Halle Berry has her eyes on the future. The Oscar-winning actor, who just released her directorial debut “Bruised” (in which she also stars), isn’t content with the ground she has already broken. Next up: She’d like to work with rising superstar Zendaya. “I have a plan,” she says. “I would love to play her mother. I have an idea because I think she’s the future.”
Berry also has advice for Zoë Kravitz, who will be playing Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman in Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated “The Batman” with Robert Pattinson. “I’ll just tell her, get ready, they might come for you – but don’t let that affect your interpretation about who she thinks Catwoman might be,” she says. “I personally think she’s going to be a wonderful Catwoman.”

Halle Berry, the sole Black woman to win the best actress Oscar in 93 years, has unveiled her directorial debut film “Bruised” at the AFI Film Festival, showcasing a commitment and skill that only the very best actors in the world can harness.
Written by debut screenwriter Michelle Rosenfarb, “Bruised” tells the story of Jackie Justice, a disgraced Mma fighter that seeks redemption once the son that she abandoned reenters her life.
In probably her most challenging and authoritative work as an actress since “Monster’s Ball” (2001), Berry shows that at 55 years old, she still harnesses the talent and enthusiasm to take on any role or story she’s excited about. Fearless as she dives into a character, Berry explores Jackie’s physicality and the profession of Mma fighting itself. This is something the actors’ branch tends to appreciate. No female director has ever directed themselves to an Oscar nomination for acting.

The sports film, in general, is fairly formulaic irrespective of gender. It’s one of the more reliable genres, able to entertain even if the beats are standard operating procedure. When it comes to sports films featuring women, there are slight distinctions, namely in what the sport is and what role men play within it. For Halle Berry, making her directorial debut with the Mma film “Bruised,” she wanted to make the movie female-heavy, both in front of and behind the camera, and it creates pockets of distinction in which it stands out from the sports features that have come before it.
Jackie Justice (Berry) was once a top Mma fighter for the UFC. But when she jumped out of a cage during a match, the disgrace ruined her career. Four years later, Jackie is moving from job to job with little to show for it outside of an abusive boyfriend/manager,...

Halle Berry fought to get “Bruised” made. The movie, a labor of love (if not necessarily of originality) about an ex-Mma fighter who goes from scrubbing toilets to standing proud for her estranged young son, is all about proving oneself to the world, and so it’s fitting that Berry spent several years whipping the project into existence. Despite making history at the Oscars 20 years ago, Berry has struggled to find the kind of roles that challenge her. So she took matters into her own hands.
With “Bruised,” Berry responded to a script about a 21-year-old white girl and had it rewritten for an indefinitely older woman, then pitched the project to skeptical parties around town before ultimately stepping behind the camera to direct it herself. The result — which debuted as a “work in progress” at the 2020 Toronto Film Festival, was acquired by Netflix and underwent another year’s...

The American Film Institute said Tuesday that it has added the world premieres of Apple Original Films’ Swan Song, starring two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, and Halle Berry’s directorial debut Bruised from Netflix to this year’s AFI Fest lineup.
When Netflix picked up Bruised at the Toronto Film Festival last year, the pic was in its unfinished form, and its debut in November will be the first time it’s being shown to moviegoers in polished form.
Swan Song and Bruised will screen in-person at the Tcl Chinese Theatre on Friday, November 12, and Saturday, November 13, respectively.
Swan Song reps Oscar winner Benjamin Cleary’s (Stutterer) feature directorial debut and follows Ali as a man diagnosed with a terminal illness who is presented with an alternative solution by his doctor (Glenn Close) to shield his family from grief. The pic also stars Naomie Harris, Awkwafina and Adam Beach. Cleary wrote the screenplay.

With her directorial debut Bruised having just been acquired by Netflix in a $19m deal, Halle Berry took time out this weekend to reflect on her 30-year career, and on changing attitudes toward race and gender in Hollywood, during an ’In Conversation’ event at TIFF.
Berry remains the only African American to have won a best actress Oscar, a fact that dismays and upsets her. “I really thought that might mean that very soon after that night, other women of colour, black women, would stand beside me.

Netflix is about to knock out competitors for the worldwide distribution rights to Halle Berry’s directorial debut.
Berry’s “Bruised,” an Mma drama that is screening as a work-in-progress at the Toronto Film Festival, is stitching up a sale close to $20 million, insiders familiar with negotiations said. Endeavor Content is repping filmmakers in the deal, with Sierra/Affinity assisting on international.
The director also stars in this tale of a washed-up Mma fighter struggling for redemption as both an athlete and a mother. Berry directed from a script by Michelle Rosenfarb. Though the film will screen virtually on Saturday from Toronto, it’s unclear when the picture will lock and deliver to the streaming service.
Berry was the cover star of Variety‘s TIFF preview issue, wherein she discussed her journey to the screen — and the two broken ribs that almost halted production on her big jump to the director’s chair.
