In the 11 years since it burst onto the scene, A24 has accomplished something virtually unheard of in the film industry: establishing itself as a distributor with a fanbase that rivals those of the biggest directors.
Through a carefully curated lineup of acquisitions and original projects (and some seriously impressive marketing strategy), the company has become synonymous with crowd-pleasing independent filmmaking executed at the highest possible level. And its effortlessly cool promotional campaigns and brand collaborations have turned its logo into the ultimate stamp of approval for any project seeking film geek street cred.
The brand is elastic enough to be applied to a wide variety of projects — this is the company that released both “Moonlight” and “Spring Breakers,” after all — but you can generally recognize an A24 movie when you see one. It’s always going to be an auteur-driven work that unapologetically swerves away from mainstream trends in favor...

Danny and Michael Philippou, the breakout directors of last year’s box office horror hit “Talk to Me,” are re-teaming with A24 on their next horror film, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire. And this time they’re being paired with a two-time Oscar nominee.
Sally Hawkins will star in “Bring Her Back” from the Philippous, who are writing and directing the original movie for A24. Danny and Michael Philippou are also re-teaming with the producers on “Talk to Me,” Causeway Films’ Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton (“The Babadook”).
Plot details are being kept under wraps for “Bring Her Back,” but the film will begin production later this summer.
This would not be the first time Hawkins has starred in a horror film. Way back in 2007 she appeared in “The Killing Gene” alongside Stellan Skarsgård, Tom Hardy, and Selma Blair. The closest she’s gotten to the...

Last year's Talk To Me was a big breakout for sibling directorial duo Danny and Michael Philippou, who graduated from creative, crazed YouTube work to a horror hit for A24 ($92 million from a $4.5 million budget). Now the company is looking to stay in business with them, and Sally Hawkins is also attached to star in their latest effort Bring Her Back.
While Deadline reports that it's an original horror movie, the other details are remaining under wraps so far. There's not even mention of who wrote the script (though Danny Philipou was among those involved in Talk To Me's writing team), and we know that the film's producing duo Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton are back for the new one.

Great news for fans of the horror flick Talk To Me. The film's creators Danny and Michael Philippou, one-time YouTube sensations now horror sensations, are working again with A24 on a new horror flick called Bring Her Back. Even sweeter is the news that the amazing, award-winning actress Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water & Paddington films) will star in the film. Plot details are being kept under wraps and production will begin production in Summer 2024. You do not bring on someone of Sally Hawkins' caliber just to fudge around trying to scare everyone with stunt scares, this one is going to dig deep. The film will be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, creators behind Talk to Me, A24’s breakout film...

Following the success of their feature debut, the horror film Talk to Me, the directing duo of Danny and Michael Philippou signed on to make a new film adaptation of the Street Fighter video game franchise, started developing a Talk to Me sequel titled Talk 2 Me, and let it be known that they had already shot some sort of Talk to Me prequel (but it’s not clear if or when we’ll get to see that footage), had an action drama project they’d like to make, and also had a horror script called Bring Her Back that they wanted to get into production. Now Deadline has confirmed that Bring Her Back is heading into production and will be made before Talk 2 Me or Street Fighter, with two-time Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins of The Shape of Water and Blue Jasmine signed on to star in the film.

Following the success of Talk To Me, directors Danny & Michael Philippou will team up with A24 again on Bring Her Back, starring Sally Hawkins.
A24 hit gold with Talk To Me, Danny & Michael Philippou’s ridiculously popular horror film featuring a creepy hand and a bunch of teenagers playing with it. It doesn’t come as a surprise that the powerhouse studio wants to team up with the brothers again for what they’re hoping will be another horror sensation.
Deadline reports that Danny & Michael Philippou are now working on a film called Bring Her Back and Sally Hawkins will play the lead. Production is due to start this summer.
No plot details as of yet, but that’s to be expected. A24 will want to keep those close to the chest until the film is nearing completion. There’s no release date either.

On the surface, “Música” feels like a very standard story about a talented guy who finds himself caught between two girls he likes, and — rather than be honest with them — starts dating both at the same time. Hilarity ensues. Thankfully, much like the fictional Rudy he plays here, the real Rudy Mancuso is more than meets the eye. His feature directorial debut is a smart and charming coming-of-age love story that is also a musical and such a good cinematic portrayal of synesthesia that it’ll make you forget all about the other, misbegotten attempts to thread the same needle (does anyone remember “August Rush”?).
We are in the era of social media movie directors, but the days of “Fred: The Movie” are thankfully gone. Between Bo Burnham’s “Eighth Grade,” and Danny and Michael Philippou’s “Talk to Me,” YouTube is starting to seem like a viable incubator for worthwhile film directors.

Ahead of the acclaimed horror flick’s arrival later this month, check out the full-length trailer for Late Night With The Devil.
There are plenty of reasons why we’re fully on board for the upcoming horror flick, Late Night With The Devil.
It has a retro 1970s feel that looks incredible. It also has the wonderful David Dastmalchian (who often appears in smaller but memorable roles) getting a leading role. Then there’s the festival buzz which has been very strong indeed. Oh, and there’s also the fact that horror hasn’t really found its feet yet here in 2024.
Whilst it wasn’t terrible, Night Swim didn’t have anywhere near the same impact that Blumhouse’s traditional year-opening horror has in the past, and we feel like we’re waiting for the first truly rousing chiller of the year to get the cinematic scares up and running.

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. Today we’re talking to Stephen Kelliher, co-founder and MD of established London-based sales and film finance outfit Bankside Films. The company played a key role in getting Australian horror hit Talk to Me off the ground and Kelliher walks us through how that project came together as well as Bankside’s hefty EFM slate this year.
Stephen Kelliher is in a good mood. The Bankside Films co-founder and managing director is coming off of the back of a banner 12 months with his London-based sales and film finance outfit, a company that not only repped worldwide sales on Irish-language Oscar nominee The Quiet Girl but also played an integral role in getting Aussie breakout supernatural horror hit Talk to Me off the ground.

We know for sure that Danny and Michael Philippou, the sibling directing duo behind the Australian horror film Talk to Me (read our review at This Link, watch our interview with the directors in the embed above) are going to be making a sequel to that movie. The film not only racked up over $90 million at the global box office, it also earned praise from the likes of Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Jordan Peele, George Miller, and Ari Aster… so it was no surprise when A24 announced they had given a greenlight to the a follow-up, titled Talk 2 Me. But while the sequel moves ahead, one person who still doesn’t know if they’re going to be involved with it is Talk to Me star Sophie Wilde.
Talk to Me marked the feature directorial debut of the Philippou brothers, who have a following of over 6 million subscribers on their YouTube channel RackaRacka.

“Talk to Me,” the creepy hit horror film directed by Australian brothers Danny and Michael Philippou’s picked up five Aacta Industry Awards on Thursday.
Their prizes included best screenplay and best editing in film. “The New Boy,” which premiered in Cannes last year, collected two Aacta Industry awards for best cinematography and best design in film.
“The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart,” “Deadloch” and “The Australian Wars” dominated the Aacta Industry awards’ television categories, with three prizes each.
The most nominated TV production of this year, “The Newsreader,” scooped the best direction in drama or comedy award.
Hit comedy “Colin From Accounts” and the recently renewed ABC drama series “Bay of Fires” came away empty-handed from the Aacta Industry Awards which focus on excellence in screen craft across film, television, documentary, short film, and digital production.
But some will have further chances on Saturday with another round of prizes in the main Aacta Awards.

Anyone who knows me would say my taste runs ever so slightly counter to the popular opinion but up top I wanted to shout out some big titles that I appreciate but didn’t quite make my favorites list. Oftentimes it feels like the days of true-blue horror icons are behind us, but Gerard Johnstone and Akela Cooper’s M3GAN was a veritable hoot that gave us an instantly iconic tiny terror in tights who more than lived up to the memes and showed everyone that hasn’t quite come around yet on HBO’s Girls just how #mother Allison Williams is. Also, that Skatt Brothers “Walk the Night” needle drop took up residence in my head last January and has not left. Talk to Me was one of the more intense in-theater experiences I had this year, and though it lost something the more I sat with it, what...

The year began, as they usually do, with so much promise. This was, after all, supposed to be the year that DC came roaring back, with Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the long-awaited The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Marvel had its own big slate. We were to be in a Shangri-La of screen superheroes. Yet in the end, it appeared the comic book movies failed audiences.
Or did they? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, based on comics from the 1980s, is one of the top animated movies of the year. David Fincher’s stylish The Killer is based on a French graphic novel. And of course, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, is a towering achievement even beyond the medium of animation.
In other corners, movies based on toys, for the most part, are looked down upon and are considered jokes. But here, too, 2023 surprised us.

Searching for and listening to movie soundtrack music for the year is an active quest of curiosity, discovery, and collage. For those fatigued and pushing through the chilliest season, I hope this mix can provide both energy and warmth, as it did to me in making it.Trends in film music over the last decade are continuing strong in 2023, particularly in the ambition of independent auteurs using complex and unusual scoring. The foundation for this mix is Angela Schanelec's beautiful and aptly titled Music, which provides both diegetic and non-diegetic moments to guide us. Samples range from The Old Oak, in which classical choral choir meets Syrian guitar and words of hope that now hit harder than ever, to a mix of sentimental strings courtesy of the legendary Joe Hisaishi. Abstract experimental sounds by two completely different kinds of artists—Harmony Korine and Thomas Newman—are mixed with sliced...

Happy New Year! 2023 has been a strange one at times, and while not the worst year in recent memory, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t ready to turn the calendar page and start something new. But that being said, there were a number of things over the course of this year that made it not only tolerable, but downright fun at times. I will always turn to art and media in stressful times, and 2023 gave me a great mixture of new films, exciting series and other projects that I found to be entertaining, enlightening, or even heart-touching.
M3GAN
2023 started off with a banger in the form of a sentient monster doll by the name of M3GAN. I haven’t had this much fun in a theater since 2021’s Malignant, which was also written by the great Akela Cooper. I had so much fun with this one.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
It’s been a great year to be a strange little guy. We’ve rolled on from Everything Everywhere All at Once sweeping the Oscars to the auspicious release of Yorgos Lanthimos’ sexy baby drama Poor Things. Our culture’s ever-increasing appetite for horror fueled hype for blockbusters about killer robot girls and homicidal animatronics. Genres were blended and transcended on and off the festival circuit, as major distributors embraced weirdness in films like Bottoms, May December, and the aforementioned Poor Things.
This has also been a year of extremes. In January Skinamarink, a $15,000 indie horror, made $2.1 million at the box office. Every favorite for Best Picture is at least 100 minutes long. Barbenheimer… happened. New heights of camp were achieved on larger scales than ever before. Casting...

While all of us old folks weren't looking, YouTube became the training ground for the next generation of incredible horror filmmakers. One high-profile example: "Talk to Me" directors Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou learned their craft by making shorts on the internet before crafting their very slick, very scary A24 horror hit. But one less high-profile example is the one that's kept me awake at night, and counts as perhaps my favorite horror experience of 2023.
Let's talk about "The Oldest View," and young director Kane Parsons.
Parsons first hit my radar when he partnered with A24 and producer James Wan to bring his surreal and frightening horror short film series "The Backrooms" to theaters. That project is still in development, but because this guy is apparently nothing if not busy, he's also been working on a separate YouTube horror short film series while that cooks. That second project is called "The Oldest View,...

A24's summer horror hit "Talk to Me" is absolutely devastating, but the movie is even sadder when you know the true story behind it. Danny and Michael Philippou crafted a supernatural narrative for their debut feature film, but they also brought in a bit of real life experience.
Mia (Sophie Wilde) is struggling to cope with the passing of her mother when she discovers a way to commune with the dead through holding an embalmed hand. Holding hands is a central motif in the film -- it's both the way characters lift each other out of hard times and get pulled further into darkness. But believe it or not, the hand itself was not even in the first iteration of the story. However, the hand quickly fell into place with the other concepts the co-writers had in mind for the movie.
Danny Phillippou explained in an interview with Indiewire:...

After almost four years into a new decade, horror remains one of the most resilient and fascinating genres of this century. In fact, it’s fair to say that the cinema of chills has only grown in esteem. About 10 years ago, some critics were dubiously suggesting that horror movies were undergoing an “elevation.” Nowadays, though, scary movies’ popularity and respect just seems nearly ubiquitous.
In a time when everything is dubiously being stripped down and sold as “content,” horror remains one of the last refuges for filmmakers to make art—or at least a wild good time with a dancing robo-doll! With that in mind, we’ve put our heads together at Den of Geek to provide you with a list of the best horror movies of 2023 so far, for your viewing terror. Enjoy.

Talk To Me
Talk To Me, Netflix, from Thursday, October 26
The idea of peer pressure takes on fresh menace in the hands of Danny and Michael Philippou. The Australian duo show a keen ear for the stresses and strains of being a young person in the modern world as they tell the story of Mia (Sophie Wilde), who is grieving in the wake of her mother's death. Although she has a strong friendship with her mate Jade (Alexandra Jensen) and Jade’s little brother Riley (Joe Bird), her grief fuels her risk-taking behaviour when a weird ceramic hand makes its way into their friendship group. The hand allows those who touch it to become briefly possessed - so long as the "door is closed" before 90 seconds is up - which is the perfect time-slot for a viral video. The rush of peer approval, magnified by Mia's existing mental state, is shown.

Indie films have scored some impressive figures at Spanish box office this year.
As the Spanish film industry comes together at Valladolid International Film Week (known locally as the Seminici), one of the big talking points will be how to make independent films stand out at the local box office.
Although Spain’s box office in the year to mid-October has grossed €400m, 35% higher than the same period in 2022, it is still 17% lower than the 2015-2019 pre-Covid average.
US studio blockbusters led the charge, headed by Barbie ($35.2m), Super Mario Bros. Movie ($29m), Avatar: The Way Of Water, ($26.9m) Oppenheimer...

Halloween is perfectly suited for watching movies at home – it’s the time of year where, conceivably, things start getting cooler and a cozy night in with your favorite horror movie is at its most appealing. And thankfully there are plenty of new Blu-rays and 4K Ultra HD discs out there to fill every need, for the fans of the mega-scary, to those who just want to watch a semi-spooky romp with the family.

The year’s scariest sleeper hit, Talk to Me became A24’s second highest grossing horror film with $48 million at the domestic box office on a $4.5 million budget. The Australian movie marks the feature debut of co-directors Danny and Michael Philippou, who rose to prominence with their YouTube channel, RackaRacka.
The film’s home video release includes an audio commentary with the excitable Australian twins. They begin by stating that they won’t discuss the movie’s themes, as they want to leave it open to interpretation (although they let a few hints slip), but they have plenty of other insight to share.
Here are seven things I learned from the Talk to Me commentary.
1. The opening shot took 10 takes.
Talk to Me opens with an ambitious, two-minute tracking shot through a house. It took 10 takes to get it right, which is the maximum amount they could do since they...

Adelaide teens take an occult party game too far in this terrific debut from Australian YouTube celebrities (and twin brothers) Danny and Michael Philippou. Inventive, creepy and confidently directed, it’s one of the best horror films of the year.
After a deeply disturbing prologue, shot in an impressive single take, the film centres on Mia (Sophie Wilde), who’s grown more and more distant from her father (Marcus Johnson) since the traumatic loss of her mother, two years previously. Accordingly, Mia spends most of her time at her best friend Jade’s (Alexandra Jensen) house, which is slightly awkward, because Jade is dating Mia’s ex-boyfriend, Daniel (Otis Dhanji).

This year, "Talk to Me" made quite a splash. After debuting to great reviews at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, the movie became A24's biggest horror film of all time at the domestic box office. The film, from directing duo Danny & Michael Philippou, follows the dangerous new teen trend of summoning spirits through an embalmed hand and letting them inhabit your body for roughly a minute, all so you can get a viral video out of it and make your drunk friends laugh. But of course, one of these supernatural thrills goes wrong, turning lives upside down and bringing evil into their homes.

A24 hit big with their acclaimed horror movie Talk to Me earlier this year, which is now available on Digital outlets with a 4K and Blu-ray release set for October 3, 2023.
In celebration of the film’s Digital release today, A24 has also put up for grabs a screen-accurate replica of the “Party Hand” from Talk to Me, and it’s available now in their shop!
In the film, the mysterious prop is said to be the severed, embalmed hand of a powerful medium, and it’s used to conjure spirits. The basic gist is that you hold the hand and speak the words “talk to me” aloud, inviting in whatever the hell decides to come through from the other side. From there, you can let go of the hand or let the spirit inside of you. The latter option is essentially the film’s unique version of getting high, becoming...

Death, taxes, and low-budget horror movies becoming breakout smash hits upon release -- more and more, these seem to be the only certainties in life and, needless to say, we're excited about one of them more than the others. Everything about the success of "Talk to Me" defies convention, from the unusual career trajectory of sibling directing duo Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou to the fact that a sequel has already been put into development -- a rarity for indie studio A24. But the long odds haven't stopped the film from flying high and scaring the heck out of audiences around the world, and after its incredibly profitable theatrical run, horror fans are about to have the chance to catch "Talk to Me" without even having to step outside the door.

In its second weekend in theaters, MGM and director Emma Seligman’s teen comedy Bottoms broke into the top ten films for the weekend (no. 7) on 715 screens, a major North America expansion from a 10-theater opening last week. An estimated $3 million gross for the three days, and $3.6 million for the four-day Labor Day holiday means the film will continue to expand, with about 1,200 screens planned for next weekend.
Estimated cume to date is $4.3+ million for the $11.3 million-budget title produced by Elizabeth Banks, Max Handelman and Alison Small. It’s holding a 95% Fresh rating from critics and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes with exit polling continuing strong in week two as it ventured outside the coasts, with organic social buzz and young audiences driving ticket sales.

Some got the impression that the prequel was a full-length feature film. That wouldn't be too far-fetched, given that last year director Ti West revealed he'd secretly shot a prequel to his slasher movie "X," and "Pearl" landed in theaters just a few months later.
Now, the Brothers Philippou have offered some clarification in the October 2023 issue of Empire, explaining that the prequel is actually a "series of clips following Duckett's story, that were designed to be uploaded anonymously online. It's not a movie, by any stretch."
