Joe Biden will hold a press conference at the White House on Wednesday, the day before his presidency hits the one-year mark.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki made the announcement at the daily briefing on Friday. “The president looks forward to speaking directly to the American people,” she said.
The solo press conference will be his first solo press conference at the White House since March 25. According to Mark Knoller of CBS News, Biden also has had five solo news conferences on foreign trips and two joint press conferences at the White House with foreign leaders. News organizations and the White House Correspondents’ Association have been pressing the White House for more access, but the administration has noted that the president takes questions from the reporters, multiple times during a given week. But reporters say that those more informal encounters, often with shouted questions, don’t compare to the...

Besides moderator Susan Page losing control early and that fly on Mike Pence’s head, if there is anything everyone can agree on about tonight’s first and only vice presidential debate of the 2020 campaign, it is that the 2024 campaign has begun.
Between Sen. Kamala Harris and incumbent Mike Pence, one or both of them may very well be in the race for the White House in four years, regardless if Donald Trump or Joe Biden wins next month.
As for 2020, well, besides all the attention that the black fly on Pence’s white hair attracted online, tonight was another wasted opportunity of talking points and over talk in front of a nation that has seen over 210,000 Americans die from the coronavirus, a hobbled economy and partisan chaos in Washington, D.C.
Overall, the 90-minute showdown in Salt Lake City between the would-be VP and the pendulous current VP, who had an apparent eye ailment,...

CBSViacom’s layoffs this week also impacted CBS News and CBS-owned affiliates, the latest fallout to hit news media amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The layoffs were said to make up a single digit percentage of the news division — reportedly 5%, or around 75 employees. They follow recent staff cuts at outlets such as The Atlantic, BuzzFeed and Vox Media.
CBS News president Susan Zirinsky wrote in a memo on Wednesday that “no one could have foreseen the economic fallout from the pandemic coming on top of the cost savings initiatives already underway from the merger of CBS and Viacom. As a result, we have scrutinized our entire business model, our budgets, and what we learned in news gathering during the last months. We are not alone; media companies and businesses all over the country are re-organizing and developing new operating models.”

Top national reporters at CBS News were among the hundreds of ViacomCBS staffers laid off this week. A source with knowledge of the layoffs told TheWrap the cuts affected 300 people, of whom 75 were from the news division, “including some senior producers and reporters at top shows.”
Journalist Yashar Ali named veteran White House reporter Mark Knoller, Pentagon reporter Cami McCormick and correspondent Dean Reynolds in a series of tweets about the layoffs, which also affected local CBS affiliates around the country.
Knoller responded on Twitter, “Thanks to all for the many kind words. Much appreciated. For the time being, I’m still on the job, still keeping count on the president. Will see what happens. Thanks again.”

Similar to the response garnered by the news of local reporters being cut, journalists were quick to praise Knoller and the others on Twitter.

President Trump has been trying to discredit the Justice Department’s investigation into his campaign’s relationship with Russia for most of his presidency. His attempts to do so have mostly come through his Twitter account and yelling over Marine One on the White House lawn. But when Attorney General William Barr took over the Justice Department in February, it quickly became clear federal law enforcement resources would be used to go after the people who conducted the probe.

President Trump invited Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-ny) and presumptive House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-ca) to the Oval Office on Tuesday to talk about the long-proposed border wall. It didn’t go well. As a wan, mute Mike Pence looked on, Trump, Schumer and Pelosi argued about everything from the legislative process, to whether border wall construction has started (it hasn’t), to the outcome of the midterms, which Trump sees a little differently than the rest of the nation.
“Excuse me, did we win the Senate?” Trump protested.

Washington — The American flags flying at the White House returned to full staff on Monday, less than 48 hours after the death of Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) and well before memorial services later this week.
The flag was lowered to half staff following McCain’s death on Saturday, and President Donald Trump made a statement on Twitter.
“My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!” he wrote on Saturday night.

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump presented a smiling, united front on Friday as they welcomed Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his wife, Lucy, to the White House.
After the two couples exchanged pleasantries and smiled for photos at the South Portico, the Trumps invited the Turnbulls inside, where they had lunch together and the two leaders met and later gave a joint press conference.
The first lady appeared to be in higher spirits Friday than in recent weeks following allegations that the president had affairs with porn star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal...
