Amy Pond and Rory Williams are perhaps the most beloved companions the Doctor ever had. Their evolution on screen in terms of character development is among the most extensive character evolutions of the show. For those that haven’t met the Ponds, let’s discuss who they are and how exactly they have evolved in the “Doctor Who” series.
Who Are Amy Pond and Rory Williams?
Amy Pond and Rory Williams, collectively known in the series as The Ponds, were the companions and in-laws to Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor. Though they’re husband and wife, they’re referred to as The Ponds due to Rory’s timid personality compared to Amy’s confidence and decisiveness — hence the fans’ joke that Rory should’ve taken Amy’s last name.
Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor, though appearing later in the show, after the Ponds, stated on an occasion that there would...

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who: Flux Chapter 4 ‘Village of the Angels’
The Weeping Angels are back, and they are not playing. To be honest, even attempting another Weeping Angels episode is a pretty brave feat in itself. Moffat’s trilogy of stories pretty covered all the bases. ‘Blink’ established the rules for Angels. ‘The Time of the Angels/Flesh and Stone’ gave them the Aliens treatment. ‘The Angels Take Manhattan’ showed us what happened when the Angels won, with a New York hotel turned into a Weeping Angels battery farm.
After that story, Moffat declared he was resting the Weeping Angels, and he stuck to that. Barring a couple of cameos, we didn’t see the Angels again in his tenure. ‘Village of the Angels’ has to work hard to justify itself. It does this partly by putting the Angels in a folk-horror-ish English village setting for which they are a terrifyingly natural fit.

Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill made a surprise return as Amy Pond and Rory Williams in a new Doctor Who scene today and fans are having a difficult time handling their emotions.
Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Doctor Who alumni have tried their best to entertain us and help us go through this difficult period of self-isolation. After Steven Moffat and Matt Smith joined folks on Twitter to rewatch the 50th-anniversary episode, “The Day of the Doctor,” Neil Gaiman decided to participate in a similar event today by revisiting his season 6 episode, “The Doctor’s Wife.” And joining him were McU star Karen Gillan and The CW’s Rip Hunter, Arthur Darvill.
Of course, Whovians know the two as entirely different characters. The Ponds served as the main companions to Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor, but since their tragic departure from the show in 2013 in “The Angels Take Manhattan,” we haven...

The cast and crew of Doctor Who have been busy over the past couple of weeks entertaining fans during this period of self-isolation amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ever since its conception back in 1963, the BBC’s popular sci-fi show has advocated the idea of bringing people together and showing that so long as there’s hope, there’s a future. Or as Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor once said, “where there are tears, there’s hope.” And the importance of the Doctor’s message is now more relevant than ever.
With the novel coronavirus pandemic winding through different states around the globe and claiming victims by the minute, this show is a powerful reminder that we should all try to be the Doctors of these trying times, for as Steven Moffat taught us in his tenure as showrunner, the name of the Doctor is a promise, and that promise is to never be cruel,...

The Doctor: “Time is a structure relative to ourselves. Time is the space made by our lives, where we stand together forever. Time and relative dimension in space. It means life… This is the gateway to everything that ever was and ever can be.

My daughter Alixandra has wanted to watch Doctor Who but she’s been intimidated by the idea of catching up with 50 years of the show’s history. Hey, who wouldn’t be? I told her to start with “new Who,” with Christopher Eccleston’s as the 9th Doctor, which was “only” 12 years ago (is it really over a decade already?) and that “Rose,” the first episode, would do a great job of hooking her into the basics – although she already sorta knows them, as she remembers me watching the Tom Baker years...

As most of us Whovians and ComicMixers know, BBC America became the All Doctor Who All The Wibbly Wobbly Timey Winey Stuff network this past week in honor of the premiere of Season 9 – which, as I write this, airs tonight, Saturday, September 19. So I pretty much kept my TV tuned to channel 101 (the BBC America station on my cable system), except for some episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Hardball with Chris Matthews – oh, and the first half-hour of the Repugnantican debate on CNN, of which the less I have to say about that sorry affair the better, except that it disgusted me, and I returned to the All Doctor Who All The Wibbly Wobbly Timey Winey Stuff with relief.
So here’s a rundown of my opinions of random episodes in the lives of the Doctor.

It's not just Rory. These 42 Doctor Who characters have all, in their own way, died and been resurrected...
Spoilers! Lot of them, for Doctor Who of old and new lie ahead. Including the (publicised) return of a face or two to Doctor Who series 9.
Cheating death is a fundamental part of the make-up of Doctor Who. It's lasted for 52 years so far, whether on television or in spin-off media, and that's in no small part because of the original idea to recast the title character in 1966, thus creating the concept of regeneration.
But resurrection has also affected the characters around the Doctor and with a new series about to start, that looks to be as prominent as ever. Heck, series 9 even has a two-parter called The Girl Who Died and The Woman Who Lived. Plus, we already know that apparently dead characters such as Missy, Osgood and River Song will...

Doctor Who’s Rory, Arthur Darvill, and Broadway actress Ciara Renee will play heroic roles in the Arrow and The Flash spin-off show…
If Arthur Darvill was one of your favourite things about the Ponds-in-the-tardis tenure of Doctor Who, you’re in luck – the former Rory Williams actor has signed up for a hefty role in another geeky TV show, the crossover/spin-off show from The CW’s Arrow and The Flash.
The actor – who you might also know from Broadchurch, or his stint in the West End version of Once - picked up one of those rumoured roles we reported on earlier this month. Specifically, he’s landed the role that we then knew as ‘the traveller’ (“a Han Solo-esque rogue who gets by with his charm, this hero hails from the future, and has journeyed back in time on a secret mission”).
Now, though, we know that his character is officially Rip Hunter,...

While Marvel comics have enjoyed success on the big screen over the years, their counterpart DC Comics has similarly found success on the small screen. The company’s most notable two shows have been Arrow and The Flash, both of which have enjoyed critical and commercial success on The CW. The world that the two shows have created led to the announcement that the channel was developing a new spinoff series that would be set in the same universe. Now the as-yet-untitled series has cast its first two original characters, as the creators have tapped Doctor Who‘s Arthur Darvill to play Rip Hunter and newcomer Ciara Renée to play Hawkgirl.
The duo will be joining a number of already-established characters and castmembers from both shows, as the series has already confirmed the casting of Brandon Routh, Wentworth Miller, Victor Garber, Dominic Purcell, and Caity Lotz in the spinoff. Of the group,...

Arthur Darvill has said that none of the Broadchurch cast have been allowed to watch the upcoming second series ahead of broadcast.
The actor, who reprises his role as Reverend Paul Coates in the crime drama, revealed on Good Morning Britain that secrecy surrounding the series is so important that the actors have not been able to see the new episodes in full.
"I haven't seen it. None of us have seen it. We're not allowed to see any of it," he said. "I've seen little bits of it for doing Adr, but not a whole episode. From the little tiny nuggets I've seen it looks amazing.
"There's so many of us in it that we all concentrate on our own little bits, so I can't wait to see everyone else in it."

My geek is in overdrive.
Doctor Who’s premiere is on August 23rd on BBCAmerica this side of the pond (that’s the premiere date for much of the rest of the world, too) I’ve been hitting BBCAmerica’s website for news and sneak peeks. Former Doctor Who star Arthur Darvill has taken part in the latest parody of the Oscar-winning song 'Let It Go' from Frozen.
The Rory Williams actor teamed up with BBC Radio 1 to record his own version of the track, in which he begs Doctor Who fans to focus their attention on his work outside of the sci-fi show.
The tongue-in-cheek lyrics include Darvill yearning to be more than "just a bloke riding in a Tardis", and his insistence that one of his co-stars was more frightening than the Daleks.
"That got really intense there," Darvill joked of his own vocal performance.
Darvill served as the 11th Doctor's (Matt Smith) companion Rory Williams from 2010 to 2012.
Previous parodies have mashed up Frozen with Grand Theft Auto and poked fun at similarities between the animated movie and Game of Thrones.

The Eleventh Doctor
Portrayed by: Matt Smith
Companion(s): Amy Pond, Rory Williams, River Song, Clara Oswald
Tenure: 39 stories (44 episodes), from “The Eleventh Hour” (April, 2010) to “The Time of the Doctor” (Dec, 2013)

He starts with a tweed jacket, which later becomes a long purple (all together now) frock coat (the Doctor loves his frock coats), button-down shirt, bowtie (they’re cool), suspenders, lace-up boots, and, to go with his purple coat, a purple waistcoat and pocket watch with chain. And of course, if possible, he will accessorize with whatever distinctive headware is handy.
Catchphrase: The Eleventh Doctor has several catchphrases, particularly, “Geronimo”, “Come along, Pond”, and “I like <fill in the blank>s now. <Fill in the blank>s are cool.”
Personality: The Eleventh Doctor is whimsical and energetic, but also brooding and manipulative. His number one rule for his Companions is that the Doctor always lies,...

River Song
Portrayed By: Alex Kingston
Doctor(s): Tenth Doctor, Eleventh Doctor
Tenure: 9 stories (14 episodes), from “Silence in the Library”/”Forest of the Dead” to “The Name of the Doctor”
Background: River Song is an archaeologist, time traveler, and adventurer whose connection to the Doctor is only revealed slowly over time. When we first meet her in “Silence in the Library”, she has known the Doctor for a long time, and though that adventure ends up being their last together from her perspective, it is only the beginning for the Doctor.
Family/Friends: It is implied, over the course of her tenure, that River is the Doctor’s lover (and, if you count an alternate timeline ceremony, his wife) as well as the daughter of his longtime companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams. River and the Doctor, both being time travelers, never meet in the right order, so they...

Where would the Doctor be without his companions? In recent years he’s had no more than two at a time, but in the Classic era, it felt sometimes like the Tardis was abuzz with activity. But still, one thing was for certain – every companion who strides in and mutters “it’s bigger on the inside!” for the first time has to eventually leave at some point in the future.
These exits have been varied. Quite a few have left to lead new lives with new loves in a foreign or distant land (either by location, or by time itself). A few have been simply written out abruptly, such as Liz Shaw, whose departure was simply mentioned in the following episode. Other characters have also failed at being companions – NuWho’s Adam stands out – while others have shuffled off mortal coil althogether, with Katarina being the first companion to die...

In a bit of surprising news, it sounds like AMC and Seth Rogen are working on an adaptation of Garth Ennis‘ comic Preacher. So far, Preacher has turned out to be a challenging comic to adapt — an attempt to turn it into a film and another to make an HBO series fizzled. Still, its fans are passionate about it, and I would guess there are probably a lot of Preacher fans who also read The Walking Dead.
Radio Times surveyed readers to ask their favorite Doctor and companions. David Tennant came in first while Rose was picked as favorite companion, making me question their judgement. (Captain Jack came in seventh — ahead of Martha Jones, Rory Williams, K-9 and current companion Clara Oswald).
Come on, Whovians, how can you prefer the entitled one?
CBS has ordered a pilot for the proposed How I Met Your Mother spin-off series. However, contrary to earlier reports,...

There's now less than two weeks before the 50th anniversary of "Doctor Who" brings about "The Day of the Doctor." Present and cast members are excited about the momentous occasion, whether they are appearing in the special or not.
Alex Kingston, who plays the role of River Song, sent a special message to Whovians while attending the BAFTA La Britannia Awards Saturday (November 9). In a photo for BBC America, she holds up a napkin that reads "Happy 50th Anniversary," while wearing a big smile.
River, the daughter of Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill), was last seen in "The Name of the Doctor."

We know a lot of things about The Doctor, even as we still know so very little. We know he travels through time and space in a Police Box that’s bigger on the inside. We know he fights for justice wherever he lands. And we know he hates to travel alone. Throughout the vast majority of the series he forms the center of, he is accompanied by one or more people (known colloquially as “Companions”) who serve as audience surrogates, conversation partners, and, as often as not, a moral compass to ensure The Doctor doesn’t lose his way in the stars. In its first two seasons, Doctor Who wasn’t just learning how to be a TV show (a precarious process for all new series), it was also forming the building blocks for a legacy that now spans a half century and virtually every medium we have invented for communicating stories.

The new British crime series, Broadchurch, has all the pathos, intelligence, drama and twists that mystery fans have come to expect from the genre, but it also unites two popular Doctor Who stars for the very first time.
Arthur Darvill just came off a successful run on Doctor Who as beloved companion Rory Williams and co-star David Tennant was one of the most beloved Doctors in the show’s history. So, naturally, their meeting had to be an auspicious occasion…or was it?

It’s really silly that we haven’t met yet.’ And then he just went, ‘Yeah, yeah, that’s true.’ And then we had nothing really else to say to each other for a while.” Darvill added with a giggle,...

The seventh series of the popular and long running British science fiction television series Doctor Who aired from September 2012 to May 2013, with a brief hiatus splitting the series into two parts. The series was broadcast concurrently on BBC One in the United Kingdom and BBC America in the United States. Doctor Who's seventh series was the show's third and final series in which Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill played the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor and his companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams respectively. Karen Gillan's Pond was replaced by Jenna-Louise Coleman who co-stars as Clara Oswald. While Smith is moving on, Series 8 will see Steven Moffat return as series writer and the feature of iconic adversaries the Ice Warriors and the Daleks. The eighth series is planned to start filming in September 2013 with new episodes airing in 2014. Related Content: Rumor: Doctor...

Ever since Matt Smith suddenly announced his departure from Doctor Who, fans have been chomping at the bit to find out who will be his replacement. We spoke to former Doctor Who star Arthur Darvill to find out whom he thinks could wield the Sonic Screwdriver next and also to address some of those pesky 50th Anniversary rumors about Amy and Rory…
When asked point blank about whether or not we’ll get any sort of cameo from the Ponds in the 50th Anniversary Special, Darvill laughed, “Well, I’m here!” So, there it is. Amy and Rory probably aren’t coming back and Darvill is happily (and ironically) settled for the time being in New York City, which renders him incapable of joining in the fun. He added, “I think it is going to be insane, but brilliant! I’m really looking forward to it to see what happens…...
