- Born in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, Shashaa Tirupati moved to Vancouver in Canada with her family due to turbulence in the valley. Impressed with a six year old Sasha's rendition of Lata Mangeshkar's 'Jao Re Jogi Tum Jao Re' from the 1966 film Amrapali (1966), her father decided that Shasha should learn music. Her father was adamant that she train in Hindustani vocals from Allahabad, and so she studied under Kamala Bose and later under Girija Devi in India. All through her childhood, the child prodigy won singing competitions in both India and Canada, and appeared on radio shows. She learnt to play the guitar, keyboards and harmonium, and also plays the African kazoo. After completing her 12th from India - which she had to again repeat in Canada since she was underage - and armed with a senior diploma in music, she won undergraduate pre-med scholarships worth $24000.
A major turning point in her career came in the year 2007, when she decided to drop out of Medical School and move to India in order to become a full time playback singer and one day work with A.R. Rahman. The inspiration to take such a drastic decision, which didn't go down well with her parents, came from the songs "Tere Bina" and "Jaage Hain Der Tak" composed by A.R. Rahman for the film Guru (2007). After moving to India, Shashaa started participating in various reality TV shows such as 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa', 'Idea Rocks India', Junoon and IPL Rockstars and sang jingles in order to stay afloat.
In the year 2010, a prominent music composer told her in a reality show, that she doesn't have the voice to be a singer and that she was actually a very bad singer. That nasty remark left her demotivated and she stopped auditioning for any more songs for three years. In the year 2013, A.R. Rahman was auditioning for a Hindustani classical choir for Coke Studio. After a lot of cajoling by her friends, she decided to take part in it and became one of the seven girls selected for the event. This event opened a new chapter in her life. One month after Coke Studio, Shashaa received a call from A.R. Rahman, who offered her the song 'Vaada Vaada' in Kochadaiiyaan (2014). Finally, her dream of working with the maestro had come true.
Shashaa has sung in Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and Telugu films as a playback singer and voice-over artist. She also sang in Bengali, Arabic, Konkani and Malayalam, and appeared on MTV Unplugged. At one point Shasha used to speak ten different languages. Shashaa also has her own YouTube channel where she releases cover version of songs, singing tutorials and her self composed songs. So far, Sashaa has sung over 200 songs in 13 different languages.
In the year 2018, Shashaa received her first National Film Award for the song 'Vaan' from the movie Kaatru Veliyidai (2017) composed by A.R.Rahman.- IMDb Mini Biography By: Anonymous
- Sticking to morals and values we inculcated growing up has made the journey longer but more fruitful and worth my while. I wouldn't go back and change a thing today.
- [on dropping out of medical school] I don't regret any part of my life or my decisions. I am still healing people - not through medicine but with music.
