Plot: In the wake of an environmental collapse that is forcing humanity to shed 20% of its population, a family dinner erupts into chaos when a father’s plan to enlist in the government’s new euthanasia program goes horribly awry.
Review: The modern era consists of a lot of uncertainty. Whether it’s climate change or nuclear war, there’s no telling what the landscape of our future will be. And I love it when filmmakers provide a glance at those dystopic futures. Hopefully, they serve as a message of what not to do and provide a window into a future we want to avoid. Humane takes the ever-present crisis of climate change and combines it with a fascist government hellbent on a solution. Marking her directorial debut, Caitlin Cronenberg continues her family’s pursuit of thought-provoking cinema with an intense journey through family pain.

Ryan Hawke, Ethan Hawke, and Mickey Schiff will exec produce for Under the Influence, alongside Dylan Russell, with Maria Breese-McLain, Bill Way and Elliott Whitton producing.

Exclusive: Tyriq Withers is set to star alongside Marlon Wayans in Monkeypaw’s Goat for Universal with Justin Tipping.
The project, based on a Black List script by Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie, centers on a promising young athlete who is invited to train with a team’s retiring star.
The film will be produced by Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, Ian Cooper and Jamal Watson. Executive producers are David Kern and Kate Oh. EVP Production Development Sara Scott and Director of Development Tony Ducret will oversee the project for Universal.
While execs always had their eyes on Wayans for the retiring star, Monkeypaw and Uni met with a number of up-and-comers for the younger star, with Withers rising to the top of the list.
Best known for his role in the FX series Atlanta, Withers is currently in production on the Ace Entertainment feature Family Secrets opposite Eric Dane and Maia Mitchell.

Exclusive: In one of the first big spec sales following the resolution of the WGA strike, Ben Ketai’s script Undying has sold to Netflix for development under its first-look feature deal with Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps.
Deadline hears that the deal was for mid-six against seven figures. 21 Laps brought the project in to Netflix, and Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine are set to produce for the company, with Moera Ainai overseeing. Ketai will serve as executive producer.
Netflix declined comment.
Described as an erotic thriller with a supernatural twist, Undying follows a woman, suffocated by motherhood, who has an affair with a man she hasn’t seen since high school… only to discover a terrifying secret.
Prior to the sale, Ketai had most recently wrote and directed River Wild, a reimagining of Uni’s same-name 1994 thriller. Starring Leighton Meester, Taran Killam and Adam Brody, the film spent a...

The news Thursday about Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman Donna Langley’s ascent to bring TV content under her domain doesn’t just speak to the greater NBCUniversal plan to have a more unified strategy across theatrical, TV and streaming.
It’s also a testament to NBCU realizing and relishing the risk-taking, creative-friendly asset the company has in Langley.
There was talk following NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell’s exit over sexual harassment claims that Langley would inherit the post given her billion-dollar-grossing track record at the film studio and as a level-headed balancer of scales in negotiations. Comcast CEO Brian Roberts gave those interim duties to Comcast president Mike Cavanagh, but that wasn’t a means to sideline Langley.

“‘Nobody likes to watch people getting eaten by lions.”
Apparently this was the response by the late Sumner Redstone during his National Amusement exhibition days after he saw a screening of the 1981 Tom Skerritt lion movie, Savage Harvest, relayed to me by an exhibition source who overheard him.
As funny as Redstone’s reaction was, it’s an axiom that has rung true: Certain animal-eat-people movies just don’t work. Moviegoers chomp on sharks movies like Jaws and Meg, but other treacherous animal movies aren’t prime to high openings, i.e. Paramount’s alligator movie Crawl and more recently Universal with its Idris Elba title Beast — which was a lion move.
However, this weekend Universal proved that everybody likes to watch people get eaten by bears, as their R-rated Elizabeth Banks-directed Cocaine Bear opened to $23M.

3rd Update, Sunday Am: Nope, despite its B CinemaScore and 79 PostTrak, did not exactly fall apart between Friday and Saturday. If you back out those 6.4M previews out of Friday’s 19.59M, that means the Jordan Peele pic’s first day was 13.19M, and with Saturday at 13.95M, that’s a 6 rise. All of this results in a 44M opening.
While not the 17 rise that Us got over its Friday to Saturday (sans previews), Nope didn’t crater.
While not Us, it’s a respectable result for an original movie, and Universal has shown a talent to make and support those types of movies where some other motion picture studios fall flat. Again, the start for Nope is higher than late summer 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (41M), also a piece of original IP, and higher than Warner Bros.’ Elvis (31.2M), another adult counterprogramming title this summer.
