The Russo Bros’ The Gray Man was supposed to be a game-changer for Netflix. Fresh off directing two of the biggest films ever made (Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame), the Russo’s were confident they could bring the same kind of “can’t miss” event to a streamer. Indeed, The Gray Man sported a budget on par with the biggest Marvel movies and an all-star cast that included Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. The movie was indeed a hit for Netflix, with it currently sitting at number 5 on their all-time most popular movies list, but reaction to the film was more mixed than anticipated, and right now The Gray Man 2 seems like a questionable idea.

When it was released in 2022, The Russo Bros.' spy thriller "The Gray Man," based on the 2009 novel by Mark Greaney, boasted the largest budget of any Netflix film to date, costing the studio about $200 million. "The Gray Man" was a flippant action flick that starred Ryan Gosling as a skilled CIA assassin nicknamed Sierra Six, after the ultra-secret Sierra program that trained him. Sierra Six, on an early mission, learns from the now-independent Sierra Four (Callan Mulvey) that there may be some active corruption or malfeasance in the Sierra program, and goes rogue, searching for the truth. Six's boss Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton) hires the kooky, ultra-violent Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans) to track him down. Ana De Armas also appears as a CIA agent named Dani Miranda.

July saw many adapted stories head to screens both large and small, sourced from novels, comic books and more, and August is no different with a bevy of book adaptations on the horizon.
Last month gave us adaptations of Delia Owens’ wildly popular novel “Where the Crawdads Sing” , Mark Greaney’s spy thriller “The Gray Man” and in series form “Paper Girls” on Prime Video starring Ali Wong and Jason Mantzoukas.
August also has a slate of book adaptations landing in theaters and on streamers. Two of them came from graphic novels, and one might sound familiar to fans of George R. R. Martin and “Game of Thrones.” For kids, there is the final season of “Locke & Key” as well as “Lost Ollie” which comes from “Ollie’s Odyssey.”

No gray area here: With 88.55 million hours viewed over its first three days, “The Gray Man” starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans had the fifth-best launch week for a Netflix movie since the streamer began keeping (and releasing) records early last summer. The film’s ranking includes both English-language and non-English titles, though no foreign-language movies come close to Netflix’s Top 5 all-time.
The spy vs. spy movie blew away its closest competition, “The Sea Beast,” by nearly 55 million more hours viewed last week. The kids’ movie was in its third week and thus had seven days of viewership counted. Last week, its second one of availability and first full week on the platform, was the best one to-date for “The Sea Beast” with 68.11 million hours viewed.
“The Gray Man” enjoyed the most-watched opening weekend for a movie on Netflix since “The Adam Project” accumulated 92.43 million hours viewed in March.

While Ryan Gosling and Chris Evan’s leading characters in Netflix’s The Gray Man had their own CIA-rooted operations, the streaming giant was on a mission of its own: to launch a lucrative action franchise to rival the Mission: Impossibles and John Wicks of the world. Now, Netflix has set its plan in motion as the streaming platform announces plans for a Gray man sequel and separate spin-off film.
The Gray Man directors Anthony and Joe Russo will return to direct the sequel, which will also see the return of Gosling as Six.

“The Gray Man” is officially a franchise.
Just days after its premiere on the streaming platform, the Russo brothers-directed spy thriller has already locked in both a sequel and a spin-off. After “The Gray Man,” starring Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling, debuted at the number one slot on Netflix, the platform has greenlit two new projects tied to the success. “The Gray Man” saw star Evans play sociopathic assassin Lloyd Hansen, who is hired to hunt down CIA mercenary Courtland Gentry, aka Sierra Six (Gosling), after a security breach.
IndieWire can confirm that “Netflix is cementing plans for the IP to become a major spy franchise,” starting with a direct sequel starring Gosling with directors Joe and Anthony Russo set to helm the project. The Russos and Agbo’s Mike Larocca will produce along with Joe Roth and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum for Roth Kirschenbaum Films. “The Gray Man” co-writer Stephen McFeely is writing the sequel.

Even before Netflix releases opening-weekend audience numbers later today that will likely point to record audience engagement in 92 countries, the streamer has put in motion a sequel to The Gray Man, with Gosling returning to the title role and Joe & Anthony Russo again directing. They’ll produce with Agbo’s Mike Larocca and Roth Kirschenbaum Films’ Joe Roth and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum. Stephen McFeeley, who co-wrote the original from the Mark Greaney novel with his Avengers scripting partner Christopher Markus, is writing this one solo.

Ryan Gosling stars and Chris Evans slouches throughout “The Gray Man,” an expensive (and expensive-looking) Netflix-produced action caper that sets the two marquee-topping actors against each other for instantly forgettable reasons.
Co-directed by “Avengers: Endgame” helmers Anthony and Joe Russo (who adapted a script from Mark Greaney’s novel with Stephen McFeely) “The Gray Man” pits Gosling’s quippy but otherwise stoic CIA hitman against Evans’s frantic (and therefore only ostensibly menacing) government contractor.
Both performers coast on their by-now well-established personas and respective assets – the Russos seem especially invested in highlighting Evans’s biceps and hips – but Gosling projects enough confidence and charm to make you want to keep watching.

A hyper-caffeinated blend of the the Jason Bourne and John Wick films told through the colorful, bloodless filter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), The Gray Man feels too big to be relegated to Netflix. It’s a globe-trotting actioner with multiple effects-heavy set pieces that feel designed for the biggest screen possible, and a cast that must have set the streamer back a pretty penny.
But a passing glance at the clichéd script, coupled with a pace designed to keep people from clicking to the next option, reveals this as another algorithm-influenced streaming distraction. While The Gray Man’s cast makes the film an improvement on Netflix time-wasters like Red Notice or 6 Underground, it can’t help but feel disposable, the type of noisy, empty bit of pabulum that previously would have been relegated quickly to repeat showings on TNT.

Netflix is in major need of a movie franchise hit, and it’s obvious why they would look to directors Anthony and Joe Russo (“Avengers: Endgame”) to find it with “The Gray Man,” which opened for a one-week theatrical run this weekend before hitting the streamer Friday. But a franchise hit may not be all that Netflix needs to boost its fortunes, and with a budget north of 200 million, a lot needs to go right for “The Gray Man” to show that Netflix’s strategy as a film studio is on the right track. The Russo brothers always envisioned Mark Greaney’s 11 “Gray Man” books as a long-term action franchise well before the project landed at Netflix. But analysts and experts who spoke to TheWrap questioned whether big-budget tentpole sequels actually drive significant subscriber growth, and whether the enormous production cost makes financial sense without a broad theatrical strategy in tandem with streaming.

Filmmaking duo the Russo Brothers have expanded their action expertise beyond the MCU in ”The Gray Man”, an adaptation of the Mark Greaney novel of the same name.
For the film, the Russo Brothers have recruited longtime collaborator Chris Evans, seen in their work on “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014), “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), “Avengers: Infinity War”(2018), and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019). However, this time around Evans plays the villain not the hero, with Ryan Gosling filling the role of the film’s protagonist. This is one of Netflix’s most expensive movies ever made, and thus is getting a bit of a different release strategy than some other Netflix movies.

Plucked from a federal penitentiary and recruited by his handler, Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton), Gentry was once a highly-skilled, Agency-sanctioned merchant of death. But now the tables have turned and Six is the target, hunted across the globe by Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a psychopathic former cohort at the CIA, who will stop at nothing to take him out. Fortunately, Agent Dani Miranda (Ana De Armas) has his back.

Wednesday night was the premiere of “The Gray Man,” the Russo Brothers’ ambitious action thriller that, with a budget of 200 million, is the most expensive movie Netflix has ever made. On Thursday, the review embargo for the film lifted, bringing with it a generally underwhelmed response from critics.
The film stars Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans as Court Gentry and Lloyd Hansen. Gentry is on the run from Hansen after coming into possession of top-secret CIA information, and Hansen is unforgiving in his efforts to chase Gentry down. Ana de Armas also stars as Dani Miranda, alongside Regé-Jean Page, Jessica Henwick, Julia Butters, Dhanush, Alfre Woodard and Billy Bob Thornton.
Overall, most critics agree that “The Gray Man” is an over-the-top attempt by Netflix to capture the magic of blockbuster thrillers like the 007 movies. Gosling, Evans, de Armas and their co-stars show their talents, but the majority of reviews...

Looking for a character more mysterious than a skilled master spy? Try Court Gentry (Ryan Gosling), the ultimate “spy’s spy” in this high-tension actioner based on Mark Greaney’s book series. “All spies need to be untraceable,” says Anthony Russo, half of the Russo Brothers directing team alongside sibling Joe for The Gray Man. “Gentry needs to be that to the 10th degree.” No wonder: Furloughed from prison in exchange for performing mercenary CIA missions, Gentry unearths dark agency secrets that suddenly put him in the crosshairs of a wildly unhinged former colleague. In order to stay alive, says Russo, “Gentry can’t hide in the gray any longer,” and the chase moves from Prague to Bangkok to Paris in what is touted as Netflix’s most expensive film to date. Also in the dark no longer: a sinister counter to Evans’ Captain America role, whom the Russos directed...

If the movies have taught us anything, it’s that there’s always a booming market for assassins — and should you be a government-sanctioned executioner, you’ll eventually use your deadly skill set against the very folks who’ve trained you. (That, and don’t feed creatures purchased from a Chinatown antique store after midnight. All very important life lessons.) By now, the moving pictures are littered with legions of hit men and hit women who’ve spent years dealing out death for a living, only to discover that they...

The directors behind two of the biggest movies ever made – “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” – have high praise for the latest season of “Stranger Things.” Directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo admitted they’re “huge” fans of the Netflix series while talking to TheWrap at the premiere of their new film “The Gray Man,” adding how impressed they were with the season’s scale.
“Season 4 was out of this world,” Joe Russo told TheWrap (which you can watch in the video above). “It was as big as anything I’ve ever seen.”
Indeed, “Stranger Things” Season 4 was the biggest season of the hit series by far, spanning the globe in terms of locations and stretching the limits of runtime – to the point that every episode ran over an hour long, and the season finale was a feature-length two-and-a-half-hours long.

"The Gray Man" has gone through some wildly different permutations on its way to the big screen. Early on, the film adaptation of Mark Greaney's 2009 debut novel of the same name was set to be a Brad Pitt vehicle directed by James Gray, years before the duo teamed up for 2019's "Ad Astra" (tragically depriving us of countless dad jokes about "The Gray Man" and its "Gray" director in the process). Later, when the Russo Brothers came aboard to write its script, Charlize Theron was attached to star in a gender-swapped version of the movie, prior to the latter...

The title of Mark Greaney’s novel The Gray Man (first in a best-selling series) refers to a quality that is as desirable for a spy as it is difficult to find in contemporary movies about their exploits: the ability to move through the world without being noticed, so unremarkable that those you interact with forget you as soon as you’re out of the room.
That ethic barely makes it into Joe and Anthony Russo’s stylish, supersized Netflix adaptation, whose hero (Ryan Gosling) wears attention-grabbing clothes and attracts the kind of mayhem that shuts entire cities down (not to mention being so handsome that the spooks in a John le Carré operation would never let him out in the field.) A side character expounds on the value of blending in, but even he wears one-in-a-million facial hair and lives in a building designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser,...

Good news for people who’ve always wanted to see the fake movies that Chris Evans’ “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” character — blowhard action star Lucas Lee — made before exploding into a pile of coins at the bottom of a Toronto staircase: Netflix just spent at least 200 million to shoot one for real. Despite being adapted from Mark Greaney’s 2009 spy novel of the same name, “The Gray Man” feels like it was even more directly extrapolated from the poster for Lee’s blockbuster smash “You Just Don’t Exist,” which features a photo of Evans grimacing into a telephone above a tagline that reads: “Cole Hazard just got a call saying he has 89 minutes to live… from himself.”
In fairness to Anthony and Joe Russo, whose post-“Avengers” output also includes directing one of 2021’s worst films (“Cherry”) and producing one of 2022’s best (“Everything Everywhere All at Once...

In the first clip for the Russo Brothers’ “The Gray Man,” Ryan Gosling dismantles a room full of bad guys, insults Chris Evans’ “trash stache” and even thinks about stealing Evans’ shoes off his feet.
It’s a clip in which Gosling and Evans are meeting face to face for the first time, and Evans seemingly has Gosling in a barrel on two occasions as he looks for a mysterious hard drive that Gosling possesses. But it doesn’t stop Gosling from looking very nonplussed by the encounter and wondering why his attacker with a bad mustache and white pants is named “Lloyd.”
Netflix premiered the first look at the clip during their ongoing Geeked Week, and it’s a taste of a very expensive spy and espionage thriller from the directors of “Avengers: Endgame” that the streamer is hoping is a summer smash. The Russo Brothers were also on...

Top Gun: Maverick will put Kenny Loggin’s “Danger Zone” back in the spotlight (where it belongs). Here’s how the artist conquered the movie soundtrack world in the 1980s.
“Most musicians would be content to shape the sound of pop in one decade—like how Elvis Presley shook up the ’50s or The Beatles owned the ’60s. But not Kenny Loggins. After helping to invent the supremely chill, lightly funky sound known as ‘yacht rock’ in the ’70s, Loggins went full speed into the ’80s and took the highway to the danger zone of movie soundtracks. The gambit paid off in a big way.”

Another Hollywood legend is joining the Fast and Furious family, and this time it’s West Side Story icon Rita Moreno.
“In an inspired bit of stunt casting, iconic Egot winner Rita Moreno will join the Fast and the Furious franchise family.

Netflix has released the first trailer for “The Gray Man,” the 200 million plus spy and espionage thriller that stars Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. But they definitely don’t get along in this one.
Gosling is part of the Sierra program, a team of “reckless mystery men you guys send in when you can’t officially send anyone else.” He’s known as The Gray Man, and according to Chris Evans’ Lloyd Hansen, “he’s got some street cred.” But he’s apparently outlived his usefulness, and has become an important target.
Hansen is determined to hunt him down, and enlist anyone he needs to to get it done. Of course, the men have some pretty good banter along the way.
“Avengers: Endgame” filmmakers Joe Russo and Anthony Russo direct this epic spy thriller for Netflix, fresh off their drama-skewing “Cherry” for Apple TV+.

Ryan Gosling has been absent from cinemas since he starred in 2018’s “First Man,” but that’s about to change in a big way.
