Exclusive, Updated: The latter half of the 2024 theatrical release schedule just got a shot of testosterone as Amazon MGM Studios and Seven Bucks’ epic Christmas action comedy Red One just set an exclusive global theatrical release for Nov. 15, 2024.
Similar to other committed Amazon MGM theatrical titles of late, i.e. Air and Saltburn, Red One will have a theatrical window before streaming on its ultimate home, which is Prime Video.
By releasing Red One theatrically on November 15, Amazon MGM Studios is looking to take advantage of the traditionally lucrative holiday corridor before Thanksgiving. Rival wide releases on Nov. 15 include Warner Bros. Robert De Niro mobster movie, Alto Knights and Lionsgate and Kingdom Story’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. I hear that the movie has tested twice and scores were through the roof. This was in the last week, we understand. The original testing of the movie over the summer...

The second teaser trailer for Netflix’s Bird Box spinoff, Bird Box Barcelona, reveals much more of the terror the citizens of Barcelona are feeling as the creatures launch their attack. The premise remains the same as the original film – cover your eyes and never ever look at the creatures – but the setting switches to show how the world’s dealing with these bizarre beasts.
Bird Box starring Oscar winner Sandra Bullock premiered in December 2018, and the spinoff will debut on Netflix on July 14, 2023. Goya award winner Mario Casas (No matarás) leads the cast of the spinoff, starring Georgina Campbell, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Diego Calva, and Patrick Criado.
In addition, Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo De Castro, Michelle Jenner, and Leonardo Sbaraglia also star.
Álex Pastor and David Pastor penned the screenplay and co-directed. Dylan Clark, Chris Morgan, Núria Valls, Adrián Guerra, Josh Malerman, and Ryan Lewis produced the post-apocalyptic thriller.

Producer Dylan Clark tells EW, “The events that we see Malorie/Sandra Bullock endure in the original Bird Box are happening at the same time that Sebastian/Mario Casas is going through his journey. In today's news of slightly unnecessary projects, Netflix is reviving its hit original film "Bird Box" with a sequel-extension film called "Bird Box Barcelona." You read that right, we're getting another "Bird Box" film, but seemingly one that is simply adjacent to, and not a continuation of, the events of the original. Interesting.
Netflix debuted a one-minute teaser trailer for the new film — which was announced back in March 2021 — and it gives us a glimpse into a similar event as the 2018 film, only in Europe this time. There is chaos in major cities, and folks turn to obscuring their sight in the outside world in order to obtain shelter. Again, it's very much a global repositioning of the events of the first film, however, it does seem like this new story will have some of its own twists and turns.

Goya award winner Mario Casas (No matarás) takes on the starring role in the spinoff. The cast includes Georgina Campbell, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Diego Calva, and Patrick Criado. In addition, Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo De Castro, Michelle Jenner, and Leonardo Sbaraglia also star.
Álex Pastor and David Pastor wrote the screenplay and co-directed. The post-apocalyptic thriller was produced by Dylan Clark, Chris Morgan, Núria Valls, Adrián Guerra, Josh Malerman and Ryan Lewis. Ainsley Davies and Brian Williams served as executive producers.

Back at the end of 2018, Netflix had a huge hit with their apocalyptic horror thriller Bird Box, based on a novel by Josh Malerman (pick up a copy Here). While Malerman has written a Bird Box sequel called Malorie (buy that one Here), Netflix has been focusing on the idea of producing Bird Box spin-offs that will be set in various locations around the globe. First up is a spin-off that’s set in Spain and was written and directed by Alex and David Pastor. While we’ve previously heard that this spin-off was going by the title A Ciegas, which happens to have been the Spanish title used for the first Bird Box, Netflix has now announced that the film is officially titled Bird Box Barcelona – and it will be available to watch on the streaming service as of July 14th!

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

Hollywood has come together to make a change over the portrayal of gun violence onscreen.
Judd Apatow, Mark Ruffalo, Jimmy Kimmel, Damon Lindelof, Adam McKay, Julianne Moore, Shonda Rhimes, Eli Roth, Mark Ruffalo, Amy Schumer, and John Glickman are among the first round of signatures for a petition calling for the film and TV industry to re-examine its influence on national gun violence in the U.S.
The petition, titled “Open Letter to Our Colleagues in the Creative Community,” calls for studios to model responsible gun safety practices in productions and curb portrayals of guns in scenes involving children. The effort, led by activists Christy Callahan, the co-chair of the Brady United Against Gun Violence organization’s Regional Leadership Council, and Robert Bowers Disney, comes after the Uvalde elementary school mass shooting on May 24.
“Considering there have been over 250 other mass shootings so far this year, it’s an almost incomprehensible tragedy.

Exclusive: Liz Hannah has been set to adapt and make her feature directorial debut on Under Another Name, the upcoming Alexandra Andrews debut novel bought late last year by Universal Pictures for producers Chris Morgan Productions & Pascal Pictures. It’s the latest big step for the screenwriter who came out of AFI and made a high-profile debut with the spec script The Post, which became the Steven Spielberg-directed drama starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep in the drama about the Washington Post‘s role in exposing the Pentagon Papers.
Hannah is currently executive producer on Hulu’s upcoming limited series The Drop Out, and writer-producer on Season 2 of Netflix’s Mindhunter, for which she was nominated for a WGA Award earlier this year. In 2017, Hannah was awarded the WGA Paul Selvin Award for The Post, and was nominated for a Golden Globe.
Under Another Name is described as a timely psychological thriller about ambition.

“Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” the action film starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, earned $5.8 million at the box office in Thursday night previews from 3,400 screens. It opens on 4,253 screens this weekend.
Universal’s spinoff, stand-alone film of the “Fast & Furious” franchise is tracking in the low $60 million range, with the studio projecting between $57-60 million. The eighth and previous film in the franchise, “The Fate of the Furious,” made $10.4 million at the Thursday box office before opening to $98.7 million.
As a spinoff without the traditional “Fast & Furious” family on board, the film is looking additionally to the star power of The Rock, Statham and Idris Elba to get audiences in the seats. Further, much of the success of the franchise has come from overseas, with the last film managing to cross over $1 billion globally despite only 18.3% of its total grosses coming domestically.

A new “Hobbs & Shaw” trailer packs in the international action with fast cars and high-intensity fight scenes.
When the first trailer dropped in February, viewers were introduced to the genetically-enhanced villain Brixton, played by Idris Elba, as well as a newly cordial relationship between old enemies Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), who are returning for the “Fast and Furious” franchise’s ninth film.
At the start of the trailer, Hobbs and Shaw knock out a group of gun-wielding baddies blockading a locked door in Chernobyl. The duo takes out each crew member with ease — so much ease that Hobbs yawns in the middle of fighting. After the fight fest, Hobbs and Shaw get access to a face-recognition lock using the faces of their fallen enemies. The trailer sparks a laugh when Shaw repeatedly gets denied access because his victim’s face fails the test.

We have a common enemy! Idris Elba plans on playing opposite Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in the Fast and Furious spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw!
The moment Fate of the Furious ended, Universal Pictures saw an opening to give Dwayne Johnson's character, Hobbs, the spin-off film, they so desired. It turns out, all it took was a positive reception of Jason Statham's character, Shaw (which really should've been Calvin), in the over-the-top 8th installment of the franchise. It didn't hurt that the chemistry between the two was palpable, as well. Since then, Universal greenlit the project, signed their two high profile badasses, and put pen to paper, courtesy of Fast and Furious' own Chris Morgan. Now, a new report sees another A-list actor joining the ranks!

Exclusive: Blumhouse has acquired the rights to adapt the New York Magazine article “Worst Roommate Ever” about a serial squatter and murderer in what will be the first project developed simultaneously for both film and television. Chris Morgan from the Fast & Furious franchise is on board to develop the feature.
The story, written by William Brennan — who will serve as an executive producer on both projects — is about Alex Miller who let Jed Creek into her Philadelphia apartment, not having a clue he was actually Jamison Bachman, a notorious serial squatter and the ultimate Craigslist nightmare. In an expensive and frightening ordeal that dragged on for months, Bachman slowly laid claim to Alex’s apartment, using his intricate knowledge of tenancy laws to stay one step ahead of her. He kicked down doors, attacked her and left her feeling unsafe in her own home.

Exclusive: In a pre-emptive mid-six- against seven-figure deal, Universal has acquired an untitled action comedy pitch for Chris Morgan Productions, I’ve learned. Matt Allen and Chris Borrelli will pen the script based on their pitch — whose logline is being kept tightly under wraps. However, I’m told by a person close to the project that it has the potential of becoming an action comedy tentpole. Both writers have a long relationship with Fast & Furious franchise writer Morgan. He’ll produce via his Universal-based banner.
Borrelli and Allen’s stars have been steadily rising. Borrelli recently collaborated with Morgan on Lionsgate’s The Vatican Tapes with Borrelli writing the script and the two producing alongside Chris Cowles and Lakeshore Entertainment. It hits theaters February 27.
Borrelli’s script Wake is starting production in February with John Pogue directing for Benaroya Pictures with Exclusive Media, Dmg, and Circle of Confusion producing. His...

Exclusive: Universal Pictures is remaking iNumber Number, and David Digilio has been set to script the remake of the Donovan Marsh-directed South African thriller that premiered last fall at Toronto. Universal acquired those rights shortly after the fest. Pic is an action thriller centered on an undercover police detective who crosses over from cop to robber in order to orchestrate a major heist. (Check out the original’s trailer below.) Chris Morgan will produce for his Universal-based Chris Morgan Productions. Aram Tertzakian of Xyz Films is also producing and so is Emile Gladstone. Xyz partners Nate Bolotin and Nick Spicer are exec producers. Digilio most recently wrote a TV series adaptation of the Tony Scott-directed Denzel Washington drama Man On Fire for 20th Century Fox TV and New Regency TV, and he sold a pitch based on the Robert Crais novel Suspect to Fox 2000 with Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson producing.

What's cooler than Nazi zombies? Few things, really, but Nazis fighting Ally werewolves is pretty damned close. Speaking of which, Universal is ready to start howling again with the film rights to the Robert McCammon novel The Wolf’s Hour.
According to Deadline, Universal Pictures has acquired the novel for Chris Morgan and Emile Gladstone to produce through their Universal-based Chris Morgan Productions banner. While Universal has done several werewolf films since launching the classic from its original movie monster library, this is a different take on the legend, and it comes with a screenplay.
The novel focuses around a man who is recruited by the Allies in WWII specifically for his ability to go werewolf. He’s charged with stopping a Nazi plot to drop poison gas on England, and at the same time he searches for his long lost blood brother.
The script was written by Bradley and Kevin Marcus.
