Not many actors can claim a breakthrough performance as impressive as that of Isabelle Fuhrman. In 2009, she took the horror world by storm as Esther, a sweet little Russian girl with a big secret. Orphan was a surprise hit thanks in large part to Fuhrman’s shockingly nuanced performance as an escaped murderer posing as an innocent child.
Fuhrman transitioned this notoriety into a coveted role in the high-profile adaptation of The Hunger Games where she plays another psychotic killer named Clove. Though she’s worked steadily since then, many of Fuhrman’s projects have flown under the radar of mainstream audiences. This month’s release of Orphan: First Kill, William Brent Bell’s prequel to the original film, sees the actress cleverly reprise the role that made her famous. Once again, she shines as Lena/Esther in a fantastically fun film destined to become a camp classic.

Today Hollywood said goodbye to one of the most important entertainment executives of the 20th Century.

It seems that the climax of Masters Of Sex has come and gone, and we didn’t even realise it. Showtime has declined to issue a fifth season renewal for the drama, and it will therefore not return to screens – meaning that the season four finale that aired on November 10th will now stand as the series closer.
The show starred Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan as William Masters and Virginia Johnson, and was based on the biography of the same, by Thomas Maier. It chronicled the work, life and times of these two real life researchers into sex and sexuality, and was developed by Michelle Ashford. The final episode of season four saw William and Virginia marry each other, at last, and it seems that Showtime felt this was a good point to cut the drama loose.

Masters and Johnson are now Mr. and Mrs. Masters. So why does it feel like their relationship is about to get more confusing than ever.
On Masters of Sex Season 4 Episode 10, Bill and Virginia solidified their marriage at the courthouse, but the look on Bill's face as they faced the photographers spoke volumes.
Elsewhere in the episode, Libby made a bold step for her future, Art took a stand against Nancy, and Barton let Bill know exactly where he stands.
Without a renewal, the promise of a Season 5 is uncertain. With that being said, much of this season finale felt like a series finale.
After years of dancing around their feelings for one another, Bill and Virginia decided to get married. Unfortunately every step of the way felt like a bad omen for their marriage.
While mostly everyone congratulated them on their engagement, some let their own experiences get in the way.

After four seasons of a show, some lose their original luster. Masters of Sex is definitely one of those shows. The edgy, scandalous intimacy which Masters of Sex built their first season on has not been as strong in the last two seasons. For the most part though, the show has stayed true to its original premise. Based on the groundbreaking work in human sexuality by Dr. William Masters and his assistant turned partner Virginia Johnson, Masters of Sex has given viewers a glimpse into the first time topics on sexuality were ever discussed. Season 4 of Masters of Sex premieres on September 11 at 10pm Eastern on Showtime. I’ve been blogging this show for all of its run.
Masters of Sex is based on the true story of the breakthrough sex research of Doctor William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) (“Masters & Johnson”), while intermingling fact and fiction. Some characters are entirely fictional, parts of the chronology are tweaked, but major historical moments are generally respected.
Where we left off: Here’s the quick summation of the Season 3 finale—read below for a detailed series summary. Bill Masters, realizing his love for Virginia Johnson, confesses his affair to his wife, who already knew. Too late; he’s chased Virginia and her new fiancé to the airport, but they take off for Mexico and presumably elopement. Barton Scully is in love with a hot gay doctor. Helen and Betty are expecting thanks to Austin.

“This is the weirdest, most fascinating relationship.” That was Michelle Ashford’s immediate response to the biography of pioneering sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson, whose complex working and romantic partnership spanned 30 years.
With producing partner Sarah Timberman, Ashford brought the book to HBO and FX, but also to brand-new Showtime executive David Nevins, who immediately grasped the possibilities. Though Showtime’s “Masters of Sex” is based on the pioneering sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson, the showrunners said Tuesday they were under pressure to depart from history in depicting the couple’s family — specifically the addition of more children than the real-life couple actually had. “We were advised to add children to protect the people that are still alive,” executive producer Michelle Ashford told reporters during a panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “It was not a storytelling prerogative, it had to do with protecting living people.” “Masters of Sex” tells the story of Dr.

There are a few key elements of Showtime’s drama series Masters of Sex, about the famed human sexuality studies of Dr. William Masters and Virginia Johnson, that are in dire need of being worked out. And as the series enters its third season Sunday (10 p.m.), a time-jump to 1966 — the year their groundbreaking book Human Sexual Response was published — seemingly fixes one of the main problems. And that was the drag that season two had on the storytelling. The first (and so far best) season was a thrilling introduction to these two real-life characters and the exceptional

Dramas about real people are not documentaries, and can't be held to the same standards. The demands of one form are different than the other's. By necessity, events and people need to be compressed, or tweaked, if not wholly invented at times, to serve the storyteller's needs. Ideally, you get a story that captures the spirit of the real person, even if the details aren't quite right. But there's still a reason writers choose a real person as their subject rather than simply making up everything out of whole cloth. A fictionalized account has to deviate from the historical record to a degree, but there comes a time where there are so many changes as to make the whole thing seem pointless. Showtime's "Masters of Sex" has never presented itself as a wholly factual account of the lives and careers of pioneering sex researchers William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson...

In a strictly factual sense, it's also mostly made up.

Last year, the audience for Masters of Sex grew as the season progressed. Will the ratings continue to climb in season two or will the fall? Will the show be renewed for a third season or, will it be cancelled instead?
Masters of Sex follows the unusual lives of William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan), researchers whose work touched off the sexual revolution. Others in the cast include Caitlin FitzGerald, Teddy Sears, Annaleigh Ashford, Beau Bridges, Allison Janney, and Julianne Nicholson.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available. Because the Showtime audience is sometimes very small, the numbers can be difficult to find.

In utterly unsurprising news, Showtime has opted to pick up its successful dramas Masters of Sex and Ray Donovan for 12-episode third seasons, to premiere in 2015.
David Nevins, Showtime prexy, said in an official statement:
“Both Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex are quintessentially Showtime: bold, provocative, premium television with production values at the top of the food chain. These acclaimed shows are filled with complex and interesting characters and settings that will no doubt give audiences compelling television to invest in for seasons to come.”
Masters of Sex, about human sex pioneers William Masters (Martin Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan), has been roundly acclaimed since its premiere, and this year it received five Emmy nominations, including one for Caplan’s performance. Already, it won Guest Actress in a Drama for Allison Janney’s heartbreaking turn at Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmys.
Ray Donovan, whose titular character (Liev Schreiber) is a fixer for L.

The 'crossover episode' is surprisingly rare in television and only happens thanks to a particular set of circumstances; usually involving shared writers-producers, and both shows airing on the same network.
Do you remember when Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel's narratives would often criss-cross? We can look forward to more of the same when The CW's Arrow is joined by The Flash - and there's also a crossover special due for Fox's Family Guy and The Simpsons.
However, the vast majority of TV shows will never have crossover episodes because the circumstances aren't right, or because it's frankly a terrible idea.
But that doesn't stop people's imaginations running riot! Below are 12 very unlikely, or outright impossible, examples of past and present TV shows that could, or should, have combined forces... maybe.

Spoilers up to the fifth episode of the second season. If Mad Men convinced us all that the sixties were the heyday of cultural Neanderthals, its most obvious successor, Masters of Sex, is determined to prove that, like a pair of bountiful breasts in a too-tight corset, social progress will inevitably spill forward. Set in the Eisenhower era, Showtime's best series ever has always leaned toward a more progressive picture of the past. Evolution had to come from somewhere, after all, and in this case it's sexologists Dr. William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) shining a light toward the future by inserting illuminated glass dildos into their female subjects. As the second season unfurls, though, it's becoming clearer that s...

The first season of Showtime's "Masters of Sex" received five Emmy nominations last month, including Lead Actress (Lizzy Caplan) and Guest Actress (Allison Janney). Can the series' excellent sophomore run, currently airing Sunday nights at 10, boost its chances of winning? Developed by Michelle Ashford from Thomas Maier's eponymous dual biography, "Masters of Sex" follows respected ob-gyn Dr. William Masters (Michael Sheen) and secretary-turned-collaborator Virginia Johnson (Caplan, at once winsome and ferocious) as they embark on a controversial study of sexuality in late-1950s St. Louis. As the pair collects physiological data from human subjects in flagrante and defends against attacks by a conservative, male-dominated medical community, "Masters of Sex" also emerges as tale of kindred spirits. Bill and Virginia are both, in their own way, sexual revolutionaries, and watching them navigate each other, as well as their society's hidebound mores, is an...

If you're feeling glum about the state of the world today, just watch basic cable. There, you'll stumble across a number of current shows set in past decades -- or reruns from a few decades ago -- and you'll be reminded that things weren't any better back then.
This past week saw the Season 1 finale (and perhaps the series finale) of "Halt and Catch Fire," the AMC drama about '80s techies trying to build a then-revolutionary new portable computer. Unlike many of the other period shows built on the "Mad Men" model, this one doesn't make the past look sexy; the clothes and décor are as tacky as they should for a series set in 1983, and the cutting-edge gadgetry all looks clunky and slow to today's eyes. (The computer the characters are trying to build is considered lightweight at 15 pounds.) The season built toward the unveiling in the penultimate episode of the machine,...

Sunday night’s episode of Masters of Sex, titled “Fight,” was one of the series’ best. It stuck the show’s two main characters, Dr. William Masters (Michael Sheen) and his assistant/lover Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan), in a single hotel room and then let them batter out their anxieties and anger through flirtation, role play, and sex, all while an actual boxing match rages on TV.
In TV parlance, episodes like “Fight,” where characters are restricted to a few sets, are often called “bottle episodes”—they’re cheaper to make (you don’t have to build new sets or...

When Masters of Sex kicked off its run last September, it started out as a terrific yet tantalizing mix of period drama and tart sex comedy, like a television version of Bill Condon’s excellent biopic Kinsey. The series used a real-to-life sex study from two doctors – Dr. William Masters and Virginia Johnson – to explore the social mores of a bygone era and the sexual curiosities and desires of its central characters. Now, the show, a worthy recipient of several Emmy nominations for acting, is slowly moving from looking at sex in the way of nervous, giddy comedy to the consequences of our actions when our drive for that desire moves out of control.

The summer’s starting to heat up, which means its time to retreat inside to air conditioning and some good TV. Luckily, there’s a lot to consume, with Jack Bauer facing a finale on 24, a new season of Real Housewives, and the arrival of a parody version, The Hotwives of Orlando.
