Jason Reitman and a coalition of 35 other filmmakers have together acquired one of Los Angeles’ most historic and iconic movie palaces.
The group together are the new owners and caretakers of the Village Theater in LA’s Westwood neighborhood. The 93-year-old theater, which is a block from the UCLA campus and continues to host many studio premieres weekly or monthly, is distinctive for its soaring tower, neon marquee, and massive screen. The Village Theater has been hosting premieres since the 1930s; in 2023 alone, 50 movies premiered there.
The new owners will work to preserve the theater and upgrade it to show both first-run films and repertory programming, equipping it with 35mm, 70mm, and digital projection. The group will also influence the lobby galleries, the theater’s programming, its picture and sound capabilities, and will even showcase memorabilia from their personal collections, such as props, costumes, and film prints.

As “The Sopranos” turns 25 years old, its esteemed creator David Chase isn’t exactly celebrating. In a recent interview with The Times UK, Chase proclaimed television’s golden age over and lamented over the changing state of the business. He suggested that today’s TV gatekeepers are no longer interested in the serious-minded fare that Chase broke new ground with “The Sopranos” and that continued over the next 25 years with the likes of “The Wire,” “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad” and more. Chase called this “a 25-year blip.”
“Yes, this is the 25th anniversary, so of course it’s a celebration,” he said. “But perhaps we shouldn’t look at it like that. Maybe we should look at it like a funeral….We’re going back to where I was. They’re going to have commercials.”
Chase is already correct, as top streamers such as Netflix and Prime Video have introduced ad-supported plans in recent months.

This January marks the 25th anniversary of “The Sopranos,” one of the most acclaimed and beloved shows ever. David Chase’s mobster drama paved the way for other gritty, boundary-pushing dramas, and is considered to have kicked off what’s often called the modern “Golden Age” of television. But now, that Golden Age is over, according to Chase himself.
In an interview with the Times U.K. (via The Guardian), Chase referred to the 25th anniversary of “The Sopranos” as a “funeral” for the type of sophisticated, ambitious television that his iconic show made popular and buzzy. He referred to the age of Prestige or Peak TV — which saw the rise of acclaimed shows like “Succession,” “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad,” and “The Wire,” among many others — as a “25-year blip.”
“And to be clear, I’m not talking only about ‘The Sopranos,’ but a lot of other hugely talented people...

In a sign of Hollywood’s escalating internal tensions, a prominent Directors Guild of America member openly advocated against the election of 10 writer-directors to the guild’s board earlier this month on the grounds that they were “primarily writers” and hailed from “fringe groups.”
In a leaked email that has been shared widely in the creative community, Linda Montanti, chair of the guild’s Western Ad/Upm Council, urged a bloc of DGA voters to not support the board candidacies of a number of multihyphenates who are members of both the DGA and WGA — some of whom have been outspoken about strike issues. The list includes writer-producer Boots Riley, Oscar-winning “Coda” writer-director Sian Heder, actor-filmmaker Justine Bateman, actor-writer Paul Scheer and “Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazin. The unorthodox move prompted DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter to contact the members affected to assure them that Montanti’s move was not condoned by top DGA leaders.

Horror Feature “My (Best Friend’S) Head Exploded” to Premiere in June: "Writer/Director Scott Bryan’s puppet-filled existential horror feature, “My (Best Friend’S) Head Exploded,” will have its two-weekend world premiere this June.
“My (Best Friend’s) Head Exploded” is a rebellious, existential, terrifyingly messy puppet feature made out of material things by actual people. It tells the story of Lydia, a coming-of-ageless vampire forced to deal with the loss of her best friend, Sam, after the pair conjures a moment of complete clarity which causes Sam’s head to explode.
In the aftermath, Lydia must contend with old ghosts, generational trauma, oppressive authority figures, and the confusing fear of infinity to set reality right and save her own sanity.
“I love making weird stuff that a studio would be afraid of and a computer couldn’t replicate,” Bryan said.

Yellow Veil Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to “The Becomers,” a genre-bending comedy written and directed by Zach Clark. The company will launch the film at the Marche Du Film in Cannes this week. “The Becomer” tells the story of a body-snatching alien who comes to Earth, reconnects with their partner, and tries to find their way in modern America.
“During the pandemic, I binged the original ‘Star Trek’ series for the first time and then I made this movie” Clark said about his latest film. “It felt like life as we knew it was ending, but then again, it also felt like that might not be the worst thing either. ‘The Becomers’ is a story of love, longing, and alienation. On May 10, the Directors Guild of America sent a message to members that exemplified the muddled situation in which writer-directors find themselves amid the ongoing writers strike. In the communication, the DGA advised its members that minor script changes — like cutting for time and making small edits to dialogue during production — may be required of writer-directors during the strike if they are working on a project they wrote only in their capacity as a director.
The DGA considers small script changes to typically be part of a director’s workload, and the union’s “no-strike” clause requires it to put a good-faith effort toward requiring members to continue directing during the strike. But the “strike rules” governing what members of the Writers Guild of America can do during its strike mandate something different — that “hyphenates” (writers who are employed in additional roles) are prohibited from performing these “(a) through (h...

The Sopranos creator David Chase has lined up his next project — and it’s not for HBO, the home of his seminal drama and with whose parent company he has a first-look deal.
Instead, Chase is teaming with the Disney-backed FX for a previously unproduced drama of his that sources describe as being about the witness protection program.
Chase is in the second of a five-year, first-look deal with Warner Bros. Discovery. The pact gives HBO and HBO Max first rights to anything that their treasured showrunner wants to do. Given the agreement and Chase’s long and celebrated history with HBO, it begs the question of why the premium cable network/streamer and even Warner Bros. Television aren’t connected at all with the new (er, recycled) Chase project?
Sources say HBO/HBO Max passed on Chase’s drama, which is definitely not the 2009 miniseries A Ribbon of Dreams...

Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney are gearing up to play a mother-daughter duo in “Echo Valley,” an Apple Studios feature from “Mare of Easttown” creator Brad Ingelsby.
Like the acclaimed HBO series, “Echo Valley” is rooted in southeastern Pennsylvania, where a grieving woman named Kate Garrett (Moore) lives in isolation on a 22-acre farm. Her days of boarding and training horses at Echo Valley Farm are interrupted when her wayward daughter Claire (Sweeney) shows up one night, covered in someone else’s blood. As the synopsis puts it, that sets into motion “a heart-pounding thriller about just how far a mother will go to save her child.”
BAFTA-winning director Michael Pearce will helm from Ingelsby’s script, developed with Michael Pruss. Ridley Scott will produce through his banner Scott Free, along with Pruss and Ingelsby. Kevin Walsh will produce for The Walsh Company under his multiyear deal with Apple TV...

Taissa Farmiga’s Sister Irene will return in “The Nun 2.”
For the latest film in the 2 billion-grossing “Conjuring” universe, Farmiga will star alongside Storm Reid, who was recently announced to join the New Line franchise. The original “Nun” movie — which followed Farmiga’s Sister Irene as she fought alongside Demian Bichir’s Father Burke to fend off the possession of the demon nun Valek in 1952 Romania — debuted in 2018 and earned 366 million worldwide on the way to becoming the top grossing in the franchise to date.
The film was a spinoff of 2016’s “The Conjuring 2,” which starred Farmiga’s older sister Vera, who has fronted three “Conjuring” films, turning the horror franchise into a bit of a family affair.
“The Nun 2” will be directed by Michael Chaves, who helmed the seventh and most recent entry, 2021’s “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.” Akela Cooper wrote the...

Showrunners Robert Siegel and D.V. DeVincentis set out to explore the story of how Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s sex tape was stolen with Hulu’s Pam and Tommy, in which Lily James and Sebastian Stan play Anderson and Lee.
The show received 10 Emmy nominations, including best limited series and nods for James, Stan and Seth Rogen, who served as an executive producer on the show and played Rand Gauthier, the man who stole the tape and whose story was first told in Amanda Chicago Lewis’ 2014 article for Rolling Stone, on which the show is based.

Hannah Fidell tells stories through the eyes and ears of her characters. The filmmaker behind "A Teacher," both the acclaimed film and the FX show, expresses point-of-view in a way that's both dramatic and cinematic. In the case of her episode of "Pam & Tommy," titled "Pam in Wonderland," the pauses can be as painful as the unsettling dialogue.
Fidell's episode is a change of pace for the series, stylistically speaking. Producer Craig Gillespie established an energetic and frenetic tone for all the chaos, but with this most recent bottle episode, Fidell went for a different pace. She depicts a brutal deposition and the pain...

Some people listen to that little inner voice, the one that tells them to avoid danger, run away, play it safe. Sebastian Stan is not one of those people. “More and more as I’ve gotten older, when I read something that really kind of freaks me out a little bit and I get the voice that’s like, ‘Don’t ever go near this,’ then I’m more drawn to it as a result,” the actor said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “I find usually that fear is a good indicator of something that I have to sort of step into perhaps to understand better.”
While Stan is best known to most mainstream movie fans as Marvel’s Winter Solider aka Bucky Barnes, the actor’s career extends far beyond the superhero fray. When he’s not battling crime and inner turmoil on a global scale, Stan has...

Cobie Smulders will now play Ann Coulter in “Impeachment: American Crime Story” after Betty Gilpin, who was originally set in the role, exited the cast due to scheduling complications during the pandemic.
Smulders is the newest addition to the cast of this season. This news comes just after FX released the official trailer on Wednesday. Smulders is known for playing Robin in the popular CBS sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” and was most recently seen as Dex Parios in “Stumptown,” which was canceled by ABC in Sept. 2020.
Gilpin shared her regrets about having to leave the role of Coulter on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in June. She called the situation “another Covid disappointment” before performing a comedic impression of the conservative media pundit reciting the children’s rhyme “Milk Milk Lemonade.” Gilpin said the impression took “a year [of] listening to Ann Coulter audiobooks” to perfect.

FX and 20th Television have released the first teaser trailer for “Impeachment: American Crime Story,” premiering on FX on Sept. 7 at 10 p.m.
This third installment of the “American Crime Story” franchise is based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book “A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President” and will tell the story of President Bill Clinton’s 1998 impeachment and his infamous affair with then-White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Clive Owen portrays Clinton, while Beanie Feldstein plays Lewinsky.
The trailer shows only the back of Feldstein’s Lewinsky, as she walks through the White House to meet Clinton with a gift in hand. As she enters the Oval Office, we hear Clinton’s secretary say: “Mr. President, Ms. Lewinsky’s here to see you.” Before Owen as Clinton can turn around in his chair, the trailer fades to black.

It takes audacity for an actress to play a high school teacher who grooms her student, but it’s someone such as Kate Mara who embraces the challenge to meticulously play such knotty femmes with no sweat results. Mara portrays such a protagonist – or antagonist depending on how you view it, which only underscores her canniness with her craft—in FX’s Hannah Fidell limited series A Teacher, which follows the build-up and fallout of a scandalous affair between an older woman and her pupil. It’s a more-often-than not scandal that has frequented headlines since the 1990s with such teachers as Pamela Smart and the late Mary Kay Letourneau, and it’s an arresting subject to cover in the throes of #MeToo. Mara brings a subtle sympathy to the intricacies of Claire Wilson, forcing viewers to ponder who’s guiltier: The predator or the prey? A Teacher is another...

Consider This: Conversations highlight television’s award-worthy productions through panel discussions with the artists themselves. The above video is in partnership by FX, produced by IndieWire’s Creative Producer Leonardo Adrian Garcia, and hosted by Libby Hill.
There’s something so seductive about second chances. Who among us hasn’t looked at a decision we’ve made or a path we’ve chosen and wondered what would have happened if we’d gone a different way? If we could go back and have a do over, knowing now what we could never have known then.
This is not necessarily what Hannah Fidell was thinking when making the FX on Hulu limited series “A Teacher,” an adaptation of her eponymous feature film released seven years earlier. But even though that wasn’t the intent, it was still the opportunity, and judging from the significant changes between the two works, the writer...

Although television — and Hollywood in general — has made great strides in recent years when it comes to depictions of female consent and sexual assault, it still seemed rare to see the same conversations being had on screen when it comes to male characters.
This television season feels different.
In the seventh episode of the fourth season of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Elisabeth Moss’ June — flush with power after seemingly vanquishing her enemy, Yvonne Strahovski’s Serena — awakens her sleeping husband (O-t Fagbenle’s Luke), mounts him and proceeds to have sex with him. After he tells her to wait, she holds down his hands and covers his mouth.
In Netflix’s “Bridgerton,” Phoebe Dynevor’s Daphne is desperate to procreate despite her husband, Simon’s (Regé-Jean Page), wishes and uses her just-gleaned rudimentary knowledge of conception to perform a similar sexual act. Afterward, Simon is so uncomfortable and traumatized...

For our recent webchat she continues, “my goal was that people not only feel like they have a new understanding of how complicated consent can be; but also how complicated it can emotionally be to be victimized in such a way. Writer-director Hannah Fidell had already made the acclaimed indie film A Teacher in 2013, but when the opportunity arose to expand the story as a television series and really bring out all its complexities, she jumped at the chance.
As she said during the FX series’ panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television awards-season event, the story of a teacher who embarks on an affair with her 17-year-old high school student is controversial, but she needed the audience to feel sympathetic to the central characters — at least in the early episodes of the 12-part half-hour limited series.

Exclusive: After getting great response from Television Academy members last Emmy season, Disney is returning to the Rose Bowl for a series of evenings promoting top contenders from its various brands including 20th Television, FX, Hulu, Nat Geo, Disney+ and ABC. Titled FYC From Your Car: Disney Drive-In Series, 11 different nights will be devoted to spotlighting the studio’s wares between May 25-June 16 with screenings, panels and dinner at each of them.
After hosting six of these evenings last season, Disney has gotten more ambitious in its presentation as at least five of the panels will be conducted live and in person as opposed to the virtual pre-recorded Q&a sessions more common to this type of drive-in FYC experience during the pandemic. With things loosening up Covid-wise in terms of quarantine restrictions, the studio appears to be more comfortable in expanding this second annual sojourn to the Rose Bowl.

This year’s Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress field at the Golden Globes is insanely crowded. Among the actresses in contention are past champs Cate Blanchett (“Mrs. America”), Nicole Kidman (“The Undoing”), Octavia Spencer (“Self Made”) and Reese Witherspoon (“Little Fires Everywhere”), past nominees Michelle Dockery (“Defending Jacob”) and Kerry Washington (“Little Fires Everywhere”), and up-and-comers Michaela Coel (“I May Destroy You”), Shira Haas (“Unorthodox”), Daisy Edgar-Jones (“Normal People”) and Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”). Amid this uber-stacked field, I urge you, dear Globe voter, not to forget about Kate Mara, who deserves her inaugural nom for her revelatory turn on FX/Hulu’s “A Teacher.”
