There’s been intense speculation about just what’s behind the dearth of hip-hop at the top of the charts this year. It took until August for a rap album (Travis Scott’s Utopia) to top the Billboard 200. Industry experts, troubled by the shift, have been pondering: Is this a sign of a commercial decline, or...

Noname has finally released her second studio album, Sundial. Stream the record below.
Sundial is the proper follow-up to Noname’s 2018 debut LP, Room 25, which Consequence named as one of the top albums of the 2010s. Originally, the 31-year-old rapper was going to release a record entitled Factory Baby in 2019, but she scrapped that album, writing on social media at the time that she may quit music altogether.
Thankfully, she didn’t follow through on that threat, and we get to finally dive into the world of Sundial. Spanning 10 tracks and running just over 30 minutes, the new record is lined with powerful themes and lush with features, including appearances from billy woods, Common, Jay Electronica, Eryn Allen Kane, Jimetta Rose, The Voices of Creation, Ayoni, $ilkMoney, and Stout.
Noname first announced the album last month, and planned on releasing “balloons” as a single, but changed her mind, writing that she...

The wait is over. After delays, three listening parties, and an eyebrow-raising performance art wedding, Kanye West has finally released his newest album, Donda.
Named after his late mother, the album is West’s 10th studio album and follows his evangelical Jesus Is King, released in 2019.
Update: But later on Sunday, West took to social media, claiming his Universal Music record label released the album without his approval. “Universal put my album out without my approval and they blocked Jail 2 from being on the album,” he wrote.
The label has not yet responded.
There are 27 tracks listed on the Spotify playlist for the album. The song “Jail pt. 2,” which reportedly features DaBaby, is listed but not yet available. Donda was originally scheduled for release on July 22, and was supposed to be unveiled at two huge listening party held at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. But West, ever the perfectionist, decided to hold off on the release,...

It’s a beautiful day in Grammy land — if you’re Beyoncé, Dua Lipa, Roddy Ricch, Phoebe Bridgers, or any of the other artists who deservedly cleaned up when nominations for the 2021 awards were announced. For many others across the world of music, it’s time to call their managers, take a hard look in the mirror, and/or cry out to the heavens in despair and ask how the Recording Academy could have ignored their work. With the increased domination of hip-hop music on the charts every year, the rap field is an especially interesting one to watch out for at the Grammys. Previous rap albums that have won went on to become classics, like Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp A Butterfly” and Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter III.” Let’s take a look at this year’s top contenders.

As a pandemic besieges the globe, hip-hop fans are the only group asking the important questions: Did Jay-Z wash Jay Electronica on the latter’s debut album?

Until it arrived on Thursday night in the midst of a pandemic, almost no one could assert one way or another whether Jay Electronica‘s album was actually going to appear. He — and his label, Jay Z’s Roc Nation — had stoked the fires, and rumors abounded, including that this would be a joint project with Jay Z. But next to no confirmable details emerged until Electronica himself shared a tracklist. Even then, it was hard to be sure that the album was real, and for good reason: Everyone’s been waiting for a while.

After appearing in a Rudy Mancuso sketch last week, pop megastar Justin Bieber is once again collaborating with digital creators in the Shots Studios family. Writer/performer Poo Bear and Bieber -- who is an investor in the photo app-turned-digital studio -- have tapped Shots creator Hannah Stocking to star in the lyric video for their new single, "Hard 2 Face Reality," which also features the rapper Jay Electronica.
"Hard 2 Face Reality" hails from Poo Bear’s forthcoming debut album, Bearthday Music. Welcome to Outrage Watch, HitFix's semi-regular rundown of entertainment-related kerfuffles. Not anxious enough already? Get your fix of righteous indignation below, and stay posted for outrage updates throughout the week. Billboard writers Steven J. Drake won big at the 2014 Bet Hip Hop Awards, picking up four awards, and Common made a statement, bringing Michael Brown’s parents onstage during his performance.
Drake was easily the biggest winner of the night, earning a total of four awards, including ones for Album of the Year, Best Hip Hop Video and Best Live Performer. But it was the performances from Common and Queen Latifah that stole the show.
Common Brings Michael Brown's Parents Onstage
Common performed “Kingdom” at the Hip Hop Awards, a song for which he also won Best Impact Track, and dedicated his song to those marginalized in the country, specifically African Americans. To bring his point home, Common welcomed the parents of Michael Brown, Michael Brown Sr. and Lesley McSpadden, to the stage. Michael Brown was shot and killed by police in Ferguson, Missouri, and his death has caused a major string of protests across the country.

I would love to collect at some point, but I think the whole rap/art world thing is getting kind of corny." So over the weekend, the long lost Jay Electronica and his benefactor Jay Z dropped a remix of Drake's own "We Made It," and it includes the following, insta-classic Jay response: "Sorry Mr. Drizzy for so much art talk / Silly me rappin' bout shit that I really bought." Mr. Drizzy! Also, there's a Lupita Nyong’o shout-out. Look, Jay tried.

Boom! And just like that, Kendrick Lamar got everyone's attention. On Monday, Big Sean's track "Control"—a previously unreleased song featuring Lamar—finally dropped, and it includes Lamar's colossal takedown of a who's who of hip-hop artists as he spews forth a hail of lacerating barbs while taunting them to up their game. The track had originally been recorded for Big Sean's Hall of Fame album and also features Jay Electronica. But it's Lamar's extended verse—which trashes Drake, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky and even Big Sean himself—that has everyone talking. "I'm usually homeboys with the same n---as I'm rhymin with / But this is hip-hop...

Monday night, Aug. 12, Big Sean debuted the Kendrick Lamar, Jay Electronica-assisted "Control" with Hot 97's Funk Flex. The No I.D.-produced cut didn't make it onto his upcoming Hall of Fame album due to sampling clearance. But it wasn't the release that took the net by surprise, it was Kendrick's featured verse. Nashville, Tenn. — Mac Miller had a quick decision to make when Kanye West jumped the street date for his new album: Move his "Watching Movies with the Sound Off" to a different week or stand firm in the face of "Yeezus."
In the end, it was a simple decision. The album was too good to wait.
"I initially just wanted my own space for my album to drop and then Kanye's date came out and it was kind of like, `Ok, that's probably the worst person to go up against to drop an album,'" Miller said. "But I'm one of those weird everything-happens-for-a-reason type people, so I felt that maybe there's a reason I was dropping the same day as Kanye, and I think there was. I think it let people know that I have a long career ahead of me and I wasn't just anything that people put me as before.

Like Drake before him and Kendrick Lamar sort-of after him, J. Cole's one of those rappers who doesn't pretend he's free of emotions. He's the dude who makes a song with TLC about feeling insecure about his looks ("Crooked Smile") and has an affable nice-guy air that's punctuated by moments of impressive aggression ("Looking for Trouble").
But niceties aside, Cole's feeling pretty good about himself.
"I feel like I've done a lot for hip-hop, in terms of where it is right now and where it's going," he says backstage before his show at New York's iHeartRadio Theater. "I still have a lot to do, I'm not satisfied, but everyone helps the next."
That sort of confidence, the type that emboldens a rapper prepping the release of his second studio album to place himself on a Kanye-Jay-Nas-Pac-Biggie level, and say he changed the recording industry's "business model" as Cole has in other interviews,...

Underground rapper Jay Electronica signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label, it was announced at an event in New York Friday night. Shortly after, Diddy tweeted “Damn it hurts in a whole other way when someone you felt and I mean really felt was your Friend, Betrays you. It hurts when Breathe” — which many, including Electronica, interpreted as a reaction to the signing. But Diddy later tweeted that he’s happy for the rapper and wasn’t referring to him or Jay-Z in the tweet.
