The rules of the hating game are not set, they are constantly in flux, changing to suit rapidly conditions. The one constant: its players, Lucy (Lucy Hale) and Josh (Austin Stowell), dueling assistants at a publishing house who not only seem incapable of seeing eye to eye, but of very often getting damn close to actually punching out said eyes. There is indeed a thin line between love and hate, and as Peter Hutchings’ crackling “The Hating Game” opens, Lucy and Josh are inches from demolishing that line forever. Fans of best-selling author Sally Thorne, who burst onto the romance scene with the 2016 novel on which Hutchings’ film is based, will certainly know what to expect from the feature version, but

Peace, Love, and Misunderstanding Directed by: Bruce Beresford Written by: Joseph Muszynski and Christina Mengert Starring: Jane Fonda, Catherine Keener, Elizabeth Olsen, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chace Crawford, Nat Wolff and Marissa O'Donnell Peace, Love, and Misunderstanding is a fairly rote piece of fluff, but exemplary performances by the talented cast make the film worth a watch. Catherine Keener stars as Diane, an icy and uptight lawyer who has just found out her husband wants a divorce. This event serves as the impetus for her to visit her estranged mother Grace (Jane Fonda) who lives in the town of Woodstock. For reasons never fully explained, the two have not spoken for over 20 years. That means that grandma has never had the opportunity to meet her grandchildren Zoe (Elizabeth Olsen) and Jake (Nat Wolff). Despite that minor detail, Grace doesn’t seem that rattled when Diane and the kids show up on her doorstep,...

Chicago – Jane Fonda portraying an aging hippie seems like a slam dunk. She was a 1960s hippie at one time, right? Well, it’s obvious she wasn’t the type of hippie personified in “Peace, Love & Misunderstanding,” co-starring Catherine Keener and Elizabeth Olsen. Nobody was that type of of hippie.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Taking the route of clichés over character or substance, “Peace, Love & Misunderstanding” is a fable of a survivor from the 1960s era that could be argued as taking place in a parallel universe, or is written (by Joseph Muszynski and Christina Mengert) through people who didn’t experience what that era meant, but this is what they hoped a hippie character would be like. Set in Woodstock, New York (naturally), the narrative plods through a series of groovy references, strung together like mismatched love beads, but signifying stereotypical laziness and producing boredom.
