Comprising international premieres, short programs, and some of the country’s finest-ever films in new restorations, 2024’s Japan Cuts––running July 10-21 at New York’s Japan Society––has been unveiled. It’s in the festival’s nature that numerous works and directors are lesser-known on American shores, though a cursory search has one regularly stopping: new films by Takeshi Kitano (Kubi), Shunji Iwai (Kyrie), Shinya Tsukamoto (Shadow of Fire), and Gakuryu Ishii (The Box Man) populate the selection. Meanwhile, Hideaki Anno’s modern classic Shin Godzilla debuts in a new, black-and-white cut Shin Godzilla: ORTHOchromatic.
Its classics section is three-for-three: Ishii’s August in the Water, Shinji Somai’s Moving, and Toshiharu Ikeda Mermaid Legend, which is more or less one of the greatest films ever made. One can anticipate at least a couple of Japan Cuts’ current unknowns are tomorrow’s figureheads.

In the wake of Hayao Miyazaki’s latest Oscar win for “The Boy and the Heron” and the VOD dominance of “Godzilla Minus One,” Japanese cinema continues to be as vital as ever to American audiences. That should make the upcoming edition of Japan Cuts, the annual film festival celebrating Japanese cinema co-produced by Japan Society, one of the most exciting events on New York cinephiles’ summer calendars.
The lineup, which IndieWire can exclusively reveal, contains a mix of American and New York premieres alongside a curated selection of newly restored classics. Notable titles include “Shin Godzilla: ORTHOchromatic,” a new black-and-white version of Hideaki Anno’s 2016 kaiju blockbuster; and “Shadow of Fire,” the war drama from “Tetsuo: The Iron Man” director Shinya Tsukamoto that premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever finally brought Namor the Submariner into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the character underwent some significant changes, with Atlantis swapped out for Talokan and his origin story rooted in Mayan legend.
While not everyone was happy about that, it went a long way in helping to differentiate Namor from DC's Aquaman.
Thanks to Marvel Studios concept artist Phil Saunders (who has spent the past year working on Disney's Tron: Ares), we have a new look at some sequences which didn't make it into the Black Panther sequel's final cut.
That includes a clash between Ironheart and Namora. "The script originally called for an extended battle between [Riri Williams] and [Namora] that would have taken them underwater," Saunders says. "It was inevitably cut to keep the focus on [Shuri] and [Namor], but gave me the opportunity to paint some dynamic shots."

As Marvel fans eagerly await the next installment in the Black Panther franchise, the legacy of T’Challa, as portrayed by the late Chadwick Boseman, continues to resonate with audiences. One scene in particular, from Captain America: Civil War, highlights T’Challa’s skills and competence as the Black Panther, leaving fans with chills and a desire to see him back in action.
Naturally, that raises the question: who should turn into the next Black Panther?
Is it T’Challa’s ex-lover and accomplished Wakandan spy, Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o)? Maybe it was T’Challa’s closest confidant, Okoye (Danai Gurira). Well, it seems the sister of T’Challa, Princess Shuri (Letitia Wright), is the only truly apparent contender for the throne, for now.

Black Panther is a popular character who has made multiple appearances in some of Marvel’s greatest projects, be it Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Iron Man: Armoured Adventures, or even the upcoming video game Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra.

Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler has always said that he'd be more than happy to stay on board the franchise and return to helm a third film, and a new rumor is now claiming that he's signed on to do just that.
However, Marvel Studios might be eyeing the filmmaker for another upcoming MCU project!
According to MyTimeToShineHello, the studio wants Coogler to take the helm of the planned X-Men reboot. This follows a previous rumor that a Poc was being sought for the project, and we have heard that Mufasa: The Lion King director Barry Jenkins may also be on Marvel's radar.

Fans were curious about what was in store for the Winter Soldier when Sebastian Stan’s character, Bucky Barnes, was prominently absent from the recent announcement of Julius Onah’s Captain America 4. However, a new theory suggests that his absence from the upcoming flick may allow Bucky Barnes to fully embrace his Wakandan superhero identity.
Despite the disappointment that Bucky was left out of Captain America: Brave New World, the decision actually makes sense. Well, Captain America 4 perfectly justifies his absence, as he moves from a supporting role to a more significant one (White Wolf) in Thunderbolts.
Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes
Bucky Barnes has spent more than a decade in the MCU, but aside from becoming the Winter Soldier and ultimately breaking free from Hydra’s hold, he has not undergone much growth.

Skydance and Marvel Games announced the game back in 2021 (via Deadline) and officially teased in 2022 (via Game Informer). With the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the world saw the film saying farewell to Chadwick Boseman with honor and love for his legacy, portraying the titular superhero in the MCU.
With his tragic and sudden passing before the production of the aforementioned film began, Marvel Studios had to come up with a different story to explain the absence of the protagonist from the project.
Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther in a still from Avengers: Infinity War
This was the main reason why the original plan that filmmaker Ryan Coogler had for this film could not come to fruition as an alternate narrative was formulated for it. But when it comes to it, the director revealed that his initial vision for the project might’ve been just as impactful considering we would’ve seen T’challa in grief in front of our eyes for the time he lost during The Blip.

The Original Avengers assembled to fight Loki’s invasion of New York and became the most iconic team of the MCU. The team was balanced, had some precedent in the comics, and served as the premiere IP for the franchise for at least a decade. However, the team found itself disassembled in the wake of Avengers: Endgame, with only three members still active, but not united.

With Jonathan Majors’ Kang out of the MCU’s scheme of things after his conviction last year, fans have been speculating who might be the perfect foe to replace the Conqueror in the multiversal saga. And while many have pointed to Doctor Doom as the perfect substitution following the scale of the upcoming Avengers, the MCU might already have the ideal solution to this situation.
Considering we are already halfway through the multiversal saga, setting up Doctor Doom in the limited time for the upcoming Avengers flicks isn’t going to be easy if the MCU goes that route. However, bringing back one Avengers foe from the past could work in the MCU’s favor, as he could effortlessly fill Kang’s shoes in the upcoming multiversal battle in Avengers 5 or 6.

As one of the few (I don't want to say one of the last) Japanese filmmakers who can still produce movies with tension, pointed comments and a no-punches-pulled cinematic approach, every new movie Shinya Tsukamoto comes up with is a must-watch. In “Shadow of Fire”, he continues his anti-war message that also appeared in “Fires on the Plain” and “Killing”, this time focusing on the chaos that ensued in Japan just after the ending of World War 2.

Shinya Tsukamoto’s Shadow of Fire begins as a troubling but measured film, but about a half-hour in something happens that shatters its quietude. Suddenly, a man who to this point has been impotent and deferential throws a small boy out a window and begins beating a woman. From the director best-known for Tetsuo: The Iron Man, and whose other films are often similarly stylish and sexually violent, that might not sound like much, but it is precisely the restraint of Shadow of Fire that makes the violence one of the more harrowing moments in Tsukamoto’s growing oeuvre.
Tsukamoto used to make movies at a swift pace: from his 1989 debut Tetsuo to 2011’s Kotoko, a dozen films. Since then, Shadow of Fire is just his third, all three of which are focused in some way on war, and each has taken longer to arrive than the one before. Whether...

He won hearts as Prince T’Challa, aka Black Panther, but if things had gone differently at Marvel Studios, he would have ended up in one of the Guardians of the Galaxy characters’ roles.
We saw Chadwick as Black Panther for the first time in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. He got his solo film in 2018, which was both commercially and critically successful. The film even won three Oscars. He was all set to return in the 2022 sequel but unfortunately passed away in 2020. He played a vital role in Avengers: Infinity War, but his character got blipped by Thanos’ snap at the end, and he returned...

Heavy spoilers for "The Marvels" follow.
"Avengers: Endgame" remains a monumental blockbuster, one that marked the end of Marvel as we knew it and should have marked a nice and long break for the franchise.
Since "Endgame," the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been in a bit of disarray. There's no unifying plot, nor a lot that connects the movies or characters. This makes it easier for the MCU to simply ignore and forget about every single world-changing event in the new movies and shows the moment credits roll.
Sure, this is supposed to be a saga about the multiverse, a concept explored in a few of the movies and shows of Phases 4 and 5. But that hasn't unified the titles thematically — until now. With "The Marvels," it becomes clear that the MCU is united by a common theme post "Endgame "and that's the idea that you cannot save everyone. It is...

When "Avengers: Endgame" arrived in theaters, there was plenty of praise from Marvel Cinematic Universe fans around the world, but there was one celebrated moment that wasn't quite the home run it should have been. In the film's final battle, all of the (surviving) female characters from across the history of the MCU suddenly come together to help Captain Marvel accompany the Infinity Gauntlet and all the Infinity Stones into the Quantum Realm portal that has just been activated in the wrecked van Scott Lang has been driving around after being stuck in the atomic world for five years.
Aside from the fact that Captain Marvel immediately proves after this moment that she doesn't really need anyone else's help to deal with Thanos, this felt like a contrived feminist tribute to acknowledge Marvel's mishandling of female characters over the years.

Emilia Clarke is dismissing claims from others, including a fellow actor, who said people who act in front of a greenscreen aren’t really acting.
During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, published online Wednesday, the actress, who has been in several projects that have had castmembers interact with a greenscreen, including Secret Invasion and Game of Thrones, gave her take on the misconception.
“The stigma is that people don’t do any acting in these shows,” Clarke said. “And then you’re like, ‘Well, then why are they asking all these great actors to do it, and why are they saying yes?’”
The actress’ rationale was that if it isn’t “real” acting, then top actors, such as her Secret Invasion co-stars Samuel L. Jackson and Olivia Colman, wouldn’t take on roles in projects that use greenscreens.
“The cast is ridiculous,” she added of her fellow castmembers in the Marvel series.

Emilia Clarke told the Los Angeles Times that she disagrees with people who claim that acting in front of a green screen isn’t “real” acting. Clarke’s onscreen career has spanned several big franchises, from “Game of Thrones” to “Star Wars” to “The Terminator,” and now the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Disney+ series “Secret Invasion,” many of which required her to interact with green screens.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been in a chaotic state since “Avengers: Endgame” cleared out a huge number of its heaviest hitters. Since then, thanks in part to Covid, the MCU hasn’t coalesced as clearly as the retroactively named “Infinity Saga.” So if you’re here, it’s probably because you’re wondering the same thing we are — who are the current most powerful characters?
That’s a big question but one we’re happy to answer, definitively. Is it Doctor Strange? Thor? Kang the Conqueror? Wanda? Read on to find out for yourself. But note: All answers are final… at least until more movies come out.
Of course, the MCU’s backstory stretches back billions of years and even ignoring the blip, that includes an awful lot of dead bodies. To keep things as manageable as possible, we’re limiting this count to characters who are currently alive,...

Whenever a person of color appears in a Disney project, like the new live-action iteration of “The Little Mermaid,” the racial vitriol automatically comes with the territory. Even in an age where we watched Meghan Markle become a literal Princess and a member of the royal family with our own two eyes, the heated conversation around race rages onward.
Whether it’s an album cover, film or TikTok dance, the racism, misogyny, and obsessive comments over what Black people can and can not become is exhausting and unnecessary. We live in a multicultural world where stories are no longer seen through a monolithic lens. With Disney features alone this issue has become even more pronounced. Remember when Brandy was Cinderella in 1997? Or when Princess Tiana hit the scene in “The Princess and the Frog” in 2009?
This predictable racism escalated even further when plans to produce a live-action version of “The...

Coupling is difficult and relationships are difficult. That would be the basic premise of pretty much any romantic comedy or drama ever. Santa Yamagishi's second feature “To the Supreme!”, based on a stage play by Shuko Nemoto, is not different in that department, as we get to see four couples or almost couples struggling with their love life on almost day-to-day basis in two different timelines.

Ruth Carter doesn’t need the prefix “costume designer” in front of her name; she is a household name. Carter made Oscar history when she became the first Black woman ever to win two Oscars, thanks to her work on the “Black Panther” films.
With credits that include “Selma,” “Malcolm X,” “Coming 2 America” and being Spike Lee’s go-to, Carter has stories to tell. In her new book, “The Art of Ruth E. Carter,” she shares those stories. The book covers three decades of work and some of her 72 credits.
Carter spoke with Variety about the book, her first time working in TV and on the “Seinfeld” pilot, as well as the most expensive costume she ever worked on.
We’ve been talking about the book for a while, how does it feel to have it out now?

It's not just Tim Burton's "Batman" getting in on the Lego superhero fun this year. A new batch of Marvel Lego sets are on the way that will let fans rebuild the events from two big screen blockbuster finales in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Reaching back into the end of The Infinity Saga, a new Lego set creates a diorama recreating part of the final battle between Thanos and some of The Avengers. In fact, this set basically allows for the recreation of Marvel's not-so-subtle female superhero empowerment moment where all the lady superheroes of the MCU march towards Thanos. But it also includes the most important character in the entirety of the MCU, and trust me when I say you won't guess who it is.

Legacy has been part of superhero storytelling, almost from the beginning. When one character can no longer maintain their super-moniker, they pass it on to another, creating a chain of heroes with different takes on the same identity. Traditionally, legacy heroes have been more of a DC Comics thing than a Marvel thing, resulting in more Flashes than Thors. But with its ever-expanding live-action universe, the MCU is embracing the legacy concept as new actors take on established names.
We’ve already seen glimpses of this with Jane Foster becoming Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder and Shuri stepping in as Black Panther after the death of her brother T’Challa, as well as potential legacy characters with Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye and Yelena Belova’s White Widow.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments and the post-credits scenes in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” currently playing in theaters.
By this point, it’s no secret that Marvel Studios has lost some of its luster in its post-“Avengers: Endgame” era. Between the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s rapid expansion on Disney+ and the exits of stars like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and the late Chadwick Boseman, the Marvel saga has often felt at once too much and not enough: Sprawl without a center.
It’s a problem that “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is particularly ill-equipped to address. For one, the film is wholly disconnected from everything else that’s happened in the Marvel Cinematic Universe post-“Endgame” — there’s not a whisper of Kang or the multiverse or incursions or Talokan or, hilariously, Thor, even though the Guardians made a special...

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament took a hiatus during the pandemic as movie theaters closed for the majority of 2020-2021 and theatrical day-and-date titles on both the big screen and studios’ respective streaming platforms became more prevalent. Coming back from that brink, the studios have largely returned to their theatrical release models and the downstream monies they can bring. Not to mention their power in launching IPs around the world with big global marketing campaigns. When it comes to evaluating the financial performance of top movies, it isn’t about what a film grosses at the box office. The true tale is told when production budgets, P&a, talent participations and other costs collide with box office grosses, and ancillary revenues from VOD to DVD and TV. To get close to that mysterious end of the equation, Deadline is repeating our Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2022, using data culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

A weird thing happened to me at the start of March. After weeks of grinding the Ccg Marvel Snap, I had finally climbed the ranks during the game’s ‘Into the Quantum Realm’ season. Previous seasons had seen me hit rank 50 or 60 at best, but as I crested 90 I realized that this was my moment. I was going to smash 100. The ‘Infinite’ rank.
I got there because a Snap Collector’s Cache had randomly spat out Series 4 golden girl Shuri, a rare card with a 58.2% win rate. With Shuri in your deck, you can double the power of the next card you play. That means a 30-power Red Skull followed by a 30-power Taskmaster. It means a 16-power Black Panther that Armin Zola can destroy and copy twice to create two 32-power Black Panthers. Actors lie about their involvement in big superhero movies all the time ... just ask Andrew Garfield. The man lied to the Internet for two long years, and successfully dodged any questions that could get him into trouble with the executives at Marvel, making sure his return as Spider-Man in the 2022 film "Spider-Man: No Way Home" would remain a secret. The lying never ends for anybody. It was the same tedious process for actor Michael B. Jordan, who had to keep his super secret role in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" hidden from everyone — including his family and friends.

History made: the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star is the first actor ever to be nominated for a Marvel film
The first Black Panther was a huge hit. What about its impact were you especially proud of?
It was a beautiful thing to see the outpouring of pride, of representation, of being seen. And to see audiences show up in a way that you never see at movies, dressed as kings and queens! There was such enthusiasm over that movie. It was like water in a desert.
What do you love most about playing Queen Ramonda?
Caring for people is at her core. And as T’Challa and Shuri’s mother, she is that mothering instinct, that glue that holds the family together. That strength, that grace, that shoulder to lean on. And in this film, she's been carrying not only for herself and her daughter, but for her people.

Today, that vision is now a reality thanks to Brie Larsen, Elizabeth Olsen, the women of Wakanda and Zoë Saldaña, whose leadership was ‘Mpowering.’”
Saldaña is featured in episode four and serves as an Executive Producer of the series alongside Cisely and Mariel Saldana for Cinestar Pictures. “‘MPower’ is a tribute to women’s representation and empowerment,” she said. “We’re enthused to have the involvement of a diverse group of women whose voices and stories will serve as a source of inspiration.

It’s time to slime!
The 2023 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards are back and better than ever. Hosted by Nate Burleson, co-host of “CBS Mornings” and CBS Sports analyst, and digital superstar Charli D’Amelio, the wackiest awards show of them packed on the star power, and of course, the slime.
For the first time ever, the KCAs took place live from the Microsoft Theater — simulcast across Nickelodeon, TeenNick, Nicktoons, the Nick Jr. channel, TVLand, CMT and MTV2 — celebrating fan-favourite stars from television, movies, sports, music and more. This year’s show also featured extreme logic-defying stunts, wild celebrity collaborations and games, magical illusions and tricks, interactive moments within the Nickverse and epic slimings.
