It’s easy as a reviewer to just pick up and review books you know you will like. I’m as guilty as anyone. If I see a certain character guest starring, or a certain creator involved, I will probably pick up that book and possibly review it. Nothing wrong with that of course. Comics are there to be enjoyed, and everyone picks their own poison. Sometimes, though, to keep things fresh it’s worth just checking out a random book. If you enjoy it, great, you’ve expanded your reading pull list. You don’t enjoy, no harm no foul. You’ll have a deeper appreciation for the books you do like. I literally chose this book, Avengers #41, to review at random. Of late, the books I would willingly read every month from Marvel are a small,...

ITV Americas has found its new scripted leader. Endemol vet Philippe Maigret has been appointed president of scripted programming at the TV giant's U.S. arm. The news comes just two weeks after ITV Studios America president Orly Adelson exited just 18 months into the job -- and some eight months after her boss, ITV Studios Us Group CEO Paul Buccieri left for a key role at A+E. Maigret stepped down at rival Endemol earlier this year, after a four-year tenure in which he oversaw the creation of its drama production studio, which produced such shows as Low Winter Sun, Red Widow and Kingdom. His appointment at ITV comes as the company has been making an

Universal Pictures has been working on a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" for many years with George Clooney and Naomi Watts attached to star. The project kept falling apart, because the studio felt that it couldn't get the script right. Now comes word that Dutch director Diederik van Rooijen, who's best known for his Dutch TV series "Penoza" that has been remade for Us audiences as "Red Widow," was hired to helm the remake. The original 1963 film, starring Tippi Hedren, featured hordes of sinister birds. The movie spawned a horror sub-genre called "nature on the attack."...

Have you heard the name Diederik Van Rooijenc If so you're probably Dutch and have a familiarity with a television series titled "Penoza", which has now been remade as ABC's "Red Widow", or the thriller Taped. Otherwise, he's a complete unknown and he just might be making his Hollywood feature debut with a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds for Universal and producer Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes. The project has been discussed for as long as I can remember with Naomi Watts tipped to take over Tippi Hedren's role from the '63 original, which saw a horde of birds attacking San Francisco inhabitants. Jonathan Herman wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay with word this film will likely nod more toward Daphne du Maurier's short story than did Hitchcock's. I'm not certain, but I believe this may be the first time a director has actually been...

Red Widow alum Clifton Collins Jr is returning to ABC with a co-starring role alongside Ryan Phillippe, Juliette Lewis and KaDee Strickland in the network’s drama pilot Secrets & Lies, which has a series penalty. It centers on Ben (Phillippe), a family man who becomes the prime suspect in the murder of a young boy when he finds the body. Clifton, repped by Industry Entertainment, Resolution and attorney David Krintzman, will play Ben’s childhood friend and tenant in Ben’s pool house who is unwaveringly supportive of Ben. He most recently was seen in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim and next appears in Transcendence alongside Johnny Depp. Private Practice alum Tim Daly will co-star opposite Tea Leoni in CBS’ drama pilot Madam Secretary. ABC hasn't had ratings success on Sundays at 10pm in awhile. Pan Am, 666 Park Avenue, Gcb, and Red Widow were all cancelled. Will Betrayal be a different story and end up renewed for a second season? Time will tell.
On Betrayal, the extra-marital affair of two professionals gets even more complicated when their families end up on the opposite sides of a murder trial. The cast includes Stuart Townsend, Hannah Ware, Henry Thomas, Chris Johnson, Wendy Moniz, Braeden Lemasters, Elizabeth McLaughlin, and James Cromwell.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- usually the next day, around 11:30am Est/8:30am Pst. Refresh to see the latest.

Seven proved an unlucky number for new ABC lottery drama Lucky 7, which was adjusted down to a 0.7 adults 18-49 rating in Live+Same Day from a 0.8 in the fast nationals. That was down 46% from the series’ underwhelming premiere last week. It is also the lowest rating ever for a drama original on the Big 4 broadcast networks outside of Friday and Saturday. NBC’s Jekyll & Hyde medical drama Do No Harm logged the same 0.7 18-49 rating in its second outing last season and was pulled from the schedule shortly thereafter. Another NBC drama, Smash, posted a 0.7 and a week later was banished to Saturdays. The other hourlong series to record a 0.7 18-49 rating was ABC’s midseason drama Red Widow, which hit the low mark 10 days before it was cancelled by the network. Even low-trafficked Friday night doesn’t seem to tolerate dramas that fall under 0.7 in 18-49, with Fox’s...

The only thing everyone's talking about this morning is last night's "Breaking Bad" finale, and it's easy to see why.
Ratings for the finale have just come in with the extended 75-minute episode averaging 10.3 million viewers during its original 9pm broadcast. It also scored 6.7 million viewers in the key adults 18-49 demographic, making it the night's strongest performer.
That's a record for the series, and beaten only by "The Walking Dead" as AMC's most-watched original broadcast to date. It's also significantly up on the 6.6 million viewers who tuned in to see the penultimate episode live.
Showtime also had a good night last night with the third season premiere of "Homeland" scoring 1.9 million viewers (up 9% on the S2 premiere). New series "Masters Of Sex" also debuted to 1 million viewers, the same number "Homeland" itself debuted to three years ago.

Last night was chock-full of premieres on the broadcast networks, HBO and Showtime, and yet it was a finale that stole the spotlight — the closing episode of Breaking Bad. No numbers for the AMC drama yet but it is certain to set one more and final series high. As for the broadcast networks, they kicked off Sunday night of the 2013-14 season on a low note. Related: Walter White’s Odyssey Completed In ‘Breaking Bad’ Finale The ratings for CBS are scrambled because of a 15-minute football overrun in several East Coast markets including New York, but the network’s series are looking at double-digit year-to-year drops and new premiere lows for The Amazing Race, The Good Wife and The Mentalist for a second consecutive year. ABC and Fox too logged double-digit declines across the board with premiere lows for Once Upon A Time, Revenge, The Simpsons and American Dad.

Us network ABC chief Paul Lee is keen to kick off talks with UK talent and producers to commission more international coproductions.
Lee, president of ABC Entertainment Group, told Screen’s sister publication Broadcast that he wants to build on the success of series such as Canadian cop drama Rookie Blue by tapping into international storytelling techniques.
The call comes ahead of this week’s Rts Cambridge Convention, where the British, former BBC executive will deliver a keynote speech about Us network TV, the global dynamics of content creation and the way in which technology is changing story-telling.
“We look at HBO, which has traditionally done lots of coproductions with the BBC and we would welcome of that,” he said.
“I don’t think in terms of shore lines we are looking to cross borders - but certainly in terms of talent, producers, finances and on screen and off screen talent we are.”

In the mid-to-late seasons of 24, the writers encountered a conundrum: with all the crazy things they'd put Jack Bauer through in the course of the various season-long "worst days of his life", it became harder and harder to increase the scale or intensity of the horrific moments to make them still shock the audiences. At which point, the already "anyone could die at anytime" nature of the show took a turn for the absurd that occasionally succeeded in shocking (like the fifth season's opening), but most of the time just became a caricature of what a taut suspense series should be. ABC's Red Widow apparently opted to skip the five seasons of build-up to that point and established that in place of good writing, it would just try to be unpredictable for the sake of attracting eyeballs. More often than not, it doesn't work, and about halfway through the first...
