Marvel Studios’ animated anthology series What If…?, created by A.C. Bradley based on the Marvel Comic series is the studios’ first animated series. The series dwells on exploring alternate timelines in the multiverse that showcase what would happen if major moments from the MCU movies occurred differently. Jeffrey Wright stars as The Watcher and also narrates the series.
The first season of What If…?, was a part of Phase Four of the MCU with nine episodes premiering, and the second season of the series has been included in Phase Five. The series has received positive responses from the audience and the critics with special mentions for the voice acting, creative and impressive storylines, and animation. Reports have suggested that two impactful characters could make a return to the MCU via a very interesting storyline.

At a time when the Marvel Cinematic Universe feels more and more creatively stale, with the box office reflecting this, "Marvel's What If...?" is a breath of fresh air. The animated show offers writers and animators an opportunity to tell the kind of wildly creative stories that the McU's movies can't — both because they have to adhere to the Marvel formula and continuity, and because of budget constraints.
Though the first season was a bit formulaic, with most of the episodes following the plot of a previously-released Marvel movie (but with a little twist), the second season did a better job of exploring the infinite possibilities of the MCU multiverse. As Vanessa Armstrong wrote in her review for /Film, season 2 was "a zany, refreshing mix of stories."

‘What If…?’ brought a breath of fresh air to the MCU. Despite the initial mixed reception of the first season, its success led to the approval of additional seasons, expanding the multiverse by drawing inspiration from various notable storylines. The unconventional release of Season 2 unfolded over nine days, with each episode serving as a special holiday gift for fans. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced the development of the second season in December 2019; originally planned for 10 episodes, but due to Covid-19-related production delays, both seasons ultimately comprised nine episodes each.

‘What If…?’ was a breath of fresh air in the MCU; despite the first season of the show receiving a somewhat mixed reception from fans, it was successful enough to warrant additional seasons and expand the multiverse that the creators have been working on drawing loose inspiration from several notable storylines.
Season 2 was released in a somewhat unconventional manner over the course of nine days; a single episode was released, like a gift for fans to unwrap over the holiday season. In December 2019, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced the development of a second season for the animated series “What If…?,” consisting of 10 episodes. Due to Covid-19-related production delays during the first season, both the first and second seasons ended up having nine episodes each.

Marvel's "What If..." has employed a mix of reprisals and recasts from the movies. Captain Peggy Carter may have the super soldier serum, and Strange Supreme went down a darker path, but they're still played by Hayley Atwell and Benedict Cumberbatch like the originals. Tragically, T'Challa-as-Star-Lord also went down as Chadwick Boseman's final performance.
On the other hand: Mick Wingert fills in for Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Lake Bell plays Black Widow instead of Scarlett Johansson, and season 1 big bad Infinity Ultron was voiced by Ross Marquand, not James Spader.
"What If..." season 2 brings in two characters not seen in season 1, Hela (the villain of "Thor: Ragnarok") and Wenwu (the villain of "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings"), and pairs them up in episode 7: "What If... Hela Found the Ten Rings?" The episode splits the difference on recasting: Wenwu is voiced by Feodor Chin,...

This article contains spoilers for "What If...?" season 2.
"What If...?" season 2 only just premiered on Disney+ and brought with it another round of fascinating adventures through the multiverse. The Marvel Cinematic Universe could have turned out any number of ways -- had certain characters made different choices along the way. This new season kicks off with a Nebula-focused episode titled "What If... Nebula Joined the Nova Corps?" As the title implies, it sees the adopted daughter of Thanos taking something of a hero's turn as a member of the Nova Corps. But that gritty hero's journey almost wandered down a dark path.
Showrunner A.C. Bradley recently sat down with IGN to break down the show's second season. In discussing the season premiere, which was written by Matthew Chauncey, Bradley explained that the whole thing came about simply because the show's creatives love Karen Gillan's work as Nebula (and...

Marvel's "What If...?" season 1 had a lot of conceptual promise and so-so execution. Seeing the promise of the multiverse fulfilled via a highly imaginative animated anthology series was exciting, yet the art style and animation left a lot to be desired.
For season 2, Marvel doubled down on the zaniness of the concept, serving up even wilder stories and visuals. As Vanessa Armstrong wrote in her review for /FIlm, season 2 is "a zany, refreshing mix of stories." There's a "Wild Races" episode, a "Die Hard" homage, an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's comic book story "Marvel 1602," and even an episode about a new hero named Kahhori, a First Nations woman of the Mohawk tribe.
Then there's the episode that almost was -- one that was deemed too dark for "What If...?" season 2. Speaking with IGN, head writer and creator A.C. Bradley talked about how the second season of the show was...

Season 2 of Disney+’s animated What If…? anthology answered nine new questions in Season 2, including: “What if Nebula joined the Nova Corps?” “What if Peter Quill attacked Earth’s Mightiest Heroes?” And, “What if the Avengers assembled in the year 1602?”
But one question that the showrunner for Seasons 1 and 2 also asked and answered will never see the light of day, seeing as it was a “very dark” episode involving your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

Years ago, there was an idea to bring together a group of remarkable people leading blockbuster movies, to unite them onscreen and eventually crack open their universe with new worlds and realities. It was an idea called the multiverse, and though it persists, it hasn’t panned out quite as expected — except with Marvel Studios’ “What If…?”
Written by A.C. Bradley and directed by Bryan Andrews, the animated anthology series takes familiar Marvel characters and comic book breakouts and sets them on brand-new adventures, set in parallel universes where the events of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are immaterial. On “What If…?” it doesn’t matter if a plot line fits into the MCU canon, if a character behaves according to specific events they experienced in the movies, or even whether they have the same powers and origin story. Like comic books themselves, the episodes of “What If…?” offer built-in resets to keep stories fresh.

In Jon Favreau's 2008 film "Iron Man," the title hero (Robert Downey Jr.) was assisted in his high-tech superhero lab by an artificially intelligent butler-like presence named J.A.R.V.I.S. Iron Man's digital butler not only wrangled the hero's complicated engineering projects, but also controlled the even-higher-tech devices in his lab. When Iron Man went out on patrol, J.A.R.V.I.S.'s voice could be heard inside his helmet. J.A.R.V.I.S. was voiced by Paul Bettany. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continued to grow, so too did Iron Man's computerized friend. Eventually, J.A.R.V.I.S. was shunted into an indestructible android body and renamed Vision (also Bettany).
When Vision became sentient and autonomous, that meant Tony Stark had to program a new computer helper, and invented F.R.I.D.A.Y. (voiced by Kerry Condon...

There's been much talk of late about how the Marvel Cinematic Universe is on the decline, that superhero movies have become oversaturated, and that the general public has been fed at least one multiverse too many.
There's truth to that statement if box office numbers are any indication. And I'd argue that some of that decline is in the over-bloated plotlines that fans got tired of keeping straight. But there's an upside to the multiverse phenomenon: Setting stories in different worlds with different rules opens the door to fresh storytelling. Even more so, telling a tale in one of these alternative realities unshackles the writer from being beholden to the machinations of the overarching sagas the MCU likes to tell.
That's been the appeal of Marvel's animated series, "What If...?" The show takes the multiverse premise and is given the freedom to create fantastical situations that would never occur on...

Even with its shortcomings, Marvel's "What If...?" season 1 is the closest the Marvel Cinematic Universe has come to realizing the true potential of the multiverse in terms of storytelling. The hope, then, is that the animated series will dispense with the training wheels entirely with its next batch of episodes and really have fun with the concept, rather than restricting itself to re-imagining events from MCU movies and TV shows past. And so far, it appears season 2 will do just that, with an episode inspired by the Neil Gaiman-penned Elizabethan era comic arc "1602" and another one centered on a brand-new character in the form of the Mohawk hero Kahhori.
Of course, there's still plenty of room for new stories featuring old favorites, including treasured supporting players and frequent comic relief sidekicks Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau). Those two specifically will team up in "What If.

When Marvel's "What If...?" season 2 premieres later this month, fans will be taking another look at some other pockets of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Like last season, the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) observes (and sometimes takes part in) some alternate versions of the lives of our villains and heroes. This time around, we're also getting a brand new hero named Kahhori, a First Nations woman of the Mohawk tribe. Kahhori was created for the animated series with a lot of influence and input from the Mohawk people. The episode is done completely in the Mohawk language with subtitles, and the people running the show are very excited about it.

Marvel and Disney+ have been sprinkling out little details about season 2 of the Disney+ series "What If... ?" over the last few months, like a proper introduction to the Alternate Gamora, as well as the inclusion of Marvel's first Mohawk superhero, Kahhori, who was created specifically for the show. The character's inclusion was actually spoiled early when she appeared as part of a limited-edition Funko collectable, so it's clear that Marvel has high expectations for the new episode. The series has been called "the ultimate superhero fan fiction," and boasts some truly incredible animation.
The first season of the hit series looked at what would happen to all our favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe characters if things had been different. In season 1, we saw what could have happened (and maybe did in a different part of the multiverse) if Peggy Carter got the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers and became Captain Carter.

The animated streaming series ‘What If…?’ is one of the most unique and most interesting MCU projects. Not only because of the fact that it was the first animated piece of MCU content but also because everything that happens in this series is non-canonical events that show what would happen if some key moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe had played out differently.
The series’s first season featured nine episodes, some of which were amazing and some were… not. The series features the voice talent of Jeffrey Wright as the Watcher, and various MCU actors have returned to voice their respective characters, with a few exceptions, where new actors were hired to replace actors from live action.
The first season dealt with many key events from the Infinity Saga, and the second one will continue to do so, but it will also dip fingers into the ongoing Multiverse Saga.

When A.C. Bradley was hired to write on the 2022 Disney+ series “Ms. Marvel,” part of her job entailed going to set every day to help with re-writing scenes on the fly while the show was being filmed.
“It was a mixture of everything from wanting to add new characters into the show to needing to change things because of location,” Bradley tells Variety. Just one example: The day the production was set to shoot a chase sequence at Marriott hotel, she helped to add a beat where the chase entered the kitchen because it was nearby. “Why not use what you have?”
This kind of scenario is, of course, no longer possible during the ongoing writers strike. “Pens down” means no WGA member can write or change scripts whatsoever, before, during or after production. In many cases, that has meant that showrunners have left their shows entirely, like “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power...

Exclusive: Will Gluck is getting back to his rom-com roots and looks to have landed two of the most sought-after stars in town for his next project. Sources tell Deadline that Sony Pictures has acquired an untitled R-rated romantic comedy, with Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell set to star and Gluck directing.
While the plot is being kept under wraps, the project is based on Ilana Wolpert’s script, which Gluck is rewriting.
Joe Roth, Jeff Kirschenbaum and Gluck (who with his Olive Bridge Entertainment has a first-look deal at Sony) are producing, with Sweeney exec producing for Fifty-Fifty Films. Natalie Sellers and Alyssa Altman are exec producing for Rk Films.
Sony landed the coveted package at the end of last year and after figuring out Sweeney’s schedule with her Euphoria dates. Shooting is expected to start at the end of next month.

Let's think of Marvel's phases like albums. If Phase One is a game-changing debut album, and Phase Two is the sophomore slump beater, Phase Three makes the MCU pop royalty -- it's been at the top of the charts for years. By this point, Marvel feels too big to fail. Then, enter Phase Four.
Phase Four finds the McU's messy imperialist pop mode. At this stage, it has nothing left to lose, so it throws out all sorts of tones and approaches to see what sticks because it can. That makes it torn between bolder artistic instincts and reliable hit-making. Some moments rip while others land with a thud. Phase Four is like U2's "Pop" or Taylor Swift's "Reputation." As a cohesive record, it doesn't work. But its disparate collection of tracks includes some Hall of Fame ballot efforts and ones that audiences can and will return to again.

This article contains Black Panther: Wakanda Forever spoilers
It’s finally time to dive into Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, as Ryan Coogler has the honor of rounding off Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As with any MCU outing, there’s a slew of Easter eggs that reference everyone from Ant-Man to Ultron, tragic tributes to Chadwick Boseman, and a setup for Thunderbolts. However, for eagle-eyed nerf herders or moof milkers, you might’ve spotted some nods to a certain galaxy far, far away.
During the scene where Shuri (Letitia Wright) and Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) are kidnapped by Namor’s forces, they are imprisoned by the entrance to Talokan. As Shuri is Wakandan royalty, she is told to dress like a princess and is given some ceremonial garments to wear. It’s here that Riri makes a joke that it’s a trap and that women are always made to dress by their captors.

The Incredible Hulk was released a little over a month after Iron Man launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film introduced Edward Norton as Bruce Banner/Hulk, but by the time the character reappeared in The Avengers, Norton had been replaced by Mark Ruffalo. While Edward Norton remains a fan of the franchise, The Incredible Hulk remains his one-and-only appearance in the MCU, but She-Hulk director Kat Coiro recently said that they discussed bringing him back for the Disney+ series.

Boseman received a posthumous win for outstanding character voice-over for T’Challa in the animated series “What If…?” from Disney+ and Marvel Studios.

Marvel Studios made hundreds of fans quite — um — animated as it kicked off its very first panel centered on a growing slate of animated content.
The presentation and expansion comes after the studio’s inaugural series, What If…?, garnered three Emmy-nominations. The response to the show saw Marvel green light season two and announce last year series such as Spider-Man: Freshman Year, a revival of 1990s cartoon X-Men ’97, and a shorts series, I Am Groot. All those series were showcased during the panel, eliciting oohs and aahs from the gleeful faithful.
“When we did the first season of What If…?, we realized we wanted to do more,” said Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ head of streaming, television and animation. The longtime Marvel exec, who began in the studio’s live-action division, said that growing up, animation was his gateway to cinema and comic book.

At the Marvel Studios Animation Comic-Con panel on Friday, producer Brad Winterbaum and the rest of his creative team showed off some rough animation from the very first Marvel Studios “X-Men” project, “X-Men ’97.” They also showed an entire, fully animated episode from the upcoming “What If…?” Season 2.
First, let’s discuss “X-Men ’97.” A continuation of the beloved 1990s animated series, which ran for five seasons between 1992 to 1997, this new iteration is meant to be a direct continuation, both stylistically and in terms of tone. “We fell in love of the melodrama of the X-Men. That’s what we’re always talking about and joking about – it’s a big soap opera. Who wants to kiss who, who is looking at who awkwardly in a picture frame,” the new series’ head writer Beau DeMayo explained. “But that is what they are at their core.”

With Tom Hiddleston reprising his beloved character, the six episodes of Marvel Studios’ “Loki,” which premiered on Disney+ in June 2021, were a massive success for the phase four entry. Disney and Marvel are hoping to have a similar success after the limited series “WandaVision” led the Emmy nomination field with 23. After initial plans to submit it in limited series, Variety has learned exclusively that “Loki” will seek Emmy love in the drama categories.
Disney’s original plan was to submit the third MCU TV series in the limited series field alongside its other MCU counterparts “Hawkeye” with Jeremy Renner and “Moon Knight” with Oscar Isaac. But, unfortunately, that’s not so simple because of “Loki’s” post-credits scene in the final episode that reads: “Loki will return in season 2.”

The X-Men are back — just not in live action.
Marvel Studios announced on Friday that the company is expanding its slate of animated series for Disney Plus with three new shows: “X-Men ’97,” “Spider-Man: Freshman Year,” and “Marvel Zombies.”
After Disney purchased 20th Century Fox in 2019, and the “X-Men” movie franchise was on its last legs with the poorly received “Dark Phoenix” and “The New Mutants,” many observers expected Marvel Studios to reboot the X-Men and reintegrate the characters back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Instead, for its first swing at the team of powerful mutant superheroes, the company is reaching back to its own origin story: “X-Men ’97” will be a continuation of the beloved 1990s “X-Men” animated series that ran for five seasons on the Fox network from 1992 through 1997. (The following story contains spoilers from the second episode of Marvel’s “What If…” on Disney+)
The first episode of “What If…,” which sees Peggy Carter become the world’s first super-soldier instead of Steve Rogers, largely follows the same script from “Captain America: The First Avenger,” albeit with a few gender-specific tweaks. The second episode of the Marvel Studios animated series, which swaps in T’Challa for Peter Quill as Star-Lord, completely reshapes the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“He’s not a character that arcs so much himself. He’s a character that changes the world around him,” head writer A.C. Bradley tells TheWrap. “We came up with this idea that he kind of becomes a Robin Hood. He is still princely and king-like, in the fact that he is all about creating the best world for people, creating the best life. He’s still very true to who he is.

What if Peggy Carter became the first Captain America to battle the Nazis and Hydra? What if Black Panther became Star Lord and fought The Collector? And what if Nick Fury was forced to team up with Loki to solve the murders of several would-be Avengers? All of those hypothetical questions are brought to life in the initial three episodes of “What If…?,” Marvel’s first animated anthology (currently streaming on Disney+), which turns the MCU on its head — “Twilight Zone” style — with 10 wild alternate timelines in Season 1, narrated by Jeffrey Wright’s omniscient Watcher.
“So often in these kinds of media, women write the female characters and writers of color write the heroes of color, and white men get to write everything else,” said creator A.C. Bradley (“Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia”). “And the fact that they were trusting me, a woman, to tell an Iron Man story, to go have fun with Thor,...

This review contains spoilers for What If…? episode 1.
What If…? is the latest Marvel Studios small screen project to arrive on Disney+ after much fanfare. The animated anthology show, created by Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia writer A.C. Bradley and Marvel storyboard vet Bryan Andrews, aims to explore alternate timelines in the MCU multiverse. In order to fully grasp the basic premise of What If…? as a whole it helps to have watched Marvel’s Loki, which recently introduced the multiverse to the MCU.
What If…? episode 1, “What If… Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?,” focuses on a (mainly) WWII-era version of Peggy Carter who made a key alternate choice that affected the creation of Captain America in a major way.
It’s a fun episode! Your mileage may vary depending on how much you love Peggy Carter, but since I love her a whole lot I had a good time watching this.
