CrunchyRoll announced three new acquisitions in a CinemaCon presentation on Tuesday led by Svo global communications Mitchel Berger.
The Sony-owned company has acquired global rights to volleyball anime Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle, which has become the highest grossing film in Japan for the year to date, amassing approximately $57m (8.5bn Yen) since the February 15 release.
The feature marks the 10th anniversary of the series and will be available in Japanese with English subtitles and will be dubbed in English.

A trio of anime properties will be coming to North American theaters later this year, with the Sony-owned Crunchyroll unveiling plans at CinemaCon Tuesday during a presentation that underscored the once-underground medium has gone mainstream.
Haikyu!!: The Dumpster Battle will arrive in theaters on May 31, both subtitled and dubbed. The film is a continuation of the volleyball-themed anime. Shoyo Hinata and the Kurasuno High volleyball team have made their theatrical debut in Japan, and they are ready to set up for theaters around the world! While the match between Karasuno and Nekoma is a fierce one, Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle has entered into a box office battle with a tough opponent – Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron . The two films are now neck and neck on the Japanese all-time box office charts, with The Boy and the Heron just slightly above Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle at 58th and 60th place respectively. As of April 7, Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle has brought in 9.267 billion yen (US$61.75 million) on the back of 6.48 million tickets sold. This makes the Haikyu!! Final the 60th highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, just slightly above Arrietty at 9.26 billion yen. For The Boy and the Heron , as of April 7, the Academy Award-winning feature has made 9.3 billion yen (US$64.99 million) in Japan. This brings it to 58th place on the all-time charts, sharing the spot with 2018’s Code Blue: The Movie , thus eliminating the 59th spot.

Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle entered its third month in Japanese theaters today and with that came a massive win for Karasuno and every team on the roster. Following the last weekend in March, first anime film in the Haikyu!! Final duology reached 72nd place on the Japanese all-time box office charts. As of March 31, 2024, Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle has made 8.75 billion yen (US$58.35 million) on the back of over 6.1 million tickets sold for the volleyball flick. On the all-time Japanese box office charts, Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle is just shy of 2013’s The Eternal Zero ’s 8.76 billion yen and above 1999’s The Matrix ’s straight 8 billion yen takings. With Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle continuing to stay in the top three weekend box office attendance over the place few weeks, the sky continues to be the limit for the first part of the culmination of the mega sports anime franchise. The sounds of shoes scraping the volleyball court are tearing up Japan as Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle , the first part of the Haikyu!! Final duology of anime films, continues to dominate theaters. According to Kogyo Tsushin, the film has garnered over 2.9 million attendees and 4.18 billion yen in revenue within just ten days. The film has gone on to surpass the 3.8 billion yen earned by ‘The First Slam Dunk‘ film within the same time frame.

Final anime film’s keeps winning as the movie held strong over the long weekend coming in first place again and dominating the box office, by being the 4th film ever in Japan to pass 4 billion yen in the same time frame. This puts the film on pace to reach at least 10 billion yen by the end of its run with 15 billion yen also being in play. As of February 25, the first Haikyu!!
