(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the “Empire” series finale.)
“Empire’s” reign at Fox came to an end Tuesday with an episode that was never intended to be the show’s series finale but was instead forced upon the show due to production shutdowns amid the coronavirus pandemic.
TheWrap spoke with showrunner Brett Mahoney ahead of the hour, titled “Home Is on the Way,” about how he managed to cobble together elements of the completed 18th episode of the sixth and final season and the halfway finished Episode 19 to make an end for “Empire,” when it was supposed to close on Episode 20. And though what you saw tonight was the “spirit” of a finale, there are still questions unanswered and moments Mahoney had to leave out because they weren’t filmed — and because he and creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong maintain that they want to shoot a proper...

At one point in the series finale of “Empire,” the Lyon family sits around a table and discuss canceling the premiere of the Lucious and Cookie biopic that they produced because of safety concerns after Lucious’ (Terrence Howard) nefarious dealings have someone gunning for him — literally. It’s a moment that is both quintessential “Empire,” as the media dynasty family discuss their strength to stand against enemies, but also unexpectedly timely, as the production of the Fox musical drama’s final few episodes were halted due to the coronavirus pandemic, making this 18th episode of the final season a forced series finale.
“We looked at the series premiere and said, ‘How can we end this in the most poetic way possible and honoring that really great series premiere?’ That was our inspiration for the true series finale, and we just had to let that go when I wasn’t able to shoot that,...

Empire is coming to an end sooner than originally planned.
That much we already knew.
What we didn't know was whether the show was going to have a satisfying ending in mind for the fans who have watched for six seasons.
Even the show's leading lady has no idea how the final episode will play out.
Taraji P. Henson joined NBC’s 3rd Hour of Today to talk about the series finale and how she’s giving back during the coronavirus pandemic.
“We actually had an ending for you guys but Covid shut us down, so I will be finding out what's happening at the same time you guys are…We were slated to do 20 episodes," she told Sheinelle Jones, adding:
"We got shut down in the middle of production on episode 19," she continued.
"So they had to go into the editing room to make movie magic to give you a finale,...

Empire's next episode was not supposed to be its last.
But thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Fox has decided to end the series two episodes early, meaning that it will likely serve as the series finale.
In separate statements, Empire creators/executive producers Lee Daniels and Danny Strong opened up about the show's earlier than planned conclusion.
They both hope to bring closure to the fans at some point in the future, but Fox has no plans to do so, meaning that Empire Season 6 Episode 18 is set to end with a lot of threads left dangling.
"I’m heartbroken we aren’t getting to shoot the finale we wanted — at least not yet,” Daniels said.
Added Strong, “We had an ending for the series planned that we all loved, and hopefully someday we’ll be able to film it and give the series its proper conclusion.”

“Empire” isn’t getting the grand send-off it was supposed to thanks to coronavirus, but co-creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong aren’t letting go of all hope yet.
In dual statements put out on Tuesday, both executive producers reflected on the show’s success across the past six seasons, adding that they hope to one day get a chance to film the proper series finale they had envisioned.
“The success of Empire and bringing the Lyon family to broadcast television will always be one of the proudest achievements of my career,” said Daniels. “This show is the definition of breaking barriers. Thank you to our incredible cast, especially Terrence and Taraji, along with our amazing writers and tireless crew, for all of their hard work and bringing this story to life. I think there’s more to do with these characters, and I’m heartbroken we aren’t getting...

It’s official: next week’s 18th episode of Empire’s sixth season, airing on April 21, will be the hip-hop family drama’s finale for the foreseeable feature, and quite possibly a series finale.
In separate statements, Empire creators/executive producers Lee Daniels and Danny Strong addressed the abrupt ending of their show due to the coronavirus pandemic while holding out home that they could film a proper finale one day. In light of the situation in the U.S., there are no current plans for that.
