Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

Late Tuesday night, Louisiana’s Mike Johnson became the fourth Republican representative nominated for House Speaker since Republicans ousted Kevin McCarthy from the position earlier this month. The decision to nominate Johnson, a key architect of congressional efforts to challenge the 2020 election results, drew glowing praise from former President Donald Trump.
“Congratulations to Congressional Republicans! Yesterday was a big and very important day,” Trump wrote on Truth Social early Wednesday morning. “It gave us a quick and easy way forward with 5 candidates who are beyond reproach, and represent the absolute...

PBS has found a new moderator for its weekly political program Washington Week.
Weta, the PBS station that produces the show, says that Jeffrey Goldberg will join the program as its new moderator. Goldberg succeeds Yamiche Alcindor, who stepped aside from the long-running public affairs show earlier this year.
Goldberg has been the editor in chief of The Atlantic since 2016, and the PBS News program will be rebranded as Washington Week with The Atlantic when he officially starts on Aug. 11. Weta says that The Atlantic will join it and NewsHour Productions as an “editorial partner” on the program.
Goldberg will be the 10th moderator in Washington Week’s 56-year history. Past moderators have included Alcindor, Robert Costa, and the late Gwen Ifill. The program, which debuts new episodes on Friday evenings, has long carved out a unique niche among public affairs shows, with most others airing on Sunday mornings.

“Washington Week,” one of the nation’s most durable weekly news panel programs, is getting a new moderator, and, at the same time, a little financial aid.
Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor in chief of “The Atlantic,” a media outlet devoted to analysis and long-form journalism, will become the PBS program’s new on-air leader, while “The Atlantic” will join the public broadcaster as a producer of the program. Goldberg’s tenure is slate to kick off August 11.
The show has been without a permanent moderator since Yamiche Alcindor exited the role in February of this year. Over the years, journalists including Gwen Ifill, Robert Costa, Ken Bode and Robert MacNeill have led the program.
“With this partnership, ‘Washington Week’ will remain the premier destination for viewers in search of astute analysis of the most important political and policy issues facing our nation. We are especially pleased to welcome Jeffery Goldberg as moderator,...

Cecilia Vega, who has been with ABC News for more than a decade, will jump to a new correspondent role on CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” leaving behind an influential role covering the White House for the Disney-backed news operation.
Her move marks a rare effort to expand the hub of on-air personnel devoted to “60 Minutes.” In the recent past, executive producer Bill Owens has worked to augment his staff, elevating correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Jon Wertheim to full-time status and trying to develop a team devoted to a separate streaming effort tied to the show, an initiative that was ultimately scrapped. Pluto, the ad-supported streaming site operated by parent company Paramount Global, does feature a channel that features curated and archival material from the long-running program.
In an interview, Owens said he has been impressed by Vega’s range of reportorial experience as well as her time spent in print journalism.

Vega, who has been ABC News’ chief White House correspondent, will begin reporting for 60 Minutes in the spring and will be based in Washington. She’ll be the newsmagazine’s only correspondent based in the nation’s capital.
Vega said in a statement, “This is a dream come true. I am beyond honored to join the ranks of this legendary show and to work alongside the best reporters in journalism.”
Bill Owens, executive producer of 60 Minutes, said that Vega was a “sensational storyteller. I have admired her work for a long, long time and couldn’t be more excited to welcome her to 60 Minutes. Her new colleagues couldn’t agree more.”

After a brief hiatus, Natalie Morales is back on the news beat.
In one of her first efforts for CBS News, Morales was called upon to explore a decades-old murder in Colorado for “48 Hours.” “It was more like a baptism by ice,” confesses Judy Tygard, the executive producer of the long-running program. “We had Natalie traipsing through the forest and the snow and out on these bitter, cold, deserted passes in Colorado, and we gave her a very simple task: Master a 40 year old case in a few weeks.”
On Saturday, Morales will tell viewers about an investigation into the 1982 murders of two young women, Annette Schnee, 21 and Bobbie Jo Oberholtzer, 29, near the resort ski town of Breckenridge, Colorado. The case had gone cold until investigators – some of whom have been trying to solve it for years – were able to get a DNA match from evidence via a public genealogy database.

The White House was said to be “giddy and gleeful” in the wake of Election Night’s surprisingly strong showing by Democrats. But the administration has nothing on the mood of Bill Maher, as exhibited on Friday’s Real Time.
A week after a downbeat Maher was ready to throw shovels of dirt on America while anticipating its demise at Republican hands, the comedian returned in a jubliant mood. “I haven’t had a text from Joe Biden in three days,” he said in his warmup. “I feel like he’s ghosted me.”
Maher seemed amazed at the turn in fortunes, noting that Pennsylvania may have been the biggest surprise. That’s the state where the polished Dr. Mehmet Oz “lost to a guy who dresses like the airline lost his luggage.”
Noting that ex-President Donald Trump is suffering a backlash, with many now touting the 2024 prospects of Florida Gov.

Update: Discovery+ released a trailer for the documentary Unprecedented, featuring footage of Donald Trump and his family, as its filmmaker Alex Holder is set to speak to the January 6th Committee on Thursday.
“My father, he is very honest, and he is who he is,” Ivanka Trump says in the video.
Trump says, “I think I treat people well unless they don’t treat me well, in which case, you go to war.” Then the trailer cuts to footage of the attack on the U.S. Capitol.

We learned last month that the Jan. 6 committee found gaps in the White House call logs on the day of the Capitol riot, as well as that those gaps include times the committee knows former President Trump was on the phone. We learned on Tuesday that those “gaps” were more like one huge gap that spans … just about the entire day.
The Washington Post and CBS News have reported that the logs turned over to the committee show a gap in Trump’s phone logs that spans seven hours and thirty-seven minutes,...

The Paramount Global news unit is teaming with The Weather Channel to bring more reporting on weather and climate to CBS News programs including “CBS Mornings” and “The CBS Evening News,” as well as the division’s streaming efforts. Some of the most popular Weather Channel personalities — including Stephanie Abrams, Jim Cantore and Mike Bettes — are likely to turn up on CBS News programs in reports that originate from Weather Channel’s Atlanta headquarters. CBS viewers will also get to see augmented-reality technology that helps depict what a specific community might look like while in the midst of a tornado, snow or rain. The country is in crisis, and Real Time host Bill Maher is predicting that things could descend into even more chaos by 2024, when a potential election coup could generate violence in the streets and a total Constitutional crisis.
Maher outlined the steps he saw leading up to that awful moment in his “New Rules” closing monologue. At the end, he made his point: “I hope I scared the shit out of you.”
But it’s a long way to that moment, and the HBO show started with an examination of why things are devolving into a potential crisis, to the point where talk of civil war and politicians being chased into bathrooms are part of the regular news cycle.

In the week before the publication of Bob Woodward and Robert Costa’s Peril, many of its juiciest revelations already had made headlines.
Sans any kind of spoiler alert, there were the calls that General Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, gave to assure his Chinese counter part despite an erratic President Donald Trump. There also was former Vice President Dan Quayle counseling Vice President Mike Pence that no, he didn’t have the power to reject electors during the Jan. 6 vote count, despite Trump’s relentless pressure to do more.
But despite the pre-publication buzz surrounding Peril, fairly typical for a Woodward bombshell, some of the minor items still are revelatory.
One that stands out, oddly enough, is Trump’s apparently realization that his tweets weren’t necessarily helping him.
The scene in the book, which came out Tuesday, is a post-inauguration meeting at Mar-a-Lago...

Bannon’s activity anticipating January 6th has been well-documented, but the extent to which he spoke with Trump ahead of the insurrection was not known until Peril, a new book from Robert Costa and Bob Woodward, was published on Tuesday. The Democratic National Convention has been free of the excitement of crowds and many of the spontaneous encounters of a traditional “Super Bowl of politics,” but it has had its historic moments.
Two of them happened Wednesday night not just with Kamala Harris accepting the vice presidential nomination but with former President Barack Obama delivering a speech heavy in blistering criticism about his successor. No less than the future of democracy is at stake, Obama said.
