Maya Rudolph returned to Saturday Night Live as host on the latest episode, and the former cast member reprising one of her most beloved sketches: Impersonating Beyoncé as guest on the chicken wing-eating YouTube interview series Hot Ones.
The original sketch aired back in 2021 when Rudolph served as guest host, with “Beyoncé” memorably wilting under the heat of the chicken wings. “This is the only thing that I attempted that I did not slay, and that bothered both me and my husband, my husband is Jay Z,” Rudolph’s Beyoncé...

Exclusive: Soapstone Comedy Presents, a VR comedy series from Meta and The Soapstone Comedy Club, is set to premiere Thursday, May 16 in Meta Horizon Worlds.
The series will include six immersive comedy shows debuting monthly through October at The Soapstone Comedy Club in Hanalei Bay. “VR being introduced to the comedy world is a massive move — now the introverts can get in on the action and if you can’t get out for a night, you just pop your headset on, while your kids are destroying your house,” said Pharoah. “Really though, it’s a magnanimous leap for technology.

Netflix’s Good Times reboot has drawn ire from audiences and national organizations such as the NAACP for its perceived stereotypical depictions of African Americans since its trailer was first released on March 27. That same day, a Change.org petition, which has gathered some 5,000 signatures, was launched calling on viewers to boycott the new show which “promotes violence, culture destruction of the Black community and alcohol abuse,” the creator of the petition wrote.
Showrunner Ranada Shepard understands the knee-jerk reaction.
“You haven’t seen J.B. [Smoove] and Yvette [Nicole Brown] and Marsai [Martin] and Jay Pharoah and Slink Johnson on couches all across America, which typically happens when you’re rolling out a show. There was no framing that the audience had, it was just: Watch this and form an opinion. And, they watched and they formed an opinion,” Shepard tells THR in the conversation below.

Fifty years ago, “Good Times” became the first sitcom to depict a two-parent Black American family. Now, Netflix is debuting a present-day animated reboot chronicling the Evanses two generations after the original. Set in Chicago’s Cabrini Green projects in the same apartment from the 1970s dramedy, the series follows Reggie (J.B. Smoove), his wife Beverly (Yvette Nicole Brown) and their children, Junior (Jay Pharoah), Grey (Marsai Martin) and Dalvin (Slink Johnson). Black people aren’t a monolith, and respectability politics certainly aren’t the answer to racism, sexism, bigotry and homophobia. Yet it’s puzzling that this mind-numbing series is how creator Ranada Shepard is paying homage to such a classic show while trying to speak to 21st-century Black people. It’s also very clear why Netflix decided against sending out screeners for review.
In the season opener, “Meet the Evans of New,” we learn about the new occupants of apartment 17C.

The title of Eric Monte and Mike Evans’ Norman Lear-produced sitcom Good Times was designed to be welcoming and inclusive. The theme song was a litany of poverty-driven adversity — temporary layoffs, easy credit rip-offs, etc. — interjected with the chorus of “Good Times!,” setting up the story of the Evans family weathering the travails of the Chicago projects with a mix of pride, determination and a whole lot of dysfunctional domestic affection.
The title of Netflix’s new 10-episode animated Good Times has taken on an almost antagonistic quality, since the first trailer was released and devotees of the original blasted those two minutes for being a violation of said original’s style and spirit.
Cavalcade of caricatures! Good Times!
Drug-dealing baby! Good Times!

The first trailer for Netflix’s animated reboot of the iconic ’70s sitcom Good Times was released last week, and the reaction has been… let’s say, mixed.
The original Norman Lear sitcom ran for six seasons from 1974 to 1979 and earned praise for its portrayal of a working-class Black family. The animated reboot follows a new generation of the Evans family as they keep their heads above water in a Chicago housing project, but the tone of the trailer, complete with a drug-dealing baby, didn’t exactly rub fans the right way.
While speaking with THR, original Good Times stars John Amos (James Evans) and BernNadette Stanis (Thelma) shared their thoughts on the trailer. Both actors made it clear that they aren’t ready to pass judgment until they’re able to see full episodes. “I really can’t form an opinion, as I’ve not seen any of the episodes yet,...

Stars of the original Good Times are weighing in after the trailer for Netflix’s forthcoming animated reboot led some fans to question whether the new project will indeed be “dynomite.”
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year after premiering in February 1974, Good Times focused on the Chicago-based Evans family, with the Norman Lear-produced series running for six seasons and earning praise for its realistic portrayal of a working-class Black family. After the first promo debuted last week for Netflix’s animated exploration of the Evans family’s current generation, plenty of social media users expressed surprise that the new series — which appears to double down on stereotypes with such elements as a drug-dealing infant — didn’t highlight the positive themes from the initial show.

It’s a feat only 29 other SNL cast members have pulled off: With tonight’s episode of Saturday Night Live, Heidi Gardner has appeared in 500 sketches.
That’s according to longtime SNL statistician Mike Murray, who hosts The Saturday Night Network’s weekly SNL by the Numbers podcast. (Full disclosure: The Snn is LateNighter’s podcast partner.)
Tonight’s game show sketch “Couple Goals” was Gardner’s 500th sketch.
Gardner, who’s in her seventh SNL season, is only the 30th cast member to hit the 500 sketch milestone, an honor she shares with two other current cast members, Mikey Day and (of course) Kenan Thompson, whose 21 seasons on the show put him at the top of the list.
Lest you think there’s a direct correlation between one’s tenure on the show and their sketch count, there are quite a few SNL cast members who’ve made it to...

Yvette Nicole Brown Defends Good Times Role, Insists ‘Edgy’ Netflix Reboot ‘Lines Up With My Values’
Yvette Nicole Brown is content to let the Good Times roll, pushing back against criticism of her involvement with Netflix’s reboot of the sitcom.
Dropping Friday, April 12, the forthcoming Good Times follow-up is an animated — and, as evidenced by Wednesday’s trailer, a noticeably raunchier — take on the 1970s classic, centered on the latest generation of the Evans family. Brown voices Beverly Evans, the wife of cab driver Reggie (J.B. Smoove), and she’s taken to social media to call out fans questioning her participation in the new series.

Yvette Nicole Brown, who voices the character of Beverly Evans in the new animated version of Good Times for Netflix, promises it will be an “edgier, more irreverent” reboot of Norman Lear‘s groundbreaking TV sitcom.
After one of Brown’s followers wrote on X Wednesday that “I’m surprised you attached yourself to this project. Looks nothing like the show we grew up on,” Brown responded with a promise that the reboot will offer as much, if not more, than the original.
“This show is edgier and more irreverent than the Good Times of our childhood but it’s still a show about family, fighting the system and working to make things better despite where you start out in the world,” Brown wrote. “That 100% lines up with my values.”

Jay Pharoah, known for “Saturday Night Live” and “The Blackening,” will host “The Quiz with Balls,” a new Fox game show.
Each episode will feature two families competing for $100,000 in a “battle of the balls,” combining a high-stakes quiz show with a large-scale physical competition.
“When I got hit up about hosting an epic face-off between big brains and even bigger balls, I was like … ’I got this,’” Pharoah said in a statement. “Then I found out it was a game show series on Fox and thought … even better!”
The contestants stand on a high platform over a pool, where they must work together during a multiple choice quiz. Each answer is allocated to a spot with a giant ball positioned behind it. If the answer is chosen correctly, the ball will roll down and stop just before hitting the player. However, if the answer is wrong, the ball will...

Jay Pharoah has been set as the host of Fox’s new game The Quiz with Balls. The series is set to premiere this summer.
As Deadline exclusively revealed earlier this month, the quiz show pits brains against balls combining a high-stakes quiz show with a large-scale physical competition. Each episode features two families competing for $100k in a “battle of the balls.”
The project hails from Big Brother and The Voice creator John de Mol’s Talpa Studios and Fremantle’s Eureka Productions, marking de Mol and Eureka’s latest project with Fox. They are also behind The Floor, the Rob Lowe-hosted game show that launched in early January.
The network teases contestants must work together while standing on a high platform over a pool as they face a multiple-choice quiz where each answer is allocated to a spot with a giant ball positioned up behind it.

When director Tim Story’s horror comedy The Blackening was released back in June, co-writer and star Dewayne Perkins told Variety that he envisioned the film being the start of a franchise, one that could bring back the “same group, sprinkle in some new people. I feel like we’ve got something good, and I love the dynamic, but fresh blood always turns things up a little bit.” Now Variety has confirmed that a sequel to The Blackening is officially in development!
The Blackening didn’t exactly set the box office of fire, earning just $18.5 million… but since the movie had a budget of $3 million (plus another $2 million for marketing), that’s enough for producer MRC and domestic distributor Lionsgate to feel that it’s worth going back to for a sequel. They’re developing the follow-up with Perkins, co-writer Tracy Oliver, and producer E. Brian Dobbins.

After scaring up $18 million in theaters earlier this year, horror-comedy The Blackening is getting a sequel from Lionsgate, Variety has exclusively announced this afternoon.
Variety notes, “producer MRC and domestic distributor Lionsgate have entered into talks with Dewayne Perkins, Tracy Oliver and producer E. Brian Dobbins to develop a follow-up film.”
The first film was made on a production budget of just $5 million, so there’s needless to say lots of potential for this to become a profitable Scary Movie-type horror franchise.
Stay tuned for more on The Blackening 2 as we learn it.
The Blackening, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherf****** game.

MRC and Lionsgate are developing a sequel to “The Blackening,” the hit horror-comedy from Dewayne Perkins and Tracy Oliver.
After the microbudget production (just $5 million) made more than $18 million at the box office, producer MRC and domestic distributor Lionsgate have entered into talks with Perkins, Oliver and producer E. Brian Dobbins to develop a follow-up film.
Directed by Tim Story and co-written by Perkins and Oliver, “The Blackening” follows a group of college friends who reunite for Juneteenth weekend and are hunted by a killer who asks them to determine who is the Blackest among them — lampooning the common horror movie trope that sees the Black character die first. Perkins initially conceived the story as a sketch for his comedy troupe 3Peat, which developed into a short for Comedy Central, before Oliver reached out to develop it into a feature.

Spoilers for "Invincible" follow.
Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley's "Invincible" is an unusual superhero comic. It blends the genre's aesthetics and tropes together into a mighty sweet cocktail, yet it eschews the storytelling mode of these comics: the "floating timeline," where no characters age and the status quo remains supreme. No, "Invincible" is the rare serialized superhero story with linear, forward-moving storytelling and, ultimately, an ending.
Not to worry, though; the first season of Prime Video's "Invincible" series mostly adapted the first 13 issues/three volumes of the comic, out of 144 issues/25 volumes. Even with season 2 finally premiering, the series is nowhere near the comic's conclusion. If all goes as planned, fans will be watching the animated adventures of Mark Grayson/Invincible (Steven Yeun) for many more seasons.
That's not to say season 2 hasn't already teased future storylines. Thus far, "Invincible" has taken an adaptation approach similar to "The Walking Dead,...

Plot: Still reeling from Nolan’s betrayal in Season One, Mark struggles to rebuild his life as he faces a host of new threats while battling his greatest fear – that he might become his father without even knowing it.
Review: The first season of Invincible was a pleasant surprise. Few animated series have been able to not only tell a mature story but do so outside of the familiar universes of Marvel or DC. Robert Kirkman’s series, based on his Image Comics series of the same name, introduced the world to a new hero in Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) and his twisted alien hero/villain father, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). After the eight-episode first season and a standalone holiday special focused on Atom Eve (Gillian Jacobs), Invincible returns after over two years with a sophomore season with new characters and story arcs pulled right from the comics. Along with some new twists,...

Debbie Grayson (Sandra Oh) is tormented by a cabinet door that won’t shut. It suffered a shoddy repair job following the calamity that upended Debbie’s life one month ago, when her husband, Nolan (J.K. Simmons), the extraterrestrial superhero known as Omni-Man, revealed his mission to colonize Earth for his homeland of Viltrum. Nolan leveled the city of Chicago, killing thousands of people and nearly murdering their son, Mark (Steven Yeun), before flying off into the atmosphere. Debbie’s frequent trips to the kitchen for glasses of wine culminate in clashes with the door, which remains slightly ajar—a stubborn symbol of the anger and grief that she hasn’t figured out how to compartmentalize.

Some very convincing entrepreneurs present two contestants with their business plans and products.
And it's up to the contestants to determine which entrepreneurs are pitching real ideas versus fake ones.
Or are otherwise known as "snake oil salesmen."

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from “The Blackening,” now streaming on Starz and available on VOD.
Tracy Oliver is best-known as the co-writer of “Girls Trip” and the creator of “Harlem” and “First Wives Club,” but she’s also quite proficient with numbers. And in terms of the success of her latest film, “The Blackening,” the numbers tell an important tale.
“I don’t think people understand the math of it all,” Oliver says, settling into a plush beige armchair in the lobby of the 1 Hotel South Beach in Miami Beach on a sweltering day in June. “Even my family thought I made more on “Girls Trip” than I actually did.”
Despite the 2017 comedy becoming a massive box office hit — earning more than $140 million worldwide — Oliver didn’t have any backend on the film. “It was considered such a risk when we made it that they weren’t going...
