opening. While $60M would be a reason to celebrate for most movies, the Indiana Jones franchise carries a legacy that could warrant more of a return for Ford’s farewell performance as the intrepid archaeologist.
Dial of Destiny‘s 3-day opening is down from the $100.1M opening for 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, often hailed as the worst film in the franchise. Crystal Skull opened during Memorial Day weekend, securing $151.9M across five days. One could point to the mediocre reviews from Dial of Destiny‘s Cannes premiere as a reason for the...
