The pandemic, although disastrous for most parts of the economy, had one minor upside: a boost in online viewing. The number of subscribers of Portugal’s VOD platform Filmin, for example, has tripled compared with last year, due in part to the lockdown. “We grew as much in three months as we forecast for two years,” Filmin Portugal manager Anette Dujisin told Variety. Classic films have played a major part in driving that growth.
Despite challenges with local classics, Filmin is seeing growing success with heritage films and catalog titles as well as new releases. Filmin has received constant requests from subscribers – even loud demands from some – for more classic films since the service went online in 2016, Dujisin said.
The feedback affirms “that a VOD platform dedicated to independent cinema is not complete without a certain body of classical films,” Dujisin said. “So since the beginning we have been making...

This year’s edition of Fest inaugurated the Director’s Hub, a two-day event homing in on a range of issues relating to film directing, through discussions and case studies. “The Portuguese New Wave” proved to be a key part of this year’s Director’s Hub, which unspooled at Fest (24 June-1 July). This discussion gathered six directors from the two most recent generations of Portuguese filmmakers in order to discuss what is happening in the Portuguese film scene: what it is that defines them collectively, but most importantly, the issues that they face and that need to be tackled – be it by them, by the government or by the audience. The panel consisted of André Gil Mata, director of The Tree, Bernardo Lopes, director of Ivan, Duarte Coimbra, director of Amor, Avenidas Novas, Miguel Gonçalves Mendes, director of José and Pilar, Pedro Cabeleira, director of Damned Summer, and Pedro Pinho,...
On May 14, Acid Trip #2, an initiative of the Association for Independent Film Distribution, is dedicated to Portuguese cinema. It will screen three films selected by the Portuguese Directors’ Association (Apr) – Pedro Cabeleira’s “Damned Summer”, Teresa Villaverde’s “Colo” and Leonor Teles’ “Terra Franca.”
The Apr’s note accompanying the selection stated that Portugal’s cinema is “persistent and resilient, and despite production difficulties, it invents its own conditions to continue to exist and create.”
Portuguese films in at Cannes this year include Un Certain Regard-player “The Dead and the Others” by João Salaviza and Renée Nader Messora, acquired for sales by Paris-based Luxbox; Carlos Diegues’ “The Great Mystical Circus”, sold by Latido Films; soccer-themed “Diamantino”, by Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt, which could be a break out in Critics’ Week; and short film “Amor, Avenidas Novas”, by Duarte Coimbra, again playing in Critics’ Week; and Terry Gilliam’s closing pic,...

Damned SummerL.A.’s cinematic landscape finally feels boundless with the addition of Locarno in Los Angeles, now in their second year. For its second edition, beginning Thursday at the Downtown Independent, the festival—curated by Acropolis Cinema founder Jordan Cronk and co-artistic director Robert Koehler—is focusing on award-winning films from Switzerland’s 70th Locarno Festival. The program includes opening night selection Ilian Metev’s 3/4 (Filmmakers of the Present Golden Leopard), Nelson Carlo De Los Santos Arias’ Cocote (Signs of Life Award), and Wang Bing’s Mrs. Fang (International Competition Golden Leopard). Locarno in L.A. includes 14 nonfiction and narrative films and 5 shorts, including this year’s centerpiece film, Ben Russell’s Good Luck. Shot on 16mm film, the documentary follows two mining communities: one, a government-owned copper mine in Bor, Serbia, operating 400m underground where dank darkness pervades. At the other, in the Brokopondo district of Suriname, laborers...

Update: Audience award winner revealed; Good Manners, Winter Brothers also among winners.
Documentary filmmaker Wang Bing became the fifth director from China in Locarno’s seven-decade history to win the top honour of the Golden Leopard at this year’s edition.
Mrs. Fang, which is the first documentray ever to win the festival’s top prize, follows the last days of a 67-year-old Alzheimer’s patient in southern China.
Previous Golden Leopard winners from China were Hongqui Li with Winter Vacation in 2010 and Xiaolu Guo with She, a Chinese a year before, as well as Shuo Wang with Father in 2000 and Yue Lü with Mr Zhao in 1998.
The decision by the international competition jury, headed by director Olivier Assayas, reflects a trend at international festivals of recent years for documentaries beating out competition from fiction productions.

Favorite Moments from Locarno Festival 2017: Astrologic/Catastrophic, Wild Cowboys, Endless Partying
This year at the Locarno Festival I am looking for specific images, moments, techniques, qualities or scenes from films across the 70th edition's selection that grabbed me and have lingered past and beyond the next movie seen, whose characters, story and images have already begun to overwrite those that came just before.***The astrologic and the catastrophic in Gürcan Keltek’s Meteors (Filmmakers of the Present). Like Patricio Guzmán’s Nostalgia for the Light, this poetic documentary finds deeply painful but also awesome connection between cosmic phenomenon and a nation’s internal bloodshed: the occurrence in 2015 of a meteor shower over Turkey at a time of martial law and violent repression of the Kurds. In beautifully grainy video, the luminous streaks across the night sky rhyme with and contrast against the gunfire and smoke of the government action. Cell phones record the bullet scars on the buildings, virtual evidence of material tragedy,...
