In the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," entitled "Caves," Lieutenant Boimler (Jack Quaid) finds himself trapped in an alien cave with his three best friends, unable to escape. While there is reason to panic -- they are surrounded by seemingly carnivorous moss -- none of them are thrown into a panic. Luckily, being trapped in a cave is a common occurrence on "Star Trek," and something even low-ranking Starfleet officers are familiar with. As Boimler and his friends attempt to escape, they while away the time by reminiscing about their previous cave missions gone awry.
Boimler tells a story of when he was trapped in a cave with Lieutenant Levy, a genius mathematician who likes to expound on bizarro conspiracy theories. As soon as Levy and Boimler are alone, the former begins blithering about the evil plots put into the galaxy by a species called the Vendorians, a...

The second-season "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "wej Duj" had a high concept. Rather than merely follow the usual lower-ranking officers on board the U.S.S. Cerritos, it split its time three ways, looking at ensigns on the Cerritos, on the Klingon ship the Iks Che'Ta', and on the Vulcan ship, the Sh'val. The Vulcan ensign (or the Vulcan military's equivalent) was T'Lyn (Gabrielle Ruiz), an officer considered by her superiors to be feisty and emotional. The joke of "wej Duj," of course, is that T'Lyn is just as stone-faced and stoic as her Vulcan counterparts, she merely reacts to crises using instinct sometimes, rather than logic all of the time.
Fast-forward to the current fourth season of "Lower Decks," and T'Lyn is now serving on board the Cerritos as a provisional officer. She now spends most of her time with Lieutenants Marianer (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Rutherford...

For many years, death in "Star Trek" was a permanent event. To cite a notable example: when Captain Kirk's brother Sam (William Shatner) was killed in the episode "Operation -- Annihilate!", he was dead forever. There wasn't a storyline later in the series wherein Sam was cloned or resurrected somehow.
In 2023, the tune on death has changed, and multiple characters have now died and returned. Naturally, "Star Trek III: The Seach for Spock" surrounded the resurrection of the title character (Leonard Nimoy). Every Trekkie can tell you the saga of the death of Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) and her subsequent return in the form of her half-Romulan daughter Sela.
Neelix (Ethan Phillips) was killed and brought back via Borg technology in the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Mortal Coil," and Dr. Culber (Wilson Cruz) was salvaged from a mushroom dimension. More recently, In "Star Trek: Picard," Data (Brent Spiner), who...

This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
"Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4, episode 4, titled "Something Borrowed, Something Green," takes place largely on the Orion homeworld, the place where Lieutenant D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) hails from. She is there to attend the wedding of her sister D'Erica but also to face the familial legacy she deliberately left behind when she joined Starfleet. The episode features a lot of lingering sororal resentment and multiple mysterious, violent, sexy figures from Tendi's past.
More important to Trekkies, however, are the numerous details about Orion life. "Something Borrowed" is the first time we've really had a good look at the Orions and what they're like in their element.
Orions, of course, first appeared on "Star Trek" as early as the "Original Series" pilot, "The Cage," when Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) was seduced by a green-skinned woman at a Roman-style orgy.

To save the day and ensure a special celebration, Team Spidey teams up with The Thing to retrieve the missing bees and rescue Rosh Hashanah.

This post contains spoilers for the premiere of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4.
At the beginning of the fourth season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," the four main characters Boimler (Jack Quaid), Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Tendi (Noël Wells), and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) are each promoted from the lowly rank of ensign to the only slightly-less-lowly rank of lieutenant junior grade. They still don't have much clout on the U.S.S. Cerritos, but at least now they no longer have to sleep in a hallway. One can see their promotions right away as, on their collars, they wear one solid pip and one empty pip. That, any Trekkie will instantly tell you, is the configuration for a lieutenant junior grade.
It should be noted that "Star Trek" has, since its inception, used extant naval ranks to designate Starfleet officers. Just like in the real United States Navy, officers start at the rank of ensign,...

Team Spidey of “Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends” is collaborating with the Fantastic Four’s very own The Thing — also known as Ben Grimm — in a special Rosh Hashanah-themed episode which is set to premiere on Disney on Sept. 15.
For this holiday episode The Thing, who was created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, teams up with the kid-centric characters Miles Morales and Peter Parker to both save and celebrate this year’s Rosh Hashanah.
In the episode, Gobby (aka the Green Goblin) steals all of the bees, threatening the Rosh Hashanah tradition of celebrating the Jewish new year with apples and honey. In Variety’s exclusive clip, The Thing can be seen rejoicing with Team Spidey after they were able to stop Gobby from stealing all the honey in a beautiful moment of love and celebration.
“An UnBEElievable Rosh Hashanah” will premiere on Friday, Sept. 15 at 8:30 a.

When Star Trek: Lower Decks premiered in the summer of 2020 — so long ago that its streaming home at the time was called CBS All Access, rather than Paramount+ — it seemed caught between two potentially incompatible goals. On the one hand, the animated series, run by Mike McMahan, wanted to satirize all of the most ridiculous ideas the Star Trek franchise had introduced since the mid-20th century. And on the other, it wanted to tell genuine, thrilling Star Trek stories, set a decade or so after the events of the various Nineties spinoffs.

This post contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4.
When the Lower Deckers returned this week for "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4, a few things about our favorite underdog crew looked different. For starters, they're not actually Lower Deckers anymore -- Tendi (Noel Wells), Mariner (Tawny Newsome), and Boimler (Jack Quaid) all receive promotions to lower-tier mid-level officer positions in the premiere, with Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) soon following. But there's also a change to the main crew's roster, as Vulcan T'Lyn (Gabrielle Ruiz) appears alongside the main cast -- with little explanation for folks who might not remember her.
In the premiere episode, T'Lyn is clearly already part of the Lower Decks team, but she's still finding her footing within the tight-knit group and they're still adapting to hanging out with an extra-blunt Vulcan. In her re-introductory scene, Tendi hypes up their hydrogen sample project with signature cheer while...

This post contains spoilers for the season finale of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
Another season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" has come and gone, leaving fans with another batch of high-energy episodes that further showed the adventures of the USS Cerritos and its quirky crew of misfits. Perhaps more than in any other season thus far, our favorite Beta Shift crew members were put through the wringer throughout season 3 -- especially in the last few episodes.
With Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) kicked off the starship for her suspected disparaging remarks to a journalist that tanked the reputation of the Starfleet vessel and its crew, our tightknit lower deckers have been left to flounder without their unofficial leader. The finale taps into this tension by heightening the stakes even further, adding the threat of obsolescence for all California-class ships through Vice Admiral Buenamigo's (Carlos Alazraqui) AI-operated Texas-class prototype and tying...

A review of “The Unknown,” this week’s Better Things, coming up just as soon as I show you a copy of the Fiddler on the Roof cast album…
For Season Three, Better Things dropped its original opening credits sequence scored to John Lennon’s “Mother,” opting for a shorter one where the song frequently changes. Despite constantly dragging up the Nielsen ratings' rear, The CW has refrained from cancelling its Crazy Ex-Girlfriend TV show. They even gave it a fourth and final season to complete the story. Now, since it is ending, we don't have to spend the season wondering if Crazy Ex-Girlfriend will be cancelled or renewed for season five. Still, we're keeping an eye on the ratings, because it helps us figure out the cancellation/renewal chances of other CW TV series. So will Crazy Ex-Girlfriend go out with a whimper or a bang? Stay tuned.

Despite cast changes and low ratings, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend stuck to its four-year plan and ended on its own terms.
This feature contains spoilers for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, up to but not including the series finale.
As geek TV goes, the CW has a pretty great track record for letting shows run. Outside of their comic book shows, they're the network that gave Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna the space to tell the whole story of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend over a full four seasons, as planned, in spite of being (as bluntly as co-creator Bloom once put it) “the lowest-rated show on network television.”
Originally developed for Showtime, the series was by no means a dud, garnering awards nominations, rave reviews, and devoted fans throughout its run. But network television isn't always the most hospitable place for shows like these and a big part of its appeal, now that...

It’s the last season before the cast of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend takes its final bow. The cast and creators of the musical comedy took the stage at PaleyFest to reflect on everything from the spark that lit the fire for the show to saying goodbye to the popular CW series — and talked about a possible musical stage show based on the series.

While four seasons of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” have explored musical genres from boy bands to country, the one type of music series co-creator and star Rachel Bloom admits the show will not explore before the end is Rebecca’s own style.
“Basically the idea is that part of the music in her mind is her looking inside with all of these perceived narratives so I don’t know how her music sounds,” Bloom told Variety at the show’s Paleyfest event Wednesday. “Really there’s another show in, what is her sound? I don’t know what Rebecca’s sound is. She’s not Rachel Bloom — she’s not doing comedy. It’s a beautiful mystery.”
The CW series will come to an end April 5 with a two-hour block that consists of its narrative finale episode followed by a concert special that was taped live from Los Angeles, Calif. in mid-March.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” Season 4, Episode 8, “I’m Not The Person I Used To Be.”]
On Friday’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) can’t recognize her alcoholic ex-boyfriend Greg (Santino Fontana) when he shows up at his high school reunion party after two years away. That’s because “Pitch Perfect” star Skylar Astin, not Fontana, now plays Greg.

With Becky in “Roseanne,” Aunt Viv in “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” or Darren in “Bewitched,” recasting a role isn’t usually acknowledged on the show, although the audience can’t help but be aware of the change. However, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” did the opposite...
