Sean Baker’s “Tangerine” may have failed to garner any Oscar nominations, but it is about to get something even better: A permanent spot in the new Academy Museum. The Academy has officially acquired one of the iPhones Baker and cinematographer Radium Cheung used to film the groundbreaking 2015 indie hit. The film was shot with three iPhone 5s smartphones.
Although “Tangerine” was not the first feature made entirely using an iPhone camera, it was inarguably the most successful and high profile release of its kind. The movie made a big splash at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival before landing two Gotham Award wins and an Indie Spirit Award for supporting actress Mya Taylor.

Sean Baker says he is “saddened” over the sexual harassment allegations made against June Pictures co-founder Andrew Duncan. Duncan and his company helped produce Baker’s acclaimed “The Florida Project,” which is currently a big contender in this year’s awards season.
Numerous employees at June Pictures say they were harassed by Duncan over the last year. One even alleges Duncan had an employee hire sex workers. The allegations also say that Duncan’s partner at June Pictures, Alex Saks, was aware of the accusations and Duncan’s behavior for over a year and never addressed the issue in an effective way. Duncan has denied the allegations, blaming them on his “rivals.”

Earlier this year, the upstart June Pictures impressed by taking three films to Sundance and Cannes. One of those, The Florida Project, has since become an awards contender. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter before Sundance, June co-founder Andrew Duncan said one key to the company’s early success was its focus: “We keep outside noise on a minimum,” he said.
But the outside noise cannot be contained. Sources claim that Duncan, who has provided millions in financial backing for June, sexually harassed several people associated with the company and has also instructed a June employee to pay prostitutes. Duncan denies...

Just a few short hours ago, the precursor season kicked off this morning for 2017 with the nominations for the 27th annual Ifp Gotham Independent Film Awards. Yes, we’ve reached that point in the year. Precursors will begin trickling in, starting to establish early frontrunners. Leading off is the Ifp Gotham Independent Film Awards, which will give us an idea of which indies are contenders, as opposed to just pretenders. Gotham is beginning a run that will ultimately end up at the Academy Awards in March. As you’ll see below, Get Out led the field with four nominations, followed by Call Me By Your Name, Columbus, The Florida Project, and Lady Bird with three apiece. He’s been appearing in stage and film productions for two-thirds of his life, making his Broadway debut at 10, but at 32, actor Paul Dano (he of “I’ve abandoned my child!” fame) is taking on one of the biggest challenges of his career. He’s adapting and directing an independent drama called Wildlife, based on the 1990 novel by Mississippi-born novelist Richard Ford. The somber-sounding film, produced for rookie outfit June Pictures, marks Dano’s inaugural directing and screenwriting efforts.
Variety reports that the film is already assembling an impressive cast, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan set to star. Gyllenhaal and Dano are also serving as producers for the still unscheduled film, along with Andrew Duncan, Alex Saks, Riva Marker, Oren Moverman, and Ann Ruark. No other cast members have been confirmed as of this writing, and it is unclear whether Dano himself will be appearing in ...
