Netflix is one of the top streaming services for a reason. What attracts so many millions of users around the world is the freedom to choose content — Netflix's library may not be endless, but there is never a shortage of viewing options.
In particular, the platform actively offers all kinds of movies and series in the thriller genre, as users enjoy following nail-biting events full of thrills and suspense while waiting for mind-blowing revelations. Some of the most popular projects are the live-action adaptations of thriller king Harlan Coben, including the release earlier this year of Fool Me Once, starring Michelle Keegan and Richard Armitage.
But as the number of thrillers on Netflix has grown over the past few years, it's become increasingly difficult to find a series that doesn't follow typical tropes and clichés and offers something truly original.

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 28 to cast their 2021 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs. Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Four years ago that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.
While the comedy and drama series ballots have each maintained an average of over 100 entrants in recent years, there have nearly always been fewer than 40 choices in the limited series genre. There are 37 shows on the list this year, which is down by four from last year. There were 35 in 2019, 33 in 2018, and 25 in 2017. Five series from the list below will make the cut and be announced as Emmy nominees on July 13.

Television dominated the roster of nominees for the 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards, which returns this May after a year-long hiatus due, at least in part, to the Covid-19 pandemic. But with the kind of crowd-pleasing, popcorn-ready films that the MTV awards show normally celebrates mostly delayed due to the pandemic, TV has taken a front seat this year.

If you haven't already watched Behind Her Eyes, Netflix's adaptation of Sarah Pinborough's 2018 novel, then I recommend you turn back now, because I'm about to spoil the hell out of the big "twist" at the end of the series. If there's one compliment we could give the show, it's that it's a faithful remake of the book, aside from some minute details that don't alter the story too much. The show keeps the book's most vital plot points, which unfortunately includes the story's twisted finale. It's an ending that manages to turn the entire story on its head and does justice for none of the characters - especially not the woman at the center of it all.
To be fair, the series hints at the big twist throughout each episode. Louise (played by Simona Brown), a single mother looking to mingle, bumps into the handsome David (Tom Bateman...

Photo: 'Behind Her Eyes'/Netflix Netflix seems to have found their new go-to formula; limited series based on best-selling books. Some of these have been better than others, from the stellar ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ and ‘The Mess You Leave Behind’ to the less impressive ‘Firefly Lane’. The streaming giant’s latest endeavor into this formula is the psychological thriller ‘Behind Her Eyes’, based on the novel by Sarah Pinborough. This six-episode series follows a single mother, Louise (Simona Brown) as she balances entering an affair with her boss David (Tom Bateman) and striking up a close friendship with his wife Adele (Eve Hewson). However, not all is as it appears, and Louise finds herself pulled into a tangled mystery that is darker than she ever could have imagined. The premise is solid, if not the most original, but the series as a whole misses the mark so widely you wonder...

Behind Her Eyes is the perfect duplicity-hinting title for a series that conceals what it is until the very end. The name works both for the psychological adultery thriller that this Netflix adaptation presents as, and for the supernatural story it’s really telling.

Save for one majorly ill-conceived change, the suspenseful miniseries is perhaps one of the most faithful adaptations Netflix has made as of late. Sarah Pinborough's 2018 novel takes readers inside a complex love triangle between a married couple and a woman who finds herself drawn to each partner in different ways. Netflix's version tells the story of Louise (Simona Brown), Adele (Eve Hewson), and David (Tom Bateman) in a similar fashion to the book, but with slight tweaks - here are the major differences.
(Note that the following might require more context if you haven't read the book, watched the series, or both!)
1. Louise Isn't Explicitly Black in the Book

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched (or at least plan to watch) all six episodes of “Behind Her Eyes,” now streaming on Netflix.
Pressing play on the first episode of “Behind Her Eyes,” all I knew was that there was going to be a capital-t Twist that may or may not cause me to lose what’s left of my mind. In fact, the ending of the Sarah Pinborough novel that the Netflix series is based on was originally marketed to readers with ominous subway ads warning people “Don’T Trust This Book” and the performatively astonished hashtag, “#WTFThatEnding.” Short of Googling it, though, I could never have guessed just how ridiculous That Ending was until I got to see it with my own two bewildered eyes.

Behind Her Eyes is an intense watch as it explores heavy themes like obsession, drug abuse, mental illness, and lucid dreaming. It follows the story of married couple David (Tom Bateman) and Adele (Eve Hewson), who end up intertwined in a relationship with David's coworker Louise (played by Simona Brown). At first, it appears to be your very average TV storyline about a man in an unhappy marriage who cheats on his wife and can't seem to stop himself. Very quickly, though, you realize that there's more to David and Adele's marriage than meets the eye, and you begin to worry about Louise and her involvement. As it turns out, that's for good reason.
While Louise and Adele develop an oddly comfortable friendship relatively early on in the six-part series, you do start to wonder if somehow Adele might know that Louise is the one sleeping with her husband when she's not around.

Netflix psychological thriller Behind Her Eyes, adapted from Sarah Pinborough’s hit novel of the same name, sets its cast an unenviably tough task (and not just because almost everyone’s having to do a regional accent). Through subtleties and shifts in their performances, Eve Hewson, Tom Bateman, Simona Brown and Robert Aramayo need to keep the audience invested while keeping us guessing. What is it we’re watching? Is this six-part series the tale of Adele and David’s brittle marriage and the secrets that bind them? Or the story of single-mother Louise (Simona Brown) getting in over her head with this glamorous new couple? Could it be something else entirely?
While you’re asking yourself those questions, you’ll likely be asking another: where have I seen that guy before? While we can’t help with the former and stay spoiler-free, we can answer that one…
Eve Hewson...

Behind Her Eyes, a bestselling thriller written by Sarah Pinborough, was marketed with its own hashtag, #WTFThatEnding, that can be interpreted two ways: as a lure convincing potential readers that they’ll be delighted by an unexpected conclusion, or as a warning that they’ll want to hurl the book across the room upon finishing. I have not read Pinborough’s novel, and only learned of the hashtag after watching all six episodes of the new Netflix limited series version of Behind Her Eyes. And I’m sorry to report...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Common Ground,” the fourth episode of “Outlander” Season 4.
When “Outlander” last left Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Hueghan), they decided to take Governor Tryon (Tim Downie) up on his offer to settle 10,000 acres of land in America in exchange for Jamie swearing an oath to the British crown. When Jamie signed the papers to make it official, the governor informed Jamie that he would need to be careful of which men he chooses as his tenants because Regulators (aka people rebelling against the Crown) were everywhere. Jamie talked a good game of seeming sympathetic to the Crown, but you could tell he didn’t care much for the British.

Sometimes, the mark of a good spy story is what gets said without any words at all. Such is the case for the new AMC limited series “The Little Drummer Girl.”
From director Park Chan-wook and based on a novel from legendary genre master John le Carré, the six-part series follows a 1970s London actress named Charlie (Florence Pugh) who gets dragged into an international espionage project by a handsome, shadowy figure named “Peter” (Alexander Skarsgård).
In an exclusive clip below, you can catch a glimpse of the danger that both Charlie and Peter face as they carry out their specific mission. It’s the kind of meticulous, ratcheted-up tension, done in a way only Park Chan-wook can. It may not have the technicolor wardrobe that blankets so many of the scenes in the series, but it still has that unmistakable atmosphere that only the ’70s can offer up. Toss...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Kiss Me First,” including the finale, “You Can Never Go Home.”]
“Kiss Me First” has perhaps one of the most head-scratching finales on TV, and not just because it leaves almost every storyline open for a possible Season 2. The episode highlights one of the show’s biggest weaknesses: the Vr world created for the series is all but wasted or used in bizarre ways because the storytelling simply can’t figure out what to do with it. Or it ran out of the budget to do anything cooler with it. Either way, it follows IndieWire’s initial review that frames the Vr world as anything but fun.
The first major Vr confrontation in the finale makes an effort to explore the possibilities of what the mysterious antagonist Adrian (voiced by Matthew Beard) can do with Azana, the virtual world that he apparently made for his mother, who took credit for...

“Kiss Me First,” like its teenage protagonist, is confused and immature. The Netflix series has the raw materials for what could be a promising tale, but its storytelling has not yet found its voice. Instead, it appears to be mimicking a number of different genres — cyber-thriller, mystery, coming-of-age, and romance — yet doesn’t know how to blend or develop them.
The brief six-part British series is very loosely inspired by the novel by Lottie Moggach, and how it botches the adaptation will be addressed later. Teenager Leila (Tallulah Haddon) retreats into the virtual world of Azana and needs it more than ever now that her sick mum has died. She encounters a mysterious group of misfits, including a young woman named Tess (Simona Brown), whom she befriends in the real world.
