As Paramount+ works to build a roster of original programming that allows it to compete with the biggest names in streaming, it would likely love to have an international hit on the level of Netflix’s “Squid Game.” With any luck, that hit could come in the form of “Pyramid Game,” a new Korean drama hitting the streaming service this month that appears to combine the intense competition of “Squid Game” with high school teen drama.
Per the show’s official synopsis, Seong Su-ji is a new student at the Baekyeon Girls’ High School. Between the bullies, her studies, and the fight for popularity, high school already feels like a game of survival for Su-ji. International K-Drama Day: From The Glory 2 To Moving Top 10 Must-Watch Korean Shows Of 2023 ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Korean dramas have provided a safe and comforting space to the audience over the years. Contrary to popular belief, K-dramas are not just about cliched romantic comedies, though there is nothing wrong with that, but also teach us many life lessons along the way. If K-fanatics are to be believed, 2023 has proved to be one fruitful year, with many heartwarming shows providing a feeling of contentment this year.
While K-dramas have been around for quite some time now, it wasn’t until a few years ago that Netflix, Viki, Disney+ Hotstar, and Prime Videos, among other streaming spaces, began streaming Korean shows, opening up a new dimension for global viewers. In 2023, all of these Ott giants have done a commendable job of delivering some top-notch K-dramas that have managed to swoon every drama lover out there.

The new Korean drama The Killing Vote on Prime Video is a fascinating new thriller series that explores Korea’s idea of justice by using a vigilante that shares a question with the whole nation in order to take action on their behalf. The show stars Park Hae-Jin, Park Sung-Woong, and everyone’s new favorite, Lim Ji-Yeon (although she played a villain in her last). A lot happens in the first episode, as is common in the Hallyu world, and we can’t wait to see what happens next. The episode is extremely quick-paced, and it’s so great to see Ji-Yeon with this new fun and non-nonsense attitude in this drama. Let’s get straight into The Killing Vote.
Spoilers Ahead

Amazon-owned Prime Video has launched “The Killing Vote,” a hardboiled crime drama series from Korea.
The 12-part show uses the premise that a text message is sent to ordinary citizens who get to vote for or against the application of the death penalty in individual criminal cases. If more than 50% vote in favor, the criminal is killed by a mysterious character called Dog Mask.
That in turn creates difficult choices for police officers. They may have differing views on whether such rough justice is justified or not and are also tasked with tracking down Dog Mask.
The show stars Park Hae-jin as a detective character who is immediately caught in the dilemma, but with career advancement his priority, his position may be swayed over time.
Park Sung-woong portrays a legal scholar whose views are also ambiguous, but who turned himself in and finds himself in prison after killing the rapist who attacked his daughter.

There’s more to Korean TV than a greenlit second season of “Squid Game” and Ted Sarandos, Netflix co-ceo, shed new light on what’s making the “Korean wave” worthy of large-scale commitment.
After meeting with leading helmer Park Chan-wook (“Oldboy” and upcoming series “War and Revolt”) and 100 film students a day earlier, Sarandos on Wednesday held a public forum at Seoul’s Four Seasons Hotel on the future of Korean content. The abundant glad-handing follows a public commitment made in April to spend $2.5 billion on original Korean content over the next four years.
“[Korean content] is very often unpredictable and catches the American audience by surprise,” said Sarandos at the event. “I think what’s brilliant is to see film, unscripted and series all grow according to the interests of our Korean audience.”

Whether it’s overcoming a mental handicap or fighting for their rights, Korea’s women-led stories are evolving as the local industry kicks some of its dated stereotypes for female characters.
Recent shows “The Glory,” “Extraordinary Attorney Woo,” “Little Women” and “Twenty-Five, Twenty-One” not only delve into social issues in Korea, but highlight the strength and depth of character of their female leads.
Three of these were top-10 shows for Netflix in 2022, while data from FlixPatrol shows revenge thriller “The Glory” as the number one TV show on the streamer this year in South Korea, as of Feb. 24.
While Korea’s rigidly hierarchical society and history has traditionally put women at the bottom of society, that same rigidity moulded strong, creative women who overcame hardship and prejudice. Finally, these traits are being reflected in content hitting the small screen.
