The Crow, the forthcoming movie directed by Rupert Sanders, has been the talk of the town since its announcement in 2022. The action-thriller is a reimagining of the same-titled 1994 Alex Proyas film, featuring Brandon Lee in the lead role. With its top-notch cast and storytelling, the $94 million movie was a huge box-office success and struck a chord with the audience. Now the official trailer for Bill Skarsgård’s upcoming flick has further piqued the viewer’s interest.
However, some of the most disturbing information regarding the movie—which will hit theaters on June 7—has just recently come to light. In just one day, the trailer garnered a whopping 53,000 dislikes on YouTube, in contrast to just 42,000 likes. These figures put a serious damper on the movie’s potential to do well at the box office.

Peanuts is undoubtedly one of the best and most famous comic strips that the world has witnessed. It started publication on October 2, 1950, and ended on February 13, 2000.For nearly five decades, it had a good run. At first, the readers saw Charlie Brown and his friends, then his pet dog Snoopy, then the yellow bird Woodstock, and then the number of characters grew. Many loved the Peanuts comics strip. Even though its fans grew old and had families, the Peanuts gang barely aged and only changed in appearance thanks to improved drawing styles. The Peanuts strips also inspired

It’s shaping up to be particularly interesting year in the race for the Oscar in sound. The sound branch reinstated its shortlist and bake-off a year ago (one year after combining sound editing and mixing into a single category), and this season it narrowed the field for its Oscar to a fascinatingly diverse shortlist of stellar work on 10 movies.
Notably, the shortlist includes both an international and documentary feature: Germany’s All Quiet on the Western Front, Edward Berger’s adaptation of the classic novel for Netflix (which also made the shortlists for international feature and for score, makeup and hairstyling, as well as visual effects), and Brett Morgen’s David Bowie documentary, Moonage Daydream (also shortlisted in the doc feature competition). Historically, Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, Mexico’s entry in what was then called the foreign-language film category, was nominated for sound editing and mixing in 2018; the seminal...

What will be your first movie of 2023? If you’re reading this it’s likely you put some (let’s be honest: too much) thought into what commences the cinematic year. The Criterion Channel’s January lineup will put some good things front and center: they’re launching a 20-film cinema verité series that highlights all major figures of the form; an eight-film Mike Leigh retrospective that focuses on his little-seen, lesser-discussed BBC features produced between 1973 and 1984; a series on Abbas Kiarostami’s studies of childhood; and because you’ve either seen Eo or have it marked to watch, Jerzy Skolimowski’s three most-acclaimed films should be of equal note.

“This film should be played loud!” It’s a cliché now, a concert-movie disclaimer that’s become the equivalent of that hippie-dippy tagline from those Freedom Rock compilation ads (“Well, turn it up, maaaaan.”) But in the late Seventies, when it first flashed onscreen in all white font against a stark black background before the credits of The Last Waltz, you knew it meant business. Keep moving that volume knob clockwise, folks. Let the needle swing into the red.

A month before Woodstock 50 was announced, the festival was already in deep trouble. Last December, Michael Lang, the co-founder of the original 1969 event who had become its bemused-hippie symbol in subsequent decades, was in talks with an upstate New York racetrack for a fest that would mark the anniversary of the historic, if chaotic, cultural milestone he had overseen. The new festival would take place August 16th – 18th, 2019, almost exactly 50 years after the original Woodstock.

The legacy of the Woodstock Festival — which took place in Bethel, New York, from Friday, August 15th, 1969, through the morning of Monday, August 18th — rests on the fact that a half-million hippies turned a muddy, gridlocked area into a site that symbolized peace and love. The event also confirmed that rock & roll had entered the mainstream.
The event has shaped culture to this day. Rolling Stone caught up with Woodstock ’69 vets Country Joe McDonald, David Fricke, and Greil Marcus to ask why the inadvertently free music event continues to resonate in popular culture.

Fifty years after the original Woodstock festival took place, mementos of the event are scattered across the country. Jimi Hendrix’s guitar is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; Wavy Gravy’s sleeping bag is housed at the Fur Peace Ranch in Ohio (owned by former Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen). Jack Casady’s bass, Johnny Winter’s chain necklace and the original plans for the location can be found at a museum on the site of the festival in Bethel, New York.

Does the world really need another movie about Woodstock? There are fewer of them than you might imagine, but the two that most readily spring to mind feel like a closed parenthetical: Michael Wadleigh released his definitive 1970 concert documentary when the music was still echoing across the fields of upstate New York, and Ang Lee’s 2009 “Taking Woodstock” suggested we should have left it at that.
Barak Goodman (“Oklahoma City”) and co-director Jamila Ephron (“Far from the Tree”) must have disagreed. Made in conjunction with PBS, timed for the 50th anniversary, and set for a proper theatrical run before airing on the television channel later this year, their “Woodstock: Three Days that Defined a Generation” revisits the epochal music festival as if it had never been done before — as if the Aquarian Exposition isn’t the only rock concert in American history that gets its own page in high school textbooks.
