Offstage, and sometimes on, David Mamet can be infuriating and exasperating, as anyone who has witnessed his recent nonsensical, offensive media blitz can attest, and then along comes something like American Buffalo – possibly his greatest work, all due apologies to Glengarry Glen Ross – with a cast so in sync with the playwright’s “profane poetry” that for a couple hours it’s not impossible to put aside whatever it is Mamet thinks needs saying on Fox News these days.
Superbly performed by Laurence Fishburne, Sam Rockwell and Darren Criss, with director (and longtime Mamet collaborator) Neil Pepe finding every comic beat and threatening glare, American Buffalo – opening tonight on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre – retains a vitality that eluded some recent equally starry revivals of works by Mamet’s bad-boy contemporaries.

Let’s take a closer look at the three nominees for Best Play Revival: “Betrayal,” “Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune” and “A Solider’s Play.” Our exclusive odds give the edge to “A Soldier’s Play,” but this only remains to be one of the closest races at this year’s virtual awards. Remember, only those Tony voters who saw all three nominees can vote in this category. Tony watchers theorize that this new rule helped “The Boys in the Band” win this race last year despite being the first production of the season to have opened.
The first nominee is the third Broadway revival of Harold Pinter’s 1978 award-winning play, “Betrayal.” The story chronicles a seven-year affair in reverse chronological order. The original Broadway edition earned Tony nominations for star Blythe Danner and director Peter Hall.

Even before I hit my teens, I found myself fascinated with rumored or alternate sequels that never made it to the big screen for franchises like Alien and Predator, and often wondered what other franchises had lost sequels. Of course there are famous abandoned movie ideas, but authors Dustin McNeill and Travis Mullins did an incredible amount of research for Taking Shape, and now they're back with Taking Shape II, detailing 24 (!!) Halloween sequels that never saw the light of day!

Blame the coronavirus for this year’s drastically reduced roster of eligible Tony Award nominees, and Tony nominators for overlooking at least a few possibilities. Even with only 18 Broadway productions in the running for a 2020 award, feelings were bound to be hurt.
Let’s start with the good news: The list of nominees for the 74th Annual Tony Awards is a solid one, with no noticeable contenders – at least to my eye – sneaking in due to the decreased competition. Good luck to voters parsing their choices for one castmate over another – Sea Wall/A Life‘s Jake Gyllenhaal or Tom Sturridge? Slave Play‘s Ato Blankson-Wood or James Cusati-Moyer, and Chalia La Tour or Annie McNamara? Jagged Little Pill‘s Kathryn Gallagher, Celia Rose Gooding or Lauren Patten?
Of course we’ll never know how the list would be different if Six, West Side Story...

Every Tony Awards nominations morning features thrilling surprises and shocking omissions, and even in a year with an unfortunately thinner slate of shows due to Covid-19, theatre fans will inevitably find themselves gutted by a snub or two on October 15. Below, I spotlight four contenders whose contributions to the season I hope will not get overlooked by the Tonys nominating committee.
Featured Actor in a Play––Will Hochman (“The Sound Inside”)
“The Sound Inside” deserves across-the-board Tony nominations, and bids for Best Play, Mary-Louise Parker, and director David Cromer all seem assured. Out of the categories where its chances seem a bit shakier, though, a Featured Actor nomination for Will Hochman sits at the very top of my wish list. Holding one’s own in a two-hander with Tony-champion Parker sounds like a gargantuan task, but Hochman made it look effortless. His take on Christopher, an at-first unlikable college student...

The 2020 Tony Awards may represent a shortened Broadway season, but there is a wealth of contenders to consider for the play categories. Fall and winter on the rialto was full of non-musical dramas, which will make for plenty of tense races at this year’s ceremony. Nominations will be announced October 15 with a virtual ceremony sometime later this fall. To help you predict which productions and performers might come out on top this year, take a read of the potential nominees for the play categories below.

Who’s the third most prolific star in the Halloween franchise behind only Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence? It’s Danielle Harris, who’s appeared in four installments of the horror series over the decades. The actress played Jamie Lloyd, daughter of Laurie Strode, in Halloweens 4-5 and then turned up as Annie Brackett in Rob Zombie’s reboot movies. To date, though, she’s yet to return for Blumhouse’s films. But Harris would definitely be up for it if she was asked back.
While speaking to ComicBook.com about the potential for her to return in some shape or form, she opened up about her fondness for the Halloween universe and how it feels like coming home, so of course she’d want to be invited back. Even despite her mixed feelings about the recent relaunch.

There was a lot of skepticism when it was first announced that the unlikely duo of David Gordon Green and Danny McBride were rebooting the Halloween franchise, especially when the long-running series had drastically fallen victim to the law of diminishing returns. However, all doubts were quickly extinguished when the movie hit theaters in October 2018 and scored the best reviews Michael Myers had seen in 40 years while becoming the highest-grossing installment yet by a massive distance.
Riding a wave of critical and commercial acclaim, back to back sequels Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends were swiftly announced, although we’ll have to wait until 2021 for the iconic serial killer to return after both follow-ups were delayed by a full year as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. A brief teaser trailer was more than enough to whet the appetites of the fanbase, but one former star of the franchise wasn’t impressed with the last effort.

If you’re confused as to who is actually able to compete for the newly announced virtual Tony Awards this fall, you’re not alone. The Tony Awards Administration Committee announced a new cut off date of February 19, 2020. That means that the 2019-2020 Broadway season was cut incredibly short.
Musical races are most heavily affected by the shortened season. “West Side Story” will have to wait until next year to compete as it opened after the February 19th eligibility cutoff date. Other scheduled revivals of “Caroline, or Change” and “Company” were postponed due to the Broadway shutdown. As such there will be no Revival of a Musical category this year. Other categories, like Best Musical and Director of a Musical, will likely see their number of nominees reduced to three due to a limited number of contenders.
Luckily, there are plenty of plays in contention since many of these non-musical outings premiere in the fall.

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, the sixth movie in the franchise, is for a number of reasons not an installment remembered fondly. A primary bone of contention is Danielle Harris not reprising her role as Jamie Lloyd, who she had played as a child in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers.
The problem was that although years had passed since the release of the previous movie, Lloyd was only 17 when filming was to begin, making her legally still a minor and thus greatly restricting the number of hours she was able to work. To get around this, Harris went through the process of emancipation at great financial cost to herself, which could have resulted in her participation were it not for further complications.
In the movie, Jamie is killed at the end of the first act, whereupon the focus shifts...

Daniel Monks.
After making his feature film debut in director Stevie Cruz-Martin’s Pulse, Daniel Monks moved to London in 2018 because he figured the UK offered more career opportunities.
That proved to be a smart decision as the actor made his West End debut this year as the lead in Teenage Dick – and then went straight into rehearsals for a contemporary re-imagining of the classic Chekhov play The Seagull.
In the adaptation by Anya Reiss which premieres at Playhouse Theatre on March 11, he will play Konstantin, an aspiring playwright who is smitten with Nina (Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke).
Indira Varma, another GoT alum, will play his mother, the celebrated actress Arkadina, with Tom Rhys Harries as Trigorin, who steals Nina away from Konstantin.
Monks, whose right side has been paralysed since a spinal cord tumour was removed when he was 11, is thrilled to be playing an able-bodied character and alongside such a stellar cast.

The year 2019 was a particularly good year for Brits in Hollywood, culminating in half of the Primetime Emmys heading to the other side of the pond with the likes of Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Succession creator Jesse Armstrong winning big.
British and Irish writers have always done well in the U.S. both in television and on the feature side, but the last few years have been particularly kind to those making the 6,000-mile trek to Tinseltown, from The Mentalist and Gotham’s Bruno Heller to Saving Mr Banks and Terra Nova writer Kelly Marcel and Catastrophe co-creator Sharon Horgan.

Just like all the major slasher franchises, the Halloween series has been all over the place. Most start off strong, like the 1978 original, but by the middle, they’re running out of ideas and try, desperately, to inject some fresh blood into a dying property. Friday the 13th tried it when they swapped main villain Jason Voorhees out for a spurned ambulance driver in the fifth installment, A New Beginning, Freddy Krueger pursued a Dream Child for a few films and, for Halloween 5, Jamie Lloyd was almost the new killer.
As we’re all aware, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers had the second-best ending of any movie in the franchise. Dr. Loomis breaking down and shrieking “No!” over and over again after seeing a blood-covered Jamie Lloyd wielding a pair of scissors, repeating the cycle of violence that will forever curse the Myers bloodline, is devastating every time.

Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke is all set to torch London – in a good way – with her West End stage debut in Anya Reiss’ adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull. The former Daenerys Targaryen will play Nina in director Jamie Lloyd’s staging of the Chekhov classic at London’s Playhouse Theatre.
Previews begin March 11, with an opening night set for March 19 (the engagement runs through May 30).
“I am over the moon to be playing Nina in Jamie Lloyd’s interpretation of The Seagull,” Clarke said in a statement. “I’ve long been a fan of the singular vision he brings to each of his masterful productions and the way he approaches classical texts. We are so lucky to be working with Anya’s brilliant adaptation, as she brings a light touch of modernity to this beautifully crafted play.

A deleted scene from Halloween H20 revealed an early intention to keep Jamie Lloyd canon after the series brought back Laurie Strode.
Until this seventh entry in the long-running slasher saga, Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie had been absent from the franchise since its second installment. The third was narratively unconnected and by the time the fourth was in production, she’d established herself beyond the horror movies with which she began her career, and so declined to return.
In her place was created the character of Laurie’s daughter Jamie, while Laurie was written out by mention of her having died in a car crash. As Michael Myers’ niece, Jamie became relentlessly hunted by him, and is central to the events of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, before being brutally killed early in Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers.

Jessica Chastain is to make her West End theater debut in a new production of A Doll’s House.
The Zero Dark Thirty star will star as Nora Helmer in Henrik Ibsen’s play, adapted by Frank McGuiness. In the play, Helmer, confronts her husband Torvald with her own brutal realization that by marrying she has moved from her father’s dollhouse into yet another situation of economic dependency.
The play was originally adapted by McGuiness for Broadway in 1997 by Bill Kenwright. A Doll’s House will run at the Playhouse Theatre in London from June 10 until September 5 2020. It marks Chastain’s first stage role since she starred in Henry James’s The Heiress on Broadway in 2012.
It is part of a season of plays directed by Jamie Lloyd, which also includes James McAvoy in Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac, adapted by Martin Crimp.

A new Broadway season is gearing up, and there are currently nine productions of plays set to open this fall. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tony Awards? Below, we recap the plot of each play as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative types, the opening, and (where applicable) closing dates.
“Betrayal” (opens September 5; closes December 8)
In the third Broadway revival of Harold Pinter’s 1978 award-winning play, the story charts a compelling seven-year romance, thrillingly captured in reverse chronological order.
The original Broadway production received Tony nominations for star Blythe Danner and director Peter Hall. This production is coming in after a successful run in London’s West End earlier this year. The cast includes Emmy nominee Tom Hiddleston, Zawe Ashton, SAG winner Charlie Cox, and is directed by Laurence Olivier Award winner Jamie Lloyd.

The elegant economy of language with which a trio of romantically entangled souls express themselves in Harold Pinter's 1978 infidelity drama, Betrayal, allowing for unspoken emotions to subtly work their way to the surface, is beautifully enhanced by the production elements of director Jamie Lloyd's riveting London production transferring to Broadway with its three exceptional stars, Tom Hiddleston, Zawe Ashton and Charlie Cox.

‘Betrayal’ Broadway Review: Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Cox & Zawe Ashton In Pinter’s Affair To Remember
Secret love shacks, or love flats as the case may be, notwithstanding, no affair is an island built for two – there’s always at least a third person in the mix, typically considered the betrayed. In Jamie Lloyd’s masterful revival of Harold Pinter’s Betrayal – one is tempted to call it a reinvention, so deeply and definitely urgent is his take – three of the ever-shifting betrayers and betrayees occupy the stage at all times, one or another bearing silent witness as the other two enact an affair’s all-too-familiar scenes of lies, transgressions, excitement and the love that, at least fleetingly, prompts it all.
With a starry, pitch- and picture-perfect cast imported from the smash London staging – Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Cox and Zawe Ashton – Lloyd’s staging of Pinter’s 1978 masterpiece, opening tonight at Broadway’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, Betrayal feels at once classic and altogether contemporary, a seamless weaving together of elements,...

It’s one of the great “what ifs?” in horror cinema: what if Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris) had gone on to become the next Haddonfield killer after the shocking ending to Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers? Dressed in a clown costume, standing at the top of the stairs, bloody scissors in hand after stabbing her foster mother, Jamie seemed like a young Michael Myers reincarnated. If she wasn’t ready to take over for her uncle, she surely seemed ready to help him hack and slash his way through another Halloween. But like so many of the great “what ifs?” in the Marvel comic book series What If, the murderous Jamie Lloyd was more of a Halloween night one-shot than a fully realized story.

King Kong, Pretty Woman: The Musical and The Cher Show took their final bows on Broadway last week, all three bucking a late-summer downward box office trend with some last-chance ticket-buyers.
In general, though, Broadway box office was down about 5% from the previous week, with one fewer show on the roster and a more-often-than-not slip in most shows’ receipts. In total, Broadway grossed $31,972,753 with 28 productions for the week ending August 18. Total attendance was down about 4% to 258,918.
New to the roster is Betrayal, the hit British production starring Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Cox and Zawe Ashton, all making their Broadway debuts. Directed and produced by Jamie Lloyd, the Harold Pinter classic began previews August 14 and opens Sept. 5 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater. For its first four previews, Betrayal took in a promising $420,907, about 80% of potential, with attendance of 3,769 at 91% of capacity.

Jamie Lloyd has had an even tougher time in the Halloween franchise than her mother. After anchoring the series for several installments, Laurie Strode’s daughter was abruptly killed very early on in Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers. There were narrative reasons for this, of course, but it turns out that there are even more prominent factors contributing to actress Danielle Harris being erased from the franchise.
Despite wanting to reprise her role in the film, her character was quickly killed off to make room for other protagonists. One reason why is that the producers reportedly refused to pay the amount she requested. Harris also wasn’t a big fan of the script, much like the rest of the fanbase. The performer was then replaced onscreen by J.C Brandy and Jamie Lloyd was killed off almost immediately in the movie.
The studio didn’t think the character was necessary anymore following childbirth,...

Horror savants love spending time in the place where their favorite slashers were filmed, and now, some lucky fans are going to get the opportunity to live in the exact house where Jamie Lloyd lived with her family while trying to avoid the dangerous Michael Myers. That’s right, folks: the residence that served as one of the main settings of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers is now officially on sale.
Following the disappointing third installment, which is the only film in the series not to feature the legendary masked killer as the primary antagonist, the iconic franchise returned to its roots with the next movie. The psychotic killer was brought back with a vengeance, though this time he was fixated on pursuing his young niece Jamie Lloyd, who was played by acclaimed scream queen Danielle Harris in her onscreen debut.

Last year, horror fans showed up in droves to see Michael Myers return in David Gordon Green’s Halloween. The slasher flick’s success, marked by critical praise and a staggering box office intake, renewed interest in the franchise in general, with many people diving back into the fascinating and troubled production history faced by many of the films.
The official website Halloween Movies have recently directed their attention toward the numerous scenes excised from Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers. Notorious for its behind the scenes issues, the fifth Halloween movie had many sequences cut or even completely reshot to appease producers and censors, including an alternate opening featuring the supernatural revival of a deceased Michael Myers.

In many ways, “Velvet Buzzsaw” never should have happened for Zawe Ashton. A literal art house movie, Dan Gilroy’s latest explores the intersection of art and commerce as members of the L.A. art scene, from Jake Gyllenhaal’s critic to Rene Russo’s gallery owner, find themselves haunted by a series of paintings. Trippy and original, with bursts of gore and humor, the film has provoked a wide range of reactions since it landed on Netflix two weeks ago. But there is one thing everyone seems to agree on: It announces Ashton as a major screen presence to watch.
Born in London to a Ugandan mother and British father, Ashton has been acting since she was six, when she enrolled at the Anna Scher Theatre School, the same institution where Daniel Kaluuya got his start. She has earned acclaimed for performing slam poetry and writing plays such as...

Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers isn’t exactly considered a franchise high point by fans or critics, with the feature coming out to lousy reviews and earning the lowest global box office gross of any Halloween film to date. But like every entry in the long-running slasher saga, the 1989 flick has its defenders, and even those who don’t care for the movie may be interested to find out what Compass International Pictures and Trancas International Films unearth from its production.
The official Halloween Twitter account has announced that the search is underway for “lost” footage from The Revenge of Michael Myers, be it uncut kill scenes or the unused “Dr. Death” opening. To elaborate on the latter, the finished cut of Halloween 5 begins with a severely wounded Michael Myers washing up at the home of a hermit and falling into a coma on October 31st, 1988. We count down the 13 best ass-kicking leading ladies to survive horror movies.
The term "final girl" is now as ubiquitous in horror culture as "slasher" and "jump scare." The phrase was first coined by Carol J. Clover’s Men, Women, and Chainsaws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film, and it refers to a heroine (or "survivor girl") who can be defined by several features: most obviously she is the last one standing after most or all of her friends have been sent to that big boiler room in the sky; she also is traditionally young, and has remained virginal and pure in the face of vice—making her far too innocent for a chainsaw’s sullying touch; and finally she must appropriate a masculine object to assert herself above the monster (i.e. pick up Jason’s machete and stab him right between the hockey pads!).
