With the proper alignment of talent, the cliché of a brawny thug with a heart of gold becomes an irreverent and heartwarming combination in films like Norwegian deadpan comedy "A Somewhat Gentle Man" and Darren Aronofsky's "The Wrestler." While "The Chaperone" bests those works by starring a real wrestler, it falls short on every other count. Flatly directed by Stephen Herek from a screenplay by S.J. Roth, the movie seems ...

There has been some news regarding the upcoming WWE films project The Chaperone. Recently, Kevin Corrigan (American Gangster), Annabeth Gish (The West Wing), and Ariel Winter (Modern Family) have signed on to star alongside wrestler Jean Paul Leveque (better known as wrestler Hhh) in the film. Also, Stephen Herek, best known for Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and The Mighty Ducks, has agreed to direct the film from a screenplay by playwright S.J. Roth. The film began principal photography in New Orleans yesterday.
The press release describes the plot of the film in this manner:
Ray Bradstone (Paul “Triple H” Levesque) is the best “wheel man in the business,” but he is determined to go straight and be the best parent he can be to his daughter, Sally (Ariel Winter), and make amends with his ex-wife, Lynne (Annabeth Gish). WWE Studios have announced the leading role debut of one of the biggest names in the WWE, Triple H. The wrestler, real name Paul Levesque, will join Kevin Corrigan, Ariel Winter and Annabeth Gish (one of my all-time favourite actresses), in the upcoming comedy, The Chaperone.
Triple H will play ex-con Ray Bradstone, a former getaway driver determined to turn his life around and establish a relationship with his estranged daughter Sally, in the film directed by Stephen Herek (Critters, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, The Mighty Ducks).
I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m pretty interested to see The Chaperone. For one, Triple H can do comedy and action – we’ve seen that in the WWE; two it also stars Annabeth Gish; and three, it’s directed by Stephen Herek – who has made some damn fine comedies over the years.
