Daniel P. Jordan(1938-2024)
He was a historian who presided over Monticello for 23 years, serving as executive director and then president of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, the group which has owned the Charlottesville estate since 1923.
He was an athlete at the University of Mississippi, playing forward on the basketball team and pitching for baseball teams that won back-to-back Southeastern Conference titles. He studied history and English and trained in Army ROTC. He graduated from Ole Miss with a bachelor's degree and a master's in history. He then served as an Army infantryman in South Korea and Western Europe. He taught history classes while overseas, and continued his education at the University of Virginia, where he studied under Jefferson scholar Merrill D. Peterson and received his PhD.
