It’s been a decade since frustration inspired Joseph Gordon-Levitt to create online arts collaborative HitRecord. After the former child actor (“3rd Rock From the Sun”) went to college, he returned to Hollywood and couldn’t land a role.
“I wanted to be creative, and no one was letting me,” said Gordon-Levitt in an interview with IndieWire. “Ok, I have to figure out something to do on my own.“
Gordon-Levitt and his brother Daniel (who died in 2010) started creating art online. “And this community started forming around what we were doing,” he said. “And then it became all about this feedback loop between me and the community.”
That became a full-blown production company, with Gordon-Levitt and his HitRecord colleagues serving as leaders for artistic projects that became online collaborations. The results included short films that played Sundance, an Emmy-winning TV show, commercials produced for big brands, a tour, books, music,...

Way back in 2005, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and his brother created HitRecord.org, a collaborative website where artists could work together to create new works of art. Nine years later, the group has grown exponentially, to the point that they have developed a variety show, hitRECord on TV, to highlight the collaborations and tell unique stories.
HitRecord on TV is one of the more interesting TV ventures I’ve seen in a while. It’s kind of a Generation Y variety show, with it’s kinetic energy, wild inventiveness and the sense of community each piece has created. I screened the first three episodes and there’s a lot to like with this show. Each show has a given theme (Number One, Fantasy, and Trash, respectively) and the show works as like a patchwork of ideas. There’s a musical number per episode, some sort of short film,...

Exclusive: Just after previewing the first three episodes of his TV series Hitrecord On TV, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and his Hitrecord exec producer Jared Geller have set a first-look deal with Participant Media and its youth-centric TV station Pivot. This comes after the show Gordon-Levitt created got an 8-episode order for a second season. The series debuted yesterday on the upstart Pivot cable channel, for which Gordon-Levitt also is a creative adviser. Said Pivot President Evan Shapiro: “Joe is the kind of artist we envisioned when we created Pivot. He is a director, actor, writer and disruptor who understands how to use every form of media to engage our audience.” It’s only the second time that a TV series was featured on the Sundance program, but this series is directly intertwined with the festival. I watched the first episode and noticed a stylistic symmetry to other anthology shows, most particularly Sesame Street,...

In the first episode of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's new Pivot series "HitRECord on TV," the actor and sometimes director is nearly jumping off the screen in excitement. That, he explains, is because he really is that thrilled about this project.
"It certainly is a great deal of wish fulfillment for me, this show. It's a long time coming," Gordon-Levitt tells Zap2it and a group of reporters at TCA 2014 winter press tour. "If you notice that I'm excited, it's because I am."
HitRECord, an online collaborative production company, was originally started by Gordon-Levitt in 2005 with his brother Dan Gordon-Levitt as a way for them to post videos. They later relaunched the site in January 2010 at Sundance Film Festival as a medium for others to take part in this community of collaborators whose joint mission was to work together to create new art. Jgl makes it clear in HitRECord's mission statement...
