Bollywood A-list star Rani Mukerji was in refreshingly candid form at Mumbai’s Ficci Frames media industry conference, proffering frank opinions on the Indian theatrical business.
The usual Hindi-language domination of the all-India box office was reversed for a period in 2021-22, when films from the south of India, including “Rrr,” “Kantara,” “Ponniyin Selvan” and “Vikram” dominated, and the northern counterparts from’ Bollywood’ struggled to become hits. Since then, the north-south competition has evolved again.
In 2023, there were only three south Indian films in the box office top 10, “Salaar,” “Jailer” and “Leo,” at numbers four, six and seven, respectively. However, Hindi-language films made by south Indian filmmakers – “Jawan” in pole position and “Animal” in third – performed exceedingly well.
“They listen to what the audiences want,” Mukerji said. “When cinema is evolving and everybody’s trying to cater to a diverse audience, sometimes you lose touch with the popular or the...

Still, they made an impact strong and cemented their position in the audience’s hearts as well. These performances need all the applause irrespective of whether the films they were a part of were commercially taken off or tanked.

Rani Mukerji is known for her brilliant performances in a range of genres and especially for her complete immersion into her characters. Her newest film, Mrs. Chatterjee Vs. Norway, showcases her talent in an intense, moving, and powerful role.
A heart-wrenching drama, Mrs. Chatterjee Vs. Norway is the journey of a woman’s resolve to fight against all odds and take on a country to protect her children taken away without cause. For two long years to get her children back home, she fiercely battles Norway foster care officials and teachers with no understanding of the cultural differences, unfair court rulings, and betrayal everywhere. Actress Rani Mukerji spoke candidly about why the film ‘Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway’ speaks to her.
Rani in an exclusive BTS clip shared with IMDb, said: “The film resonates with one emotion which is the mother’s emotion. This movie is a reminder to all children in the world that there’s no greater emotion or relationship than with a mother. As a mother, I couldn’t place myself in Sagarika’s shoes because it is a painful thought to be separated from your child.
She added: “I can’t even imagine it. Animals too have a natural instinct with their children that if someone tries to take their children away, the mother will straightaway attack. It is the same with human mothers as well. If you try to do something with their child, they will not spare you.
“You forget to say thank you to your mothers and take them for granted.

Adaptation
The story is based on real life case with Sagarika Bhattacharya who was living with her husband Anup Bhattacharya with two children. They moved to Norway for a job. In 2011, their children were taken away by Barnevernet (also known as Norwegian Child Welfare Services) on ground of improper treatment of children. First, they appealed in a Norwegian court but failed. Later they appealed Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India to intervene. Before this Sagarika got separated from her husband and custody of the children were given to their father’s brother. In 2013, after she fought a two year long legal battle,...

Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway
Directed by Ashima Chibber
Why wait for the end of the year? Just give all the awards to Rani Mukerji for her sinewy performance as a hyper Bengali mother battling the government of Norway for the right to her own children.
There! I said it. Sounds so ridiculous: a mother being deprived for the right to her own children. But it all happened , and not so long ago when Sagarika Bhattacharya and her husband’s kids were taken away.
This is what happens when eager NRIs don’t read the fine print before migrating. Rani Mukerji, here rechristened Debika Chatterjee, fights tooth and nail to get back her children. Not much support from her stiff-lipped husband (Anirban Bhattacharya) . In the process of battling bureaucracy almost singlehandedly Debika encounters all sorts of conspiracies and schemers.

For crying out loud! These characters are Loud, man! Really really loud. Everyone talks at the top of their lungs and, quite often, at the same time. So we end up listening to more conversation, topped with aggressive background music, than our ears could normally accommodate.
Welcome to the world of a big fat North Indian wedding. Anything can happen here. So be warned. Anyone can say anything and get away with it.
Somehow Indian weddings give a licence.
