Troubled Hollywood conglomerate Paramount Global is scaling back its wide-ranging partnership with Korean entertainment leader Cj Enm, Variety has learned.
The deal was initially struck in December 2021 (when Paramount Global was called ViacomCBS) and was described at the time as “a global content deal encompassing coproductions for original TV shows and films as well as content licensing and distribution across the companies’ streaming services.”
The Paramount+ streaming service, currently housed within the Cj Enm-controlled Tving streaming platform, is to become unavailable from June 19, Tving has informed subscribers. Paramount+ began operating on Tving, as a free-of-charge addition for existing subscribers, in June 2022.
“Tving and Paramount+ have decided not to renew their partnership,” a Paramount Global spokesperson confirmed to Variety.
“In line with our respective business strategies, we have decided together to end the ‘Paramount+ Branded Pavilion’ service on June 18th. Going forward, Tving will strive to secure various businesses to increase user satisfaction,...

It’s official: Paramount+ is finally available to consumers in Japan. As first tipped by the company in September, the streaming service launched in Japan Wednesday as a no-additional-cost addition to the on-demand services of local operators J:com and Wowow. J:com is one of Japan’s top cable television operators and broadband internet providers, while Wowow is the longstanding leading premium pay channel in the market.
The Japan launch completes Paramount+’s entry into all of the world’s top ten international subscription video growth markets. The partnership marks the second launch for Paramount+ in East Asia, following a similar arrangement set up last year in South Korea with TVing, the streaming service controlled by Korean entertainment giant Cj Enm. Parmount+ also launched in Australia via a partnership in August 2021. In Europe, the service is available through partnerships with Sky in Italy, the U.K., and Germany, and with Canal+ in France.

Paramount+’s plan for growth in Asia-Pacific is taking shape.
Replicating the global Formula 1 promotional deal the streamer struck with Formula 1 will be a key tentpole of the strategy in the region, according to Executive VP and International General Manager Marco Nobili.
He appeared via video link on stage at the Asia TV Forum & Market today to discuss how premium tier offerings and unusual pacts such as the Formula 1 agreement would drive business locally.
Following its launch in Korea and Japan earlier in recent months, Paramount+ is competing with local players and international rivals such as Prime Video and Netflix in Apac. Nobili said striking non-traditional deals would increase its market penetration.
“We are bringing entertainment to people that want to be entertained,” he said, referring to the Formula 1 partnership, which has seen Paramount+ shows such as Special Ops: Lioness advertized during races around the world. “People are already...

With new seasons of all CBS scripted series delayed by the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the network has relied on shows from within Paramount Global and beyond for fresh scripted fare to put on the fall schedule. That will now include an extension of CBS’ biggest drama franchise of the past decade, NCIS, with episodes that will make their U.S. debut on the broadcast network just three days after their worldwide premiere in Australia.

CBS just smiled and gave us a Vegemite sandwich. “NCIS: Sydney,” previously announced as a Paramount+ Australia original and the first international edition of CBS’ “NCIS” procedural franchise, is making it to the U.S. shores as well. There are likely more content cuts ahead for Paramount+ in the United States. Paramount Global began removing shows from the platform in the last week of June, but the total volume of removals still lags behind other legacy media companies like Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery, who kept their content cuts coming for weeks.
Paramount may have more titles to remove from Paramount+ domestically, but internationally the picture is far rosier. According to an exclusive Variety report, the company’s announcement in 2022 that it would launch 150 original shows and movies created outside the U.S. is paying off handsomely.

Last June, Paramount Global pulled out all the stops at London’s spacey Outernet venue for its streaming launch in the U.K. The studio flew in 21 stars including Michelle Pfeiffer and Sylvester Stallone to pitch their Paramount+ originals to a wide-eyed audience. No expense, it seemed, was spared for the service’s splashy kick-off.
One year later, as Paramount Global sheds assets Stateside and offloads original programs in a bid to save money, that investment in international seems to be paying off. The company’s most robust signs of growth appear to be from its international streaming division, which has penetrated more than 45 markets to date, spanning Western Europe, Australia, South America and Canada. Currently, 85 local originals have been earmarked for the platform — and those commissions aren’t going anywhere, according to top brass.

Streaming services Paramount+ and Tving have greenlighted two new jointly-developed Korean TV series. They are the product of an ongoing relationship between parent companies Paramount Global and Korea’s Cj Enm.
They are action thriller “A Bloody Lucky Day” and period drama “Queen Woo.”
Korean TV content has been a growth vector for international and regional streaming platforms in Asia. Competition for new originals is fierce and expensive, but Korean drama and increasingly, unscripted shows, continues to attract critical and commercial kudos.
Paramount+ said that new Korean drama series “Yonder” has been the most-watched international show in the U.S. in its first week of availability (since Aprile 11). Its upcoming Korean series “Bargain” earned the best screenplay award at Canneseries on Wednesday and will upload in summer this year.

Paramount+ signed a promotional partnership for Formula 1’s 2023-24 season, making the streamer an official partner of Formula 1.
The full-season partnership comes on the heels of a short-term deal between Paramount+ and Formula 1 in 2022, which saw the streamer gain exposure at key Formula 1 races including Silverstone in the U.K. and Monza in Italy.
Under the sponsorship pact, Paramount+’s original series, movies and characters will take “center stage” inside Formula 1 Fan Zone areas “with the biggest stars coming together on and off the grid,” the companies said. Additionally, the partnership includes Paramount+ branding on track and physical trackside signage, digital sponsorships and promotional opportunities, which started in Melbourne, and will be followed by activity in Miami, Montréal, Austria, Silverstone, Monza, Suzuka, Austin, Mexico City, São Paulo and Las Vegas.
The deal does not encompass media rights for Formula 1, which is a subsidiary of John Malone’s Liberty Media.

Lille, France — Paramount+ will be bowing “Drag Race Italia” Season 3 on the streaming service in Italy, followed by the U.S. and Latin America later this year.
The Italian Season 3 follows on the recent announcement of three new “Drag Race” editions in Brazil, Germany and Mexico and a “Global Drag Race All Stars,” which will air on Paramount+ in their respective territories this year, Paramount+ announced Wednesday.
“As we expand Paramount+’s global footprint, it was important to recapture ‘Drag Race’ in key international markets and also build an interconnected competition series with a new ‘Global Drag Race All Stars’ – it’s like a global Super Bowl for Drag,” said Chris McCarthy, president-ceo, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios & Paramount Media Networks.

Paramount+ is well ahead of its target to greenlight 150 non-u.S. originals by 2025 but international boss Marco Nobili wishes the streamer could have rolled out quicker.
Addressing Series Mania this afternoon, Nobili said “if I could have accelerated our rollout then I would have” when questioned on how he would have done things differently over the past two years.
“But you have to balance these things out,” he countered. “Sometimes staggering a launch proves to be the right recipe. If you show audiences the window you can get straight out the gate but could compromise on show quality.”
Nobili added: “We could maybe have done an even faster rollout but looking back it was a challenge and we are proud of how it has worked out.”
Paramount+ is now live in dozens of territories around the world and is well ahead of its target to greenlight 150 originals by 2025, Nobili revealed.

Paramount Global launched its streaming service Paramount+ in German-speaking Europe on Thursday, completing a major rollout across western Europe that, following last week’s Paramount+ bow in France, means the studio-backed streamer is now available in 45 markets worldwide.
Paramount is a relative late comer to the global streaming game, and its aggressive international push — next year Paramount+ plans launches across Asia, Africa and the Middle East — stands in contrast to the more cautious, cost-focused approach of established SVOD giants like Netflix and Disney+, which have tempered their ambitions amid fears of a global recession.
