The Academy’s 90th Sci-Tech Awards Saturday at the Beverly Wilshire (hosted by Sir Patrick Stewart) was dominated by the integral animation and visual effects software that powers the industry’s CG characters, simulations, and compositing. Digital Domain, DreamWorks, Industrial Light & Magic, Pixar, and Rhythm & Hues were among the 10 standout honorees.
In addition, visual effects technologist Jonathan Erland received the Gordon E. Sawyer Award (an Oscar statuette) for his technological contributions. Erland worked at Ilm as a model builder for “Star Wars” in 1977 and later moved over to Apogee to work on “Star Trek: The Motion Picture.” He eventually became director of R&D for Apogee, where he received patents for a reverse blue-screen traveling matte process, the Blue-Max flux projector, and a method for making front projection screens.
Erland also played a key role in establishing a separate visual effects Academy branch in 1995. He received the Academy’s John A.

And then there were three.
After a summer of heartbreak, death, and betrayal, Camp Stillwater's desperate, dark, demonized version of The Hunger Games left three counselors standing.
Yet seemingly the two out of three were just filler characters for the summer.
Drew and Blair, after returning the children to safety, went back to Camp Stillwater after yielding a warning from Anton that their friends needed help.

Perhaps the new preview video and photos for tonight’s season finale of Freeform’s Dead of Summer, titled “She Talks to Angels,” will provide some clues as to who will be left standing at the end of the summer at Camp Stillwater.
Press Release: The summer of 1989 at Camp Stillwater comes to a terrifying end in “She Talks to Angels,” the season finale of “Dead of Summer,” airing Tuesday, August 30 (9:00 – 10:00 p.m. Edt), on Freeform, the new name for ABC Family.
What was supposed to be a fun summer that the Camp Stillwater counselors would never forget quickly turned into a horrible experience they will be lucky to survive. As summer comes to a close, the centuries-old battle between good and evil at Lake Stillwater will be settled once and for all.

The ninth episode of Freeform’s Dead of Summer is titled “Home Sweet Home,” but if the photos and clips are an indicator of what’s in store for Camp Stillwater’s counselors tonight, the episode could also be titled, “The Exorcism of Amy Hughes,” or “There Will Be Blood… Lots of Blood.”
Press Release: The counselors confront the evil that lurks in the lake of Camp Stillwater in “Home Sweet Home,” an all-new episode of “Dead of Summer,” airing Tuesday, August 23 (9:00 – 10:00 p.m. Edt), on Freeform, the new name for ABC Family.

Bravo, Zelda Williams. Bravo.
Dead of Summer Season 1 Episode 4 met Drew with painful memories of a time long forgotten, while he and Jessie started to butt heads, and Amy dealt with the aftermath of being struck by lightning.
Amy: What are these crazy people trying to do?
Garrett: Best that I can put together... They're trying to awaken some demon.
Permalink: Best that I can put together... They're trying to awaken some demon. Added: July 20, 2016
Amy is like a cat, isn't she? Nine lives. Struck by lightning and probably ingested enough lake water to drown, but she's back at Stillwater after a day. One day.
As if her life wasn't bad enough, she's now undergoing some sort of demon possession, and is potentially in danger of being the sacrifice for the lake demon whose creepy hand almost dragged her underwater.
Hey guys, I'm not going into that lake anymore. Look what I found!

We recently had the opportunity to speak with Ronen Rubinstein, who plays Alex Powell on Freeform's Dead of Summer, and he was very tight-lipped about what death will bring to Camp Stillwater over the summer.
While things are only just getting started for the teens at Camp Stillwater, the show has started off at a breakneck speed, and only in Dead of Summer Season 1 Episode 3, we were left wondering if two of the main characters could possibly be dead, already.
It was a pleasure chatting with him as we delved into the deeper plot details of what may happen to Alex, and the others, as the season progresses, and he decided what his dream role would be. (Hint! It involves the Red Hot Chili Peppers.)
Find out what the summer will bring to the campers, as well as some insight on Rubinstein and his plans for after Dead of Summer wraps!

Blotter is kicked out on Dead of Summer Season 1 Episode 2 after an acid trip inadvertently reveals the bones of the mysterious spirit that haunts Camp Stillwater.
This show proved itself to be better than I ever intended, though the Satanic path they're following in regards to the spirits is questionable.

I have a confession. Alex Powell is my favorite character, and even after his questionable actions, I still love him. I apologize.
Lacing Blotter's... baby bottle... with acid, and letting his friend take the fall for that annoying, little kid's repeated running off was not cool, but understandable.
His home life is still unknown, other than the fact that his father died a few years before, and he's blackmailing the dirtbag at the laundromat where his father used to work.
Who would've thought that Alex was from Russia?
His life has toughened him up.

A true American horror story.
For when you want that American Horror Story experience Irl:
A creepy clown carrying a bouquet of balloons has been spotted wandering the streets of Wasco, Cali. numerous times in the past week. Thankfully, he’s not quiet as terrifying as Freak Show’s Twisty, but we’d prefer not to run into Any clowns in the dead of the night, thank you very much.
“Come find me, I will give you a balloon,” the Wasco Clown wrote on Twitter. (Because of course he’s on social media. It’s 2014. He also has an Instagram account, and a Facebook page has been set up to track his sightings.)

The true identity of the Northampton Clown, a masked man who wears a clown costume and stalks the streets of the small U.K. town at night, "terrorizing" locals, has remained a mystery. Until now. And we could not be more disappointed. But more on that in a moment. The man behind the mask—and one of the best stunts in a while—is 22-year-old filmmaker and Northampton University student Alex Powell, with help from two pals, Elliot Simpson and Luke Ubanksi. Powell was outed as the clown by The Sunday People, when a photog caught Powell and his friends entering their apartment in regular clothing, then emerging "after the all clear was given by his friends" in full...
