Having released over 30 albums and sold over 20 million records worldwide, Jimmy Buffett is among the world’s best-selling music artists. Director Paul Dale and co-writer Dylan McGovern have opted to base a horror-comedy around the tropical rocker, with the opening text describing Murdaritaville as “a weird love letter” to Buffett and his music.
The story opens in 1993, as a couple drive from a Buffett concert when they pick up another fellow fan. It’s probably not a good thing but any ridiculously titled film will not only get my attention but also get me watching the film. It’s why I end up watching all the Sharknado films or 3-Headed Shark Attack or Big Ass Spider and any other similarly-titled film. Luckily, I do usually enjoy these films, so it’s not a bad thing but there are plenty of very very poor movies in there too. So it was always going to be 50/50 with Sewer Gators.
It was almost immediately clear with Sewer Gators that this wasn’t only a low budget affair but very much an amateur production. It looks like that. There’s no hiding it with expensive cameras or anything like that. But,...
