The brutality of the international drug trade was front and center this week at the trial of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán, with one witness testifying in chillingly calm tones about dozens of gangland murders. The only catch? El Chapo wasn’t the murderer in question.
In a riveting back and forth with prosecutors on Tuesday, Juan Carlos Ramírez Abadía, a Colombian drug lord better known as “Chupeta,” calmly described how he meted out terrifying violence against anyone who opposed him, threatened him, flipped on him, or simply knew too much.

Winners of the 70th annual Directors Guild of America Awards will be revealed on Feb. 3 in a ceremony hosted by Judd Apatow at the Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Prizes will be doled out in three film and eight television categories as listed below.
Unlike other show biz awards ceremonies, the DGA fetes each of the five nominees for Best Feature Film Director, bringing them onstage for a presentation and acceptance speech. This year’s contenders for this important precursor to the Oscar are Guillermo del Toro (“The Shape of Water”), Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”), Martin McDonagh (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), Christopher Nolan (“Dunkirk”) and Jordan Peele (“Get Out”). All but McDonagh vie at the Academy Awards as well; he was snubbed in favor of Paul Thomas Anderson (“Phantom Thread”).
Peele also vies in the competitive First-Time Feature category, along with Geremy Jasper (“Patti Cake$”), WIlliam Oldroyd (“Lady...

For PlayStation 4 owners, Game Informer’s extensive coverage of Horizon Zero Dawn is the gift that keeps on giving. Not only have we clocked eyes on some truly beautiful artwork for the post-post-apocalyptic RPG, but such a platform has allowed developer Guerrilla Games to peel back the layers of this most intriguing new IP.
Coming out of the PS4 Pro reveal, which lifted the lid on Zero Dawn in shimmering 4K, Game Informer now has word regarding some of the story details underpinning Guerrilla’s preternatural world. In fact, according to the game’s Lead Writer John Gonzalez, players are in for a surprise when it comes to the depth and richness of the studio’s RPG.

One of our favorite mantras around the AfterElton offices is “because visibility matters.” Indeed, the idea that gay and bisexual men need to be visible, both to ourselves and to the wider culture, is one of the principle reasons AfterElton.com even exists. After all, it is only by being visible to family, friends and the world that we’ve been able to overcome the stereotypes and bigotry used to justify discrimination against the Glbt community.
That quest for visibility explains why we have done so many polls including the AfterElton Hot 100, the Fifty Greatest Gay Movies, the Top 50 Gay TV Characters, and the 50 Best Gay Books. After all, it’s not as if Entertainment Weekly is going to ask gay and bisexual men which guys we think are the hottest, which movies mean the most to us or, in the case of our latest poll, which celebrities we most admire.
