Allegra Hamilton Brooksbank is an independent writer, story editor and teacher. Her belief in the power of storytelling is one of her greatest assets. She began her career writing for screenwriter and author Chris Keane ("The Hunter" - Paramount and "Dangerous Company" - Warner Brothers) and currently works with a number of authors and screenwriters from around the world.
In 2011, Allegra became the Director of Handheld Stories, a Dubai-based NGO, providing film-making workshops for communities in critical circumstances. Allegra has run workshops worldwide, from Dharavi in Mumbai, India to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in the US, making it possible for children to tell their own stories and highlight the issues that matter to them.
In 2012, Allegra wrote and directed her own short film for Image Nation Abu Dhabi. "Longing" tells the story of a young girl struggling to come to terms with the loss of her Ethiopian nanny, who must return to her own country and the children she left behind.
Allegra is a youth mentor at the Doha Film Institute where her organization, Documentary Workshops, is invited every year to teach the Camera Kids film production workshop. In the space of just five weeks, Documentary Workshops produces ten short films, both narrative and documentary, conceived by the kids in the workshop. Topics have included everything from sexual inequality to superheroes. The results are screened annually at the Aiyal Youth Film Festival in Qatar.
Allegra is a graduate of Harvard University where she studied literature and anthropology. She resides in South Florida.
