"The Battery" (2012) Jeremy Gardner's "The Battery" is about as unassuming as a horror film can get -- a lo-fi, decidedly bro-centric entry to the genre that stars Gardner and Adam Cronheim as ex-baseball players whose lives have been uprooted by the inconvenience of a zombie apocalypse. Set against the backdrop of rural New England and featuring hordes of surprisingly persistent undead, Ben (Gardner) and Mickey (Cronheim) bump heads as they attempt to survive in an increasingly unfriendly world. But when their nomadic lifestyle is interrupted by a mysterious voice on a walkie-talkie, Mickey and Ben’s journey takes a dark turn as the two find themselves trapped inside of their car, surrounded on all sides by the deadly creatures. Rumored to be made for an astonishingly low $6,000, Gardner's tense direction and healthy doses of humor make this film a claustrophobic zombie movie with some surprisingly effective scares. I was on board with The Battery very early on. In all honesty, all it really took to rope me in was the unveiling of this badass, old school poster. I looked around on the net for reviews, but information was sparse. When the film was released on VOD/Digital, I jumped at the opportunity to watch it. I wasn’t expecting much from a no-budget zombie film. Little did I expect that it would secure a spot on my list of the best films of the year in 2013. I did what I could to promote the film, and let people know that this was something truly special. I managed to get a few people to watch it, and then it started getting more popular, as it screened at the 2013 Toronto After Dark Film Festival. People I had assured that they Needed to see this film, such as Jeff and Heather,...

It’s impossible for me to hide the fact that Scream Factory is one of my favorite boutique media labels. As far as content goes, they give me the type of films that I really want to see on the Blu-ray format. They’ve had a strong first couple of years, and I see no signs of them slowing down anytime soon. Two of the biggest… neigh, The two biggest releases of the 2014 Halloween Seasons is coming from these guys. I’m speaking, of course, about the Director’s Cut of Nightbreed, as well as the Complete Halloween Collection. But you’ve already heard about those, and pre-ordered them, right? Well, here is their entire fall(Sept/Oct… And some November, cause shut up.) lineup, in case a few have slipped by you.

Former baseball teammates with opposite outlooks on their dead new world, Ben and Mickey try to survive the living dead and each other in The Battery, the directorial debut from Jeremy Gardner (who also writes and stars). With Scream Factory releasing The Battery on Blu-ray and DVD this week, I chatted with Jeremy and co-star/producer Adam Cronheim about making a memorable zombie movie on a micro-budget.
With zombies being so prevalent in pop culture right now, what angle did you take with The Battery to differentiate it from the horde?
Jeremy Gardner: Zombies tend to go big. They tend to have these broad, cultural relevancies, especially with [George A.] Romero’s themes of militarism, race relations, and consumerism. I wanted to focus on the specific human psyche. To watch one person’s mind slowly wilt under the pressures of the zombie apocalypse. So I figured I would just do both...

Have you seen The Battery yet? Surely you've heard of it. It's that one anti-zombie zombie movie everyone's talking about on the Information Superhighway (fancy way of saying "Internet."). No hyperbole here -- it's the coolest and most unconventional zombie movie I've seen in years. The Battery stars Jeremy Gardner -- who also wrote, directed and co-produced the film -- and Adam Cronheim (co-producer) as two baseball players stuck in a zombie apocalypse. Instead of the usual zombie attack after zombie attack, the film spends a majority of its running time focusing on the banter between the two -- chances are high they will kill each other before a zombie does. This is one of the reasons why why we love it -- it's a new take on...

For the week of September 16th, horror and sci-fi fans have a multitude of new and familiar title releases to choose from- everything from new indie horror movies to classic films getting an HD overhaul to a handful of TV series making their Blu-ray and DVD debuts.
To get everyone ready for the upcoming Fall TV season, this week sees the home debuts of the most recent seasons of Grimm, Hannibal, Arrow, Sleepy Hollow and From Dusk Till Dawn and classic horror fans should be happy to see HD releases for a few favorites as well, like Dark Sky Film’s 40th anniversary edition of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Eraserhead from Criterion, Anchor Bay’s 30th anniversary edition Blu-ray of Silent Night, Deadly Night and Sony’s special edition gift set for Ghostbusters/Ghostbusters II, which also contains an awesome Slimer collectible that would be a great addition to any fans’ collection.

Creating movie zombies is dirty, and possibly vomit-inducing, work. That’s the main takeaway from the exclusive slightly Nsfw clip you can see below, which details how the folks responsible for the terrific microbudget horror film, The Battery, made their undead.
Written and directed by first-time filmmaker Jeremy Gardner, The Battery stars Gardner and Adam Cronheim as a pair of bickering baseball players attempting to survive a zombie apocalypse in a leafy but inevitably blood-drenched New England. Jeremy Gardner's The Battery arrives on DVD and Blu-ray from Scream Factory September 16th. If you didn't catch this zombie film during its VOD run, I highly recommend giving this one a look. More character study than zombie film, it's a refreshing indie film with a voice that I really dig. Special features were revealed today, you can check them out below. Two former baseball players, Ben (Jeremy Gardner) and Mickey (Adam Cronheim), cut an aimless path across a desolate New England.

I’ve been waiting for this to happen for a long time. I rented/bought the digital copy of Jeremy Gardner’s The Battery a long time ago, and have been raving about it since. It was announced recently that Shout! Factory would be bringing the title home, with one of its modern horror acquisitions under the Scream Factory Banner. Details have been scarce, including when we could expect the release to hit shelves, but Scream Factory have sent out a news blast today, detailing the release, its date, the extras and disc specifics. The title will be available beginning September 16th. And, believe it or not, it is a dollar cheaper to pre-order the title at Shout’s website, than it is to do so on Amazon. You should totally do that, so click here to do so. Below is all of the details you need about the release,...

My favorite horror film of 2013 which almost no one saw? That would have to be The Battery, a micro-budgeted tale of two bickering ex-baseball players trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. Written and directed by the magnificently bearded Jeremy Gardner — who also stars alongside Adam Cronheim — the result is a reminder that you don’t need a whole lot of money to make an atmospheric and character-rich undead flick. In fact, all you really you need is $6,000 and a baseball bat (okay, and a ball and a glove).

More eye candy has been rolling in from Afm at a nice steady pace, and next up is the sales art for the ultra low-budget zombie movie The Battery (review), written and directed by and starring Connecticut native Jeremy Gardner.
The film follows Ben (Gardner) and Mickey (Adam Cronheim), two former baseball players with clashing personalities, as they trek through a bleak landscape overrun with the walking dead searching for a glimmer of hope.
With the emphasis placed less on the zombies and more on the dynamic between the two diametrically opposite main characters, The Battery is an incredibly ambitious film that defies convention and is loaded with emotion and a sense of sentimentality not often seen in your traditional zombie flick. It’s also proof positive that a great movie is made through passion and dedication, not a huge budget or crazy special effects.

Stalled
Written by Dan Palmer
Directed by Christian James
UK, 2013
Being trapped in a room full of zombies should be a bit more harrowing than the UK horror comedy Stalled would suggest. In the film, a hapless maintenance worker/janitor (Dan Palmer) gets trapped in the women’s lavatory during a company Christmas party. Things are exacerbated further when a slew of zombies start invading the loo, at which point the janitor realizes a woman named Heather (Antonia Bernath) is trapped with him a few stalls down.
With its low production qualities and lack of real story, Stalled doesn’t make for a very tense or scary zombie flick. Instead, the film functions more as a journey of introspection for the main character, with the faceless Heather as the pseudo-psychiatrist who helps him realize his emotional reclusion and personal failings. It’s all very schmaltzy, indeed (much like a bottle...

Toronto-based Raven Banner has acquired international rights to Jeremy Gardner’s elevated genre hit The Battery.
The film tells the story of two former baseball players whose personalities clash as they traverse the rural back roads of a post-plague New England teeming with the undead.
“The Battery is a smart-witted and thrilling take on a subgenre we all thought was overused and on the wane but revived with an intelligent approach,” said Raven Banner’s manager of acquisitions, Annick Mahnert.
Managing partners James Fler and Michael Paszt brokered the deal on behalf of Raven Banner with producers Adam Cronheim and Christian Stella.

Friday the 13th is coming soon and, for us horror fans, that means one thing only: watching horror films as a salute to the icon that is Jason Voorhees (or is it another Voorhees?). However, this year you could take it one step further by attending a summer camp sleepover event hosted by The Awesome Fest, which features a six horror films, including Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp, and The Burning. The opening day of Macabro 2013, Mexico City's annual horror film festival, kicked off with a screening of The Battery, with director/star Jeremy Gardner and co-star Adam Cronheim in person. No need for more. One cleverly funny zombie movie (with a great soundtrack) and a couple of energetic and very kind guys (Gardner and Cronheim) were more than enough for a memorable evening at Cineteca Nacional (the Cinematheque). The crowd started gathering around 5 Pm, more than two hours before the showing. It was a sold out event but some people didn't know that and soon the festival's organization became a little messy. There was just too much demand (some members of the press had to leave), confirming that Macabro keeps growing as a festival and requires...

A micro-budget (and we mean micro) drama, the film follows two baseball players - Ben and Mickey - as they traverse the New England landscape in the wake of a zombie apocalypse.
Gardner pulls multiple duties on the film as he stars in the tale alongside actor-producer Adam Cronheim. ShockTillYouDrop.com spoke with the duo about the creation of their indie effort. Check out our discussion inside.
The Battery is now available on VOD; if you're in Los Angeles, you can see the film on the big screen tonight at Cinefamily.

Zombie movies. They're here to stay. They've never really, truly gone away. And at this point, whenever a new entry in an undead cinematic cycle comes along, all you can hope is that a filmmaker is bringing something new to the party.
Enter writer-director-actor Jeremy Gardner with The Battery, a film that played to Fantasia Film Festival audiences, but is widely available for you to rent or purchase if you venture to iTunes. And I highly recommend you choose one of those two options.
The Battery is a buddy movie first, a road trip movie second and a zombie film last. It's clever, honest and thoroughly engaging. While the scenario Gardner - along with producer/co-star Adam Cronheim - presents isn't anything new, it's the characters that help this micro-budget gem transcend the usual zombie fodder.

The Battery (2012)
Is there anything more American than baseball and zombies? Sure, that’s not how you’re normally used to hearing such a question, but since we’ve learned that neither applies or pie are truly American in their origin, we need to replace it with something. Anymore, it seems, zombies fit the bill fairly well.
I imagine asking myself, “what two things have never been put together on film,” and then I realize what writer and director Jeremy Gardner must have realized at some point when he developed the idea for making The Battery. This is a film that combines these two very American things, baseball and zombies, doing so in a simplistic way that preserves the core essence of both. You won’t find any rage-induced superhuman zombies or off-the-wall pseudo-scientific explanations for the cause here.
Gardner sets out to tell a story about survival, not unlike that of The Walking Dead,...

When we horror fans take note of a new low-budget zombie movie (and we frequently do), our praise is often directed towards the film's novel hook, energetic presentation, or impressive splatter effects. (All three if we're really lucky.) But now comes a new low-budget zombie movie that's not all that novel (indeed it's virtually plotless), not very energetic at all (it's actually pretty talky), and it's not packing all that many zombie kills, truth be told.
So what's my point? That the $6,000 New England feature called The Battery is just another tiresome and generic piece of indie zombie foolishness? Nope. If that were the case I probably wouldn't be reviewing the flick. (Who wants to bash a $6,000 movie?) But it's important to note that, while The Battery is most assuredly an impressive debut and a very interesting little movie, it is in no way a rock 'em, chomp 'em gore-fest...

We recently featured The Battery in our Indie Spotlight, giving readers a look at the indie zombie film. The movie has been a hit on iTunes and is part of their zombie movie sale this week. To help celebrate, they’ve given us an exclusive clip to share with Daily Dead readers.
“Two former baseball players, Ben (Jeremy Gardner) and Mickey (Adam Cronheim), cut an aimless path across a desolate New England. They stick to the back roads and forests to steer clear of the shambling corpses that patrol the once bustling cities and towns. In order to survive, they must overcome the stark differences in each other’s personalities—Ben embraces an increasingly feral, lawless, and nomadic lifestyle—while Mickey is unable to accept the harsh realities of the new world. Mickey refuses to engage in Ben’s violent games and longs for the creature comforts he once took for granted.

On a budget of only $6,000, filmmaker Jeremy Gardner created the award-winning horror comedy The Battery, a unique zombie epic that pits two former baseball players (played by Gardner and Adam Cronheim) against the living dead – and each other – in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. The film just made its online premiere at iTunes, and you can watch the trailer below. Described as “more than your average post-apocalyptic survival movie,” The Battery has racked up a ton of praise, winning Audience Awards at Imagine Film Festival Amsterdam (beating the Evil Dead remake), Scotland's Dead by Dawn Festival and Mauvais Genre in France, and nabbed the “Best Zombie Film” title at Brazil's Fantaspoa. You can learn more about it at The Battery official site, and rent the entire film on iTunes. Here's the trailer! The Battery (Official Trailer)...

The ultra low-budget zombie movie The Battery (review), written and directed by and starring Connecticut native Jeremy Gardner, is making its VOD bow on June 4th! Consider this your friendly reminder!

Another year winds down, and it's time to reflect on the good, the bad, and the ugly of 2012's horror offerings. We're giving you ten different lists this time, and per usual they come in a variety of formats, each reflecting the unique styles of our writers. We've also compiled them to come up with the year's overall winners and losers.

We want to hear what you thought of the year in which we dodged the Mayan apocalypse but find our beloved genre facing some dark days as violent movies, video games, TV shows, etc., are coming under increased scrutiny following recent events.
But back to the matter at hand; we averaged out the top and bottom five vote getters on everyone's lists, and here are the results:

Since the strange plague began, two former baseball players have been stuck living the life of nomads and scavengers, scouring abandoned homes for resources and sleeping with one eye open. Armed with a bat and a beard, Jeremy Gardner not only directed and wrote The Battery, but also stars in his film as catcher-turned-ultimate-zombie-destroyer, Ben, opposite Adam Cronheim, as Mickey. This is by no means a perfect film and in some aspects relies on its own soundtrack to break the monotony of its characters' travels. However, I found myself enjoying the film, even in spite of my personal lack of desire to invest in a film that screams arthouse at ear-splitting volumes. Though not without its pretensions, it is a well-executed film in many ways and as a first-time cinematography credit for Christian Stella, it's also beautifully shot. As a whole, for Garne's directorial debut, this is a great start.
