On November 24, Grammy nominations day, two of the most celebrated inclusions were Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish in the general field, as well as in the pop categories. They share a big achievement: they’re the two most recent Best New Artist winners, Lipa prevailing at the 2019 ceremony, and Eilish in 2020. What might be surprising to some is that both seem to have escaped the infamous “Best New Artist curse,” a popular belief that people who win the coveted award tend to under-perform after winning, either commercially or awards-wise (or both).
In the past we’ve seen a lot of Best New Artist winners turn out to be passing fads. A good example is Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, who won in 2014. Their case is even starker than most because all the other nominees that year have become successful acts in the music industry and claimed Grammys after their Bna losses.

U.K. rapper Slowthai has enlisted A$AP Rocky for a new song, “Mazza,” from his upcoming album, Tyron, out February 5th via Method/Awge/Interscope.
Tyron is split into two thematic and sonic halves, and “Mazza” fits decisively in the album’s harder opening section. Slowthai produced the track with regular collaborator Samo, letting a woozy synth purr over dense bass hits and sharp drums. Slowthai and Rocky peel off verses packed with punchlines, the former spitting, “Gin and tonic/I’m a bigger topic/Bigger pocket/Can’t close my wallet,...

21 Savage and producer Metro Boomin will release Savage Mode 2, a sequel to their 2016 collaborative EP, on Friday, October 2nd via Epic Records.
The duo previewed the project at the album’s official site with a trailer featuring narration from Morgan Freeman.
Over macabre imagery and in-studio shots of the pair, the actor intones, “‘Savage’ is defined as ‘fierce, beastly and untamed.’ ‘Mode’ is defined as ‘a way of operating or using the system.’ So to be in ‘savage mode’ is to go hard, not allowing anything to stop or deter you from your mission.

Slowthai gives birth in the video for “Feel Away,” a new song featuring James Blake and Mount Kimbie.
Directed by Oscar Hudson (who previously worked on Radiohead’s “Lift” video), the clip features the U.K. rapper in a maternity ward as he grows a pregnant belly and gets an ultrasound. Shortly after he gives birth, the baby bizarrely turns out to be cake — which he eagerly breaks apart and eats at the end. Blake appears on vocals, singing, “This time I’ll have one hand free/This has nothing to do with me.

Flatbush Zombies have released “Afterlife,” a stellar new single produced by James Blake.
Shot in Paris prior to the pandemic, the accompanying video features the Brooklyn rap trio in X-ray form — partying, riding in cars and counting money. “Anything suss I’m allergic/I grew up in the hood I deserve it,” Erick the Architect claims across dizzying beats. “Paranoid when I’m counting every dolla because tomorrow ain’t promised when you’re black.”
Director Arnaud Bresson strove to achieve an effect similar to X-ray technology for the video.

Overexposure and oversharing have been accepted as default settings in the modern era, so any glimmer of cryptic mystery are welcome anomalies. Sym Fera are a new duo that reside in Los Angeles and…. well, that’s about all anyone knows so far. WME said Thursday that Marc Geiger, a partner and the agency’s longtime worldwide Head of Music, is leaving after 17 years as part of a restructure in the division. The moves include WME’s Co-Head of Music Sara Newkirk Simon transitioning to a consultant role at WME’s parent Endeavor, where she will continue to advise the Music division.
In the new structure, Lucy Dickins has been elevated to Co-Head of WME Music, joining current Co-Heads Scott Clayton and Kirk Sommer. The trio will guide strategy and operations for the division moving forward.
No reason was given for Geiger’s departure, though Endeavor like others in the industry has been slammed by the coronavirus shutdown and notably its reliance on live events — from sports to fashion to concerts — as well as the shutdown of film and TV production. In May, WME announced that 20% of its employees will either be laid off,...

James Blake has dropped his dreamy new love song “You’re Too Precious,” the singer’s first new music since 2019’s Assume Form.
“After a certain amount of time, somebody becomes too precious to lose,” Blake told Apple Music of the track, an ode of sorts to his girlfriend, The Good Place actress Jameela Jamil. “And now you want to protect them in any way you can.”
Built around a lilting piano melody and subdued beats, Blake twists and contorts his voice like an instrument before laying down the lyrics.

Jameela responded to the hate she was receiving online, and called Tracie an "unhinged idiot." Now, her longtime boyfriend and musician is coming to her defense in his own Twitter thread. Another year, another Roc Nation brunch! On Jan. 25, Beyoncé and Jay-Z hosted their annual pre-Grammys soirée in Los Angeles to celebrate some of music's brightest stars. It seemed as though almost every A-lister in the industry was there, including Rihanna, Megan Thee Stallion, Ari Lennox, Kelly Rowland, Saweetie, and Dua Lipa. A handful of this year's Grammy-nominated artists - such as Jessie Reyez, the Jonas Brothers, Chance the Rapper, Lana Del Rey, and James Blake - were also in attendance.
The floral-themed party came a day before music's biggest night. We still don't know if Beyoncé and Jay-Z will be at the Grammys ceremony, but Bey is nominated for two awards: best pop vocal album for The Lion King: The Gift and best pop solo performance for her song "Spirit." She and Jay have already made one surprise appearance during this award season - let's hope for another one.

Roc Nation's annual pre-Grammys brunch is quickly becoming as glamorous, star-studded, and highly anticipated as the award show itself. It also typically ensures an appearance from Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and sure enough, the power couple attended the Los Angeles event on Saturday looking spiffy in complementary suits.

When Waves was first announced last summer, it was revealed to have a heavy music element, so much so that it was misreported to actually be a musical. Now that Trey Edward Shults’ third feature has arrived, it’s clear it’s not a musical, but the aural landscape–also including a score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross–is indeed made up of many recent favorites which heavily guides the mood of the drama. The writer-director has now shared a massive 55-track playlist featuring both music from the film as well as songs that were heavily on rotation while writing the script. Selections include Frank Ocean, Kanye West, Animal Collective, Tame Impala, Radiohead, James Blake, Outkast, M83, Amy Winehouse, Tyler the Creator, Nine Inch Nails, Kendrick Lamar, Arcade Fire, and many more.

Bon Iver previewed their upcoming fourth LP, i,i, with a deluge of new songs: “iMi” (which features James Blake among its massive cast of collaborators), “We,” “Naeem,” “Marion” and “Holyfields,” (comma intentional) and “Salem.”
“iMi” opens with a heavily processed Blake vocal warble before settling into a tranquil nylon-string guitar pattern, soft electronics and a wall of Justin Vernon’s soulful vocals. “We” rides a bluesy bassline and a heavy sax section, with Vernon navigating his lower falsetto. “Naeem” finds Vernon belting over a gospel piano, building to a choral-stacked chorus.

James Blake melds the surreal and the sentimental with his new video for “Can’t Believe the Way We Flow.”
Director Frank Lebon sets the electro-soul cut to a dizzying montage of scenes between 30 real-life couples: arguing over breakfast, cleaning toilets, having sex and carrying on with their ordinary lives. Lebon also fills the clip with more random touches, including moments of what appears to be bird shit falling on people — including Blake, who sheepishly sings the track on a city bench. James Blake made his daytime TV debut with a performance of his lovestruck ballad “I’ll Come Too” on Ellen Friday.
Prior to the performance, DeGeneres praised Blake’s vocals and the singer-songwriter lived up to the hype, gracefully moving through the soulful love song and swinging back-and-forth from his falsetto as he sang, “I don’t wanna go home/Shall we drive from zone to zone?/I wouldn’t do this on my own/But I’m not on my own tonight.”

When Vicente García pulled in three Latin Grammys for his 2016 album A La Mar, he did so on the strength of handsome ballads: “Bachata en Kingston,” a swaying reggae fusion that was awarded Best Tropical Song, and the tender, conversational “Carmesi,” which became a moderate chart hit. A student of bachata and bolero singers but also American shapeshifters like Paul Simon, García laid claim to a unique corner of singer-songwriter-dom, where he made intricate hybrids sound relaxing.
