Title: Detention Director: Joseph Kahn Starring: Josh Hutcherson, Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke, Aaron David Johnson, Dane Cook, Walter Perez Undoubtedly the idea was to bring out the long-delayed horror-comedy “Detention,” starring Josh Hutcherson, after the profile-raising release of “The Hunger Games” last month, but there almost certainly was also a significant amount of email back-and-forth from Hutcherson’s management team with other studio folk about how to downplay its theatrical unspooling, and kind of dump the body from a slowly moving van, without hoping too many people notice. A film of boundless energy and if not empty voice then at least wholly scattershot imagination, the over-the-top ”Detention” debuted last year at SXSW, which seems a [ Read More ]...

Eight years ago director Joseph Kahn made the critically-despised comedy Torque. His motorcycle joke was not a part of the Fast and Furious meathead-aimed knock-offs, but instead parodied their stupidity. While Torque did feel like it was no different from that genre at times, it was an overall success in its lampooning of that horrid brand of action filmmaking. His latest film, Detention is, somehow, even more manic. Not only does Kahn present the pop-culture of today and the 90s, but also covers every genre imaginable.
From a high school love story to a slasher pic, Detention has it all. There’s the cynical reject Riley (Shanley Caswell), the cool kid Clapton Davis (Josh Hutcherson), the mindless cheerleader Ione (Spencer Locke), the creepy nerd Sander Sanderson (Aaron David Johnson), and a handful of other stereotypes, which Kahn dutifully deconstructs. They all face daily teenage problems, drama portrayed in the form of a serial killer,...

Slasher time travel fest 'Detention' has been acquired by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (Spwa). The Joseph Kahn ('Torque') helmed picture which stars Josh Hutcherson ('Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant') and Shanley Caswell (below) alongside 'not-so-funny'-man Dane Cook will hopefully receieve an official release date sooner now rather than later. Spencer Locke ('Resident Evil: Extinction'), Aaron David Johnson, Parker Bagley, Alison Woods, Walter Perez and Carrie Wiita all co-star. Check out the plot and what Kahn had to say on the acquisition below....

At first glance, Joseph Kahn's Detention looks, as I've said before, like it might be just a "post-Scream meta-slasher movie." But the trailer [1] we saw for the film suggested that it is a lot more than that, or at least a lot more crazy than that. Reviews out of SXSW, where the film premiered, were slightly mixed, but the enthusiastic ones were very enthusiastic. In short, I'm hoping that Detention will be a movie that can satiate my hunger for a wild genre movie in the same way that Attack the Block satisfies as a teen-oriented summer sci-fi thriller. We'll all get to see Detention sometime in the coming months thanks to Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, which has picked up all rights to distribute the film. A press release and a THR [2] news break offer up the news, and the press release giddily repeats one summarization of the film: "an apocalyptic,...

Complete Coverage of SXSW Film 2011

A downtrodden 17-year-old girl is sent to detention where she must survive a slasher film killer and save the world in time for prom.
Cast: Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook, Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke, Aaron David Johnson (World Premiere)
Who’S It For?: This is especially for those just leaving high school, as for the right person, Detention will play right on cue to chords of pre-adulthood angst. As for everyone else, some appetite for 100% pop sugar is needed for full enjoyment of this movie.
Overall
Roaring from the under-appreciated kinetics of his debut motorcycle-actioner Torque, music video director Joseph Kahn has concocted Detention, a delicious MegaGulp of wonderfully true teen satire. Joseph Kahn (Torque) believed in himself and his film, Detention, so much that he financed the teen horror comedy himself. He made every decision and what’s on the screen is his baby.
The film, starring Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook, Walter Perez and Parker Bagley, follows a high school senior who is given detention on the night of her prom. Throughout the night, her friends are terrorized and killed by a movie serial killer.
Joseph brought the film to SXSW for its world premiere and it definitely did not disappoint. The film is filled with pop culture references, quick edits and is beautifully shot, it’s definitely the work of a stellar music video director.
I talked to Joseph the morning after the premiere and he was definitely in good spirits. We talked about his decision to finance the film himself, not finishing casting till 2 weeks into the film and finding the perfect actors.

Here's an appropriately chaotic interview for the chaotic high school film "Detention" by Joseph Kahn, who stopped by the IFC Crossroads House with his star (and executive producer) Josh Hutcherson and more cast members than we could fit on our couch, including Shanley Caswell, the film's charmingly perturbed female lead, and Aaron David Johnson, "Detention"'s dorky comic relief. I would try to explain what "Detention"'s about but we'd be hear all night: in short, it's a high school comedy and a slasher flick and a parody of high school comedies and slasher flicks. Kahn's film, which he also co-wrote and financed with his own money, is a crazy, caffeinated collage of pop culture quotations that eventually reveals itself as a enormous (and enormously goofy) meditation on the cyclical nature of pop culture.

...Or we should say "Cheat Sheets" since this year's SXSW Film Festival boasts over 140 films, requiring more than just one page to cover every single one of the narrative and documentary features that will be playing in Austin from March 11th through 19th. While the festival has already provided a very helpful schedule to flip through and Pdf of the screening grid online, consider this your quick hit guide to all the features at the festival - every title leads to its corresponding festival page in addition to links to trailers, official sites, filmmakers' Facebook pages and Twitter accounts so you can follow the action from the festival or from home.
Meanwhile, there will be plenty of action during these next two weeks on IFC.com where, in addition to our live video page, Matt Singer (@mattsinger) and I (@mfrushmore) will be filing reviews and interviews throughout the film festival.

The Detention Movie Trailer has premiered. Joseph Kahn‘s Detention (2011) stars Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook, Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke, Aaron David Johnson, Walter Perez, Erica Shaffer, Parker Bagley, and Alison Woods. Detention (2011)’s plot synopsis: “a teen horror-comedy where the local students of Grizzly Lake must survive their final year of high school. Standing in their way is a slasher movie killer who has seemingly come to life. It becomes a race against time to stop the killer and save the world – if only they can get out of detention. The Detention cuts through prom. Most of them don’t have dates anyway.” One of the things that is hilarious about this movie trailer is that director Joseph Kahn makes fun of one of his previous films, Torque. The high school students actually seem to be high school student age in this horror comedy film and very Dawson’s Creek self aware.

Torque director Joseph Kahn has made a very strange-looking teen slasher movie called Detention. The film will soon premiere at SXSW, and the trailer has arrived today. While the opening of the trailer might make you think this is a routine post-Scream meta-slasher movie, be sure to watch all the way through. Because this one goes to some unexpected places by the end. If nothing else, the trailer sells Detention's very high 'Wtf?' factor, and that's pretty great. MTV [1] presents the trailer, and at first I was a little put off. There's an opening gag about Torque, which is fun, and Holy Fuck's song 'Frenchy's' [2] drew me in. But there's a good little bit of high school drama and politics to set up, and that bit of the trailer isn't cut so well. But then it goes off the rails with shots of murder, aliens, and all sorts of other weirdness.

Joseph Kahn is no slouch. His new school-based slasher project 'Detention' will premiere this March at the SXSW in Texas and to celebrate his speedy turnaround the first offical still from the movie has arrived online. It features young cast members and obvious slasher fodder Josh Hutcherson ('Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant'), Shanley Caswell, cutie Spencer Locke ('Resident Evil: Extinction') and Aaron David Johnson. Kahn co-scripted 'Detention' with Mark Palermo and, as you may remember, will feature a serial killer by the name of Cinderhella. Not-so-funnyman Dane Cook also stars.
