“Oppenheimer” took home an impressive seven Academy Awards at Sunday’s Oscars, including the night’s top prize of Best Picture. The Universal movie also won Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy amongst a number of other awards. That is one below the total of eight wins we predicted for the film as “The Zone of Interest” beat the movie to win Best Sound. However, seven is still a huge tally and places “Oppenheimer” amongst the Best Picture winners to take home the highest amount of Oscars this century. Scroll down below for a complete list of every Best Picture winner this century ranked by total Oscar wins.

Netflix is doing pretty well when it comes to South Korean content, as it is dominating the market in the US. With massive hits like Squid Games, All of Us Are Dead, and Hellbound the streaming service has added another surefire hit to the list. Based on the Naver Webtoon titled SalinjaㅇNangam (A Killer Paradox) by Kkomabi, A Killer Paradox revolves around a submissive college student who accidentally kills a serial killer with a hammer. Soon, he learns that he has a superpower that senses evil in people and he starts getting rid of said people while being chased by a relentless detective.

Currently revelling in the success of recently-uploaded Don Lee-starring film “Badland Hunters” and already teasing the second season of “Squid Game,” Netflix has unveiled a major slate of Korean films and series for 2024.
In August last year, Netflix publicly committed to investing $2.5 billion on Korean content over the next four years. That reflected both Netflix’s position as the country’s leading streamer, with an estimated 6.5 million subscribers, and its adopted role as one of the biggest exporters of Korean film and TV content.
“We were able to make this [investment] decision because we have great confidence that the Korean creative industry will continue to tell great stories,” said the streamer’s co-chief Ted Sarandos at the time of the spending commitment.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” swept the 2023 Oscars by winning seven Academy Awards. In that seven were six above-the-line awards, which is an Oscars record. Seven Oscars is also the most amount any film has won in a single year since “Gravity” also won seven in 2014. When you've been deprived of something for an extended period of time, anything that comes close to the real McCoy starts to look a little better than it did before. That may well apply to The Policeman's Lineage, director Lee Kyu-maan's new thriller starring Cho Jin-woong (Believer) and Choi Woo-shik (Parasite), which delivers plenty of reliable thrills in a slick package, but eventually runs into trouble when its familiar elements begin to tangle themselves in a messy final reel. Given the overall paucity of new Korean releases we've had ever since the beginning of the pandemic (countless completed films are still waiting in the wings for local market conditions to improve), we've been treated to precious few Korean thrillers over the past few years. That...

Bong Joon-ho's Oscar-award-winning film "Parasite" made cinematic history in 2019. Not only was it the first South Korean film to win the prestigious Palme D'or and the Academy Award for Best Picture, but it was also the first non-English language film to win the latter award. All of its accolades are deserved! "Parasite" is one of the most riveting films to grace movie screens in a while. Bong makes a movie that feels equal parts heist and family drama, bringing twists that leave audiences speechless long after the credits role.
"Parasite" follows the Kim family, (barely) making a living by pooling their money and performing odd jobs. When their son, Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik), discovers an opportunity to teach English to a wealthy family's young daughter, the rest of the Kim family con their way into performing high-paying work for the Park family. Ki-jung (Park So-dam) poses as an art therapist for the Park's young son.

An odd mishmash of competing genres, Lee Kyu-man’s South Korean drama “The Policeman’s Lineage” is a somewhat intriguing but ultimately bland detective story. What begins as a murder mystery quickly gives way to an undercover corruption narrative, i.e. “Infernal Affairs,” before finally settling into a tedious actioner. While anchored by strong performances by Cho Jin-woong (“The Handmaiden”) and Choi Woo-sik (“Parasite”), as the possibly corrupt cop Park and the rookie Ia officer Choi sent to investigate him, the film oscillates so wildly between tones that it’s hard to get a grasp on if it’s meant to be a serious indictment of policing, a buddy-cop film, or a tongue-in-cheek shoot-em-up.
Beginning with a flashback to Choi’s father, a policeman who was ultimately killed in the line of duty, “The Policeman’s Lineage” quickly establishes Choi as both the moral center of the narrative and a...

Police departments, and particularly the narcotics department, have often made good fodder for the thriller genre. Director Lee Kyoo-man showed that he was more than adept in the thriller genre in his second feature, the based-on-a-true-story “Children…”. For his third production “The Policeman’s Lineage”, he looks at the police bureau and the narcotics department in a film that is based off Japanese novel “Keikan no Chi” by mystery fiction writer Joh Sasaki, already the subject of a Japanese tv adaptation.

In a world where the 3 Bs are edging towards massive mainstream success, and an age when all things “K” are synonymous with “crazy, sexy, cool”, another phenomenon has been going viral and global: the zombie movie “made in Korea”.
Filmmakers from the peninsula have injected new life in the undead genre, bringing both a bit of a Midas and Lazarus touch to a mythology that has been exploited almost to death. Original storylines spanning wildly diverse settings, from the Joseon era to our troubled times and even dark Mad Max-style dystopian futures, in-depth character development, and a clear-eyed look at today’s societal fears have raised the biters back from the realm of putrid pop fiction.

There is no struggle more classic than man versus beast. More specifically, there’s no story more timeless than the battles of heroes and monsters. Literature, legend, and, of course, cinema love a good creature feature. Monstrum is a return to form and hits all the notes of a great monster movie, with a sophisticated edge that keeps the entire film refreshing and exciting.
In the 16th century, a time of political unrest and fear, a plague is wiping out the villagers on Mount Inwangsan. Rumors begin to spread of a vicious monster that is responsible for bringing the plague and slaughtering entire villages. In response, the King calls his most trusted general and a band of heroes out of retirement to get to the bottom of things. They will discover that the real threat may not simply be the beast itself… but something much more sinister.

The cast of Parasite received a lot of love at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night.
When Kang-ho Song, So-dam Park, Woo-sik Choi, Jeong-eun Lee and Sun-kyun Lee took the stage to introduce their movie — which was nominated for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture — they were welcomed with a two-minute long standing ovation from their fellow actors in the audience.
Directed by Bong Joon Ho, the psychological thriller was already a blockbuster hit in South Korea before it became one of the most talked-about films of 2019 in the United States — former President Barack Obama...

From superheroes to real life heroes, to tales of Hollywood and voyages to the Moon, the year that was 2019 had much to offer to audiences flocking to theaters for a few hours of escapism from the world.
Filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, Sam Mendes, Celine Sciamma, Quentin Tarantino, Olivia Wilde, Taika Waititi and Bong Joon-Ho brought a wealth of stories to the silver screen.
We saw the culmination of the Marvel phase 3 story arc, the culmination of the Skywalker Saga and the still in progress, groundbreaking John Wick series, as well as a host of other interesting, quality movies unleashed into cinemas.
Wamg presents its list for the Top 10 films of 2019.
1. Martin Scorsese reminds us why he is still a master movie maker with The Irishman, a compelling foray into familiar territory, making use of new tech to complete the “mob trilogy’ he began nearly thirty years ago with Goodfellas.

During a year in which the world finds itself increasingly in the throes of totalitarianism and corruption, when institutions, traditions and good old common sense seems to be crumbling before our very eyes, when the world itself appears to be catching fire, a spirit of thanksgiving may be one that is hard to come by. But there are reasons to give thanks even in light of those realities, ones even directly to those realities, and I encourage you to seek out those reasons, be as grateful as is warranted, and find ways to express that gratitude. In other words, don’t let the bastards get you down.
In the world of the movies, there was the usual degree of lousy movies, some franchise-related, of course, but some that were pretty shitty of their own accord. And at the same time, there were lots of reasons to justify gratitude. Here are...

With no plan, nothing goes wrong.
Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite is an extravagant tale of swashbuckling swindling and paralyzing division. Precisely stirred and boiled, the spectacle and captivation behind its story is that we, as spectators, never get a whiff of what’s cooking in the other room. What starts off as biting satire – probing at class politics with the gleeful antics of a poor family leeching themselves onto the fruit of a rich one – furtively evolves into a blend of monstrosities and hellfire, until finally hurtling us into an ocean of organic bloodshed. The journey is so frantically pleasant that any attempt to synthesize it without getting into the nitty-gritty of its sharp twists and turns feels dishonorable. But believe me, this is one of the best movies of the year.
Kim Ki-woo (Train to Busan’s Woo-sik Choi) and his family are living on the edge of poverty in Seoul.

Similarly to ‘Burning’ last year’s So. Korean Academy Award submission, underneath the story, which is riveting by itself, is the burning discomfort and even rage of the poor who live on the underside of urban rich societies.Kang-ho Song, Hye-jin Jang, Woo-sik Choi, and So-dam Park
This 2 hour, 12 minute story carries through strongly all the way to the end with nine characters, all of whose stories and characters are intriguing and lead you to want more.
And is the Parasite the rich or is it the poor?
Vastly different from his two previous films, the futuristic train drama Snowpiercer, and the effects-heavy Netflix eco-oddity Okja …, Parasite is almost a family drama in the vein of Kore-eda’s Shoplifters portraying a loving family living in society’s underbelly, surviving in sociopathic circumstances.
With a subtext about class warfare, similarly to Burning, if there were any equivalent to such a unique...
