The 49th Chaplin Gala took place on Monday, April 19 at Alice Tully Hall, honoring award recipient Jeff Bridges. From presenters Sharon Stone, Chris Pine, Cynthia Erivo, and Rosie Perez, to special guests including Sarah Paulson and Kieran Culkin, the carpet was buzzing for Film at Lincoln Center’s annual gala.
We caught up with Marielle Heller on the carpet, whose long-awaited “Nightbitch,” based on Rachel Yoder’s fall 2021 debut novel of the same name, will finally release December 6, 2024. “The truth is, it got delayed because of the strike, which is fine, we needed to strike,” Heller told IndieWire.
“It was an important thing, but it’s hard to wait. It’s hard to be done with a movie and not have it come out,” Heller continued. “I don’t think I’m supposed to say something like this, but it’s kind of like having creative blue balls. We want...

February––particularly its third week––is all about romance. Accordingly the Criterion Channel got creative with their monthly programming and, in a few weeks, will debut Interdimensional Romance, a series of films wherein “passion conquers time and space, age and memory, and even death and the afterlife.” For every title you might’ve guessed there’s a wilder companion: Alan Rudolph’s Made In Heaven, Soderbergh’s remake, and Resnais’ Love Unto Death. Mostly I’m excited to revisit Francis Ford Coppola’s Youth Without Youth, a likely essential viewing before Megalopolis.
February also marks Black History Month, and Criterion’s series will include work by Shirley Clarke (also subject of a standalone series), Garrett Bradley, Cheryl Dunye, and Julie Dash, while movies by Sirk, Minnelli, King Vidor, and Lang play in “Gothic Noir.” Greta Gerwig gets an “Adventures in Moviegoing” and can be seen in Mary Bronstein’s Yeast,...

It takes a certain kind of cajones to refuse a request from the Starman. However, when you’re a performer on Saturday Night Live, you have to be somewhat of a caretaker with your characters, as they can make or break you. It’s not a rare practice that when celebrities host or make a special guest appearance on the famous sketch show, they either play themselves or encounter a cast member whose very talent is to do an impression of that celebrity. And when the celebrity guest is a good sport, it can be fair game and lead to something great.
Former Saturday Night Live cast members Dana Carvey and David Spade host a podcast titled Fly on the Wall, which specializes in interviewing comedic actors who have associated with the NBC show. Many episodes feature exclusive behind-the-scenes stories from the mouths of the people themselves. According to The Hollywood Reporter,...

Just when we as viewers were thinking that it would be tough for My Adventures With Superman to top the brilliant sixth episode, which portrayed marginalized characters like Monsieur Mallah and Brain in a sympathetic light, the seventh episode pushed the limits by introducing the multiverse in a brilliant manner. In the sixth episode, Clark came clean to Jimmy and Lois about his secret identity as Superman, and the bond between the three friends grew stronger than ever. As the trio bids farewell to Mallah and Brain, Clark learns about the possibility of his connection with the covert operations spearheaded by the mysterious general. In Episode 7, Kiss Kiss Fall In Portal, the story takes a detour from the central narrative, and we explore the larger DC multiverse with the help of one of Superman’s classic enemies.

This story about Jeff Bridges and “The Old Man” first ran in the Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Over seven decades, Jeff Bridges has demonstrated an uncanny ability to disappear into characters while still seeming like himself — whether it’s a fawn-eyed extraterrestrial (“Starman”), a chill Zen master (“The Big Lebowski”) or an alcoholic country singer (“Crazy Heart),” a performance for which he won an Oscar. Now Bridges mesmerizes as Dan Chase, a rogue CIA operative pulled back into the game to protect his daughter in FX’s slow-burn espionage thriller “The Old Man,” which has weathered a rough road to completion.
Production shut down during the pandemic and again when Bridges was diagnosed with lymphoma in the fall of 2020. He underwent chemotherapy, then spent several months in the hospital after contracting Covid-19. He is now in remission and healthy, and “The Old Man” has become FX...

David Bowie has a stage show featuring his music called Lazarus. However, the musical was almost very different from its final form. Reportedly, it was almost a tribute to Bob Dylan as David Bowie wanted the music to consist of fake songs written by the “Blowin’ in the Wind” singer.

Lazarus is a jukebox musical featuring David Bowie’s music. The show is a spiritual sequel to the movie The Man Who Fell to Earth, which starred Bowie. The musical continues the story of Thomas Newton, a humanoid alien stuck on Earth. Lazarus premiered off-Broadway in 2015, a few months before Bowie’s death.
During the making of Lazarus, Bowie had a different idea than using his music. In an interview with GQ, novelist Michael Cunningham shared what Bowie originally envisioned for the show.

R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned may be the most unexpected sequel in recent memory, and in a year that’s seen Eraser: Reborn and Blade of the 47 Ronin that’s saying a lot. The 2013 original was a Men in Black style action comedy that featured Ryan Reynolds as a ghostly cop protecting the living from undead threats. It was also an expensive flop, the kind studios want to forget, not make sequels, or in this case, prequels, to.
Set in 1876, R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned is the story of Sheriff Roy Pulsipher, played by Jeff Bridges in the original and Jeffrey Donovan this time around. Here he’s meeting his daughter Charlotte and her fiance Angus at the train station when a robbery occurs and he’s killed in a shootout.

In “Frybread Face and Me,” Benny Lovell might be a few years away from the edge of 17, but the 12-year-old Indian kid has a passion for Fleetwood Mac. It’s his fondness for the band, its witchy vocalist Stevie Nicks as well as for dolls that has his parents sending him from San Diego to his maternal grandmother on the Navajo reservation in northern Arizona. But before he gets on the bus headed east, adult Benny in voice-over offers a caveat: “If you think no one does dysfunction like Fleetwood Mac, then you haven’t met my family.” It’s 1990 and a summer that initially smacks of exile and punishment becomes one of discovery — self-discovery to be sure, but also cultural and familial.
Keir Tallman stars as Benny, the “Me” of writer-director Billy Luther’s warm debut narrative feature. Luther, of the Navajo, Hopi and Pueblo Laguna nations, has made feature documentaries.

It's always interesting to see what happens when a director tries their hand at a film unlike any they've made before or since. Consider David Fincher's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," a whimsical romantic fantasy drama far removed tonally from the grim thrillers and dark character studies the masses are accustomed to seeing from the "Se7en" and "Social Network" helmer.
John Carpenter's "Starman" is his "Benjamin Button," at least in that respect. There are times the 1984 sci-fi film recalls the director's down-and-dirty action flicks, just as there are visuals and scenes that speak to his horror oeuvre. But for the most part, "Starman" plays out as a love story by road movie, albeit where one of the leads is a visitor from a distant planet. That would be the titular character, a cordial extra-terrestrial being who crash-lands on Earth after their spacecraft is shot down by...

I knew nothing about Ultraman when I sat down to watch "Shin Ultraman," and I'll be perfectly honest: when the credits rolled, I still didn't know much about Ultraman.
The new film from director Shinji Higuchi is a modernized update of the classic Japanese character, a skyscraper-sized alien who defends the Earth from various threats, both internal (those blasted kaiju just keep emerging from the ground) and external (our planet is apparently on the radar of every scheming alien in the galaxy). When he's not punching giant monsters in the face, Ultraman lives among us as a (regular-sized) blank-faced government bureaucrat. And as the film makes clear, he has many, many problems to deal with — "Shin Ultraman" resets itself with a new evil plot every 30 minutes or so, with each solved problem escalating into a new crisis.
I'd be lying if I said I could follow it all. This is...

The third week of September finally brings a glimmer of hope to the box office in the form of Viola Davis and her film The Woman King. Full disclosure, this isn’t my type of movie, I like some warrior movies, but they aren’t the type of films I rush out to see. However, being a fan of Viola Davis, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t intrigued by seeing her in the type of role we have never seen her play before. I think you combine that level of curiosity among moviegoers and the film’s quite solid reviews. You have a recipe for the first film to open in the 20 Million range since Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero did nearly a month ago. The studio is playing it slightly more modest, saying The Woman King is only tracking to open around 12 Million.

Ever since letter-writing campaigns got the original "Star Trek" a third season, science fiction fans have beat the drum for their favorite shows that got prematurely canceled. Sometimes it works: "Jericho" got a second season thanks to fans mailing bags of nuts to the studio. Other times it doesn't: "Firefly" fans managed to get a movie, but never the revived series they wanted. Honestly, that's probably for the best given what we now know about Joss Whedon and Adam Baldwin.
While we don't hold out a lot of actual hope for the shows below to come back, this article highlights sci-fi series from the last several decades that should have run longer, either because they ended poorly/awkwardly or just because they were way too short. Where possible, because we're nothing if not constructive, suggestions are included as to how a continuation today might go. Here are 12 canceled sci-fi shows that deserve a second chance.

Given Serinda Swan’s announced exit from Coroner, the question moving forward isn’t so much, “What will the series look like without its titular Jenny Cooper?” but “Will it even return at all?”
As Stateside Coroner fans gear up to watch Season 4 — starting Sunday, Oct. 2 on The CW, where it will lead out of the fellow Canadian drama Family Law — they may be wondering if they’ll in fact be watching its swan song.

Sylvester Pemberton aka Starman has a dark tale to finally tell in this exclusive sneak peek from the DC’s Stargirl Season 3 premiere (airing Wednesday, Aug. 31 on The CW).
As chronicled in Stargirl‘s May 2020 series premiere, Starman (played by Joel McHale, now a series regular) was impaled by one of Icicle’s namesake weapons during the Og Jsa’s epic, 10-years-ago clash with the Injustice Society. For the first time since news of his sudden exit broke last week, former Superman & Lois star Jordan Elsass has shed some light on his decision to leave the show after two seasons.
“It’s been a tough few weeks, as you might imagine, with everything going on with the show,” Elsass says in a new video recorded for a fan on Cameo. “It’s sad, it’s a real shame. I know that I was pumped for Season 3, for sure, but what are you going to do? Anyway, mental health is definitely 100-percent priority. It’s pinnacle. It’s got to take precedence.

Confirming months of speculation about The CW‘s future, local-tv giant Nexstar Media Group announced Monday that it will acquire a 75 percent ownership stake in the broadcast network.
The CW’s current co-owners, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global, will each retain a 12.5 percent minority stake, allowing both companies to continue producing original scripted content for The CW. Mark Pedowitz, who has served as the network’s chairman and CEO since 2011, will continue to fill that role and oversee day-to-day operations following the sale.

It's been an excruciatingly long hiatus, but Stargirl Season 3 is almost here.
The series was initially set for a midseason bow on The CW, but it subsequently got pushed to the fall, and now, we're getting a late summer launch.
It's been confusing, but the series will be back on August 31 at 8/7c, and we have the official trailer to prove it.
Stargirl set itself apart from the other superhero shows on The CW when it launched, and if the new trailer is any indication, it will continue to forge its own path, which is refreshing.
There are many big moments in the trailer, including a lot of Joel McHale, now a series regular.
Brec Bassinger teased the season at The CW upfronts to TV Line.
"You know what, I'm just gonna say it," Bassinger told the outlet.

Stargirl is poised to learn from Starman “some pretty great tricks” in Season 3 — but does the cosmic staff’s original wielder have a problem with his protege’s mission to help local baddies “break good”?
Premiering Wednesday, Aug. 31 at 8/7c, DC’s Stargirl Season 3 features Joel McHale as a series regular, now that Sylvester Pemberton aka Starman has somewhat improbably resurfaced, alive, in Blue Valley, eager to help Courtney Whitmore (played by Brec Bassinger) realize her potential as the Og Jsa leader’s successor-of-sorts.

Well, a lot of our favorite Riverdale characters are dead when this week’s episode opens… but luckily, people don’t stay dead in Riverdale for long.
We pick up with Cheryl mourning at the grave of Nana Rose, who was struck down by Percival’s plague that also took the lives of first-born kids Archie, Jughead, Toni, Fangs and Dagwood. (But Baby Anthony is still alive. Hmmm.) “We weren’t quite yet worm food,” though, Jughead assures us in narration from beyond the grave. Their bodies are being kept in a deep freeze by Dr. Curdle while Cheryl and...

When one thinks of a CW series, bulky, constructed frontier dresses and dingy, scratchy-looking shirts don’t ever come to mind. The upcoming Walker prequel, though, will aim to make 1800s fashion as fetch as it can.
Set in the late 1800s and filmed in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Walker Independence follows Abby Walker (played by Arrow‘s Katherine McNamara), an affluent and tough-minded Bostonian whose husband is murdered before her eyes while on their journey out West. After crossing paths with Calian (Justin Johnson Cortez), a curious Apache tracker, Abby arrives in the town of Independence, Texas, where she...
