Has there ever been a rise and fall quite as swift and dramatic as that of Jonathan Majors? 2023 started off as a killer year for Majors. After years as an up-and-comer, he had three films set to debut within the first three months of the year. His two big studio films, Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania and Creed III, seemed poised to make him a real-deal movie star, while his indie film, Magazine Dreams, was going to serve as an acting showcase.
Indeed, when the film debuted last January at Sundance, many believed his tortured, Travis Bickle-like role would win him an Oscar nomination (I was one of them in my review). His character, Killian Maddox, a wanna-be bodybuilder with serious anger issues, was a distinct creation for him and director Elijah Bynum. The movie quickly sold to Fox Searchlight, and a December 2023 release date was set. Everyone assumed...

The collectible makers at Funko have created a large line of Pop figures based on Hocus Pocus 2. There are, of course, all three Sanderson sisters, but also the new characters Cassie, Becca, Izzy, and Gilbert. Surprisingly, a new Billy Butcherson figure isn’t in the line-up. But there is The Witch Mother – and while the other Hocus Pocus 2 POPs will be available wherever POPs are sold, the Witch Mother figure will only be available through the Funko website. So if you want to get your hands on this one, head over to Funko.com before all the Witch Mother figures are sold!
ThatHashtagShow informs, “The Witch Mother plays a brief but significant role in the Disney feature Hocus Pocus 2. The character, portrayed by Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham, meets the Sanderson sisters when they’re still children. Sensing witchy potential in young Winifred, the Witch Mother gives the sisters their iconic spellbook.

Magazine Dreams is a drama and second feature directed by Elijah Bynum, which stars Jonathan Majors, Haley Bennett, Taylor Paige, and Harrison Page
The film opens with a beautiful shot of Killian Maddox (Majors) showing off his chiseled physique under an orange hue of lights as if he’s at a bodybuilding competition. This is overlaid with a voiceover of him having a discussion with his therapist about his erratic behavior after a stint in the hospital. Killian takes working out very seriously and takes steroids to achieve the perfect body. He seems to be on the Asd spectrum and writes letters to his favorite bodybuilder Brad Vanderhorne (Michael O’Hearn) in hopes of hearing from him. He has no friends, only his grandfather (Page) whom he takes care of. There is Jessica (Bennett), a woman at the local grocery store who he has a crush on. He asks her on a date,...

For years, there was talk about making a sequel to the 1993 cult favorite Hocus Pocus. After spending some time in development hell, Hocus Pocus 2 finally made it into production recently and is now set to be released through the Disney+ streaming service on September 30th. Unfortunately, when the sequel did get made, it happened to be at a time when the first film’s cast member Thora Birch was too busy to participate.
According to Collider, Birch’s character Dani Dennison was originally supposed to have a prominent role in Hocus Pocus 2, where she would have teamed up with a group of teenagers to battle the returning trio of witches, the Sanderson Sisters. But there was a scheduling issue – and speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Birch told them she was “dismayed” she had to miss out on the movie.
Birch said, “I was just a little dismayed I wasn’t able to make it.

Sundance Film Festival: London has revealed that “Zola” and “Coda” will be among the 2021 lineup, when the festival returns to Picturehouse Central next month.
“Coda” — an acronym meaning “Child of Deaf Adults” — features Marlee Matlin (“The West Wing”) and 19-year-old Emilia Jones (“Locke & Key”) navigating their relationship, while “Zola” is based on a 148-tweet viral Twitter thread from 2015 by Aziah “Zola” Wells. It stars Taylor Paige (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) and Riley Keough (“Max Max: Fury Road”) and will close the 4-day festival.
Edgar Wright’s rockumentary “The Sparks Brothers,” described as a “musical odyssey,” opens the festival on July 29.
Other feature film offerings, which have been selected from the longer line-up shown at the Sundance Film Festival, include “The Nest,” starring Jude Law (“Sherlock Holmes”), animation “Cryptozoo,” which features Lake Bell (“BoJack Horseman”) and Michael Cera (“Arrested Development”), and documentary “Writing With Fire,” about a female-run Indian newspaper, which...

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom entered the awards race with impressive credentials. One of two films last year featuring the late Chadwick Boseman, George C. Wolfe’s Netflix film also reunites star Viola Davis with the work of playwright August Wilson, a winning combination that landed her the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 2016’s Fences.
This time, the intimate setting is a Chicago studio in 1927, where blues singer Ma Rainey (Davis) and her band prepare for what will be a fraught recording session.
Coleman Domingo, who plays blues musician Cutler, explains during the film’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film award-season event that Wilson’s 1982 drama still has much to say about today. Referring to the assembled talent, he says, “Everyone here has been gifted with the tremendous responsibility to tell the story of Ma Rainey and her band and the blues. The blues is America. Murtada Elfadl reporting from Sundance
Maybe it was the 10th time director Janicza Bravo used a freeze frame to reframe the wild weekend tale she’s telling in Zola, when I knew I loved her movie. The freeze frames until then were used to stop the narrative for a pithy or funny observation by our narrator Zola (Taylor Paige), twitter reply style. But this time we were getting a whole new perspective from another character. It was delectable, hilarious and ghastly. I’d say the same for Zola.
You all remember the infamous 2015 Twitter thread that started with the classic opening lines:
Y’all wanna hear a story about why me & this bitch here fell out? It’s kind of long but full of suspense?”
Well they went and made a movie out of it...
