Spoiler Alert: This recap contains details from tonight’s USA Network series finale of Mr. Robot.
If you thought the last season of USA Network’s Sam Esmail series Mr. Robot was becoming a little too straight forward and suspenseful sans its regular twist from the mind of Elliot Alderson, well then tonight’s two-hour series finale and last weekend’s penultimate episode “eXit” popped the show’s arm back in its noirish socket complete with many Elliot doppelgangers.
Esmail wasn’t available to the press to sort out tonight’s series finale, and likely for good reason: We’d keep bugging him about what Elliot’s (Rami Malek) entire wormhole meant at the end, and quite likely the creator wants us to figure that out for ourselves, just like David Chase wanted everyone to come away with their own personal take on why their TVs went black in The Sopranos...

Mr. Robot Season 4 Episode 9
After nearly a half dozen episodes of Mr. Robot Season 4 spinning in place, “Conflict” finally gives us the promised showdown between Elliot and Whiterose that we’ve all been waiting for.
The result? The best and most satisfying episode of the season to date.
For the past few weeks, Mr. Robot has done pretty much everything but tell the story the season premiere initially promised. We’ve had holiday-themed detours involving sparkling winter forests and drunk Santas, random dates, kidnappings, betrayals and an entire hour devoted to the revelation that Elliot’s multiple personality disorder is a product of sexual abuse at the hands of his father. All of these stories, taken individually, have been fairly fascinating and compelling,...

Mr. Robot Season 4 Episode 7
Halfway through Mr. Robot’s final season, it’s less clear than ever what sort of endgame we’re moving toward. “Proxy Authentication Required” is a riveting hour, to be sure, with great performances from all the actors involved. But it also forces us to ask – is season 4 more than a series of great individual pieces strung together from week to week? What is this season building toward?
That question – as has been the case for the past few episodes – will have to wait until next week. But at least the distraction in the meantime is pretty great.
Here, creator Sam Esmail puts together an installment structured as a play in five acts, which focuses exclusively on Vera’s...

Mr. Robot Season 4 Episode 5
Mr. Robot has always been the sort of series that likes to play with audience expectations in a variety of weird, occasionally frustrating and often wonderful ways. The titular Mr. Robot turned out to be someone who existed only in Elliot Alderson’s head at the end of the series’ first season. Half of its second was a misdirection, an imaginary reality that covered for the fact that Elliot had really been in prison all along. We’ve seen episodes cut together to mirror a single take of events unfolding in real time, and real-life news footage spliced in to the world of E-Corp.
“Method Not Allowed” is another of these strange gimmicky installments from the...

Mr. Robot season 4 has a lot of story to wrap up and characters to catch up with but Angela Moss got the shortest shrift.
The following contains spoilers for Mr. Robot season 4.
Angela Moss has always been one of Mr. Robot’s most fascinating characters. Granted, she doesn’t have multiple personalities, isn’t a world-class computer expert, and makes more than her fair share of mistakes. She’s perhaps the most normal person on the show and probably the one most viewers relate to the easiest, at least in its initial episodes.
As Elliot Alderson’s childhood best friend, Angela has been part of Mr. Robot from the very start, and knows him better than anyone who isn’t his sister, Darlene. Each had a parent die young, victims of a shady and mysterious project at the Washington Township nuclear power plant. Both have spent most...

Mr. Robot Season 4 Episode 3
With the clock ticking down on its final season, it might feel like a weird time to include a fifteen-minute cold open set in 1982 that serves as an origin story of sorts for the series’ designated Big Bad, but, hey – this is Mr. Robot. It’s never been about doing anything the traditional way.
However, it’s easy to wonder if this look back at Zhi Zhang before she became Whiterose might not have better fit into the narrative last season, which was admittedly much more focused on concepts like whether or not we can undo the mistakes we made in the past or learn how to live with them – and ourselves – if we can’t.

Mr. Robot Season 4 Episode 1
For a review of any show starting its final season, it's tempting to start with the big picture.
What does Mr. Robot meant to TV history? Where do we place it? How do we feel about it? In that respect, Mr. Robot has one of the more curious rap sheets in the recent TV timeline. In season 1 the show seemed like it was poised to become one of the biggest dramas on television. The USA Network support was there, the critical adoration was effusive, and the hype was damn sure palpable.
Then Mr. Robot kind of fell off. It's not necessarily the show's fault. It remained about just as good, if not better, than its early hours. Creator Sam Esmail...

Having already broken the mold on televised serial noir with Mr. Robot, creator Sam Esmail delves back into the genre with his Amazon Prime/Universal Cable series Homecoming, adapted from the podcast of the same name. The series streams November 2 but recently premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.
Esmail became addicted to the podcast by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, who are also co-creators on the series, and coincidentally Julia Roberts was a fan too with this story about a therapist (Roberts) in an experimental government facility who helps U.S. soldiers make the transition to civilian life. However, her boss (Bobby Cannavale) has ulterior motives in the soldiers’ deprogramming. Flash-forward to 2022 and we see the whole experiment has gone sideways for Robert’s Heidi Bergman: She’s working at a rundown seafood restaurant.
After a third re-bingeing of the podcast, Esmail realized there’s something visual in Homecoming.
