For the discerning science fiction fan, this is the best of the Eastern-bloc Cold War Sci-fi epics, a genuinely brilliant and warmly human ‘Voyage to the End of the Universe,’ restored in 4k resolution. It’s from before 2001: A Space Odyssey, and has an equally wondrous but totally different vision of the future.

Welcome back to another edition of Fantasy Fridays, where two real-life best friends who ended up working at Lrm together get to pretend to be Studio Execs by casting, staffing, and/or pitching fanboy-centric projects. Last week, we made our case for what the next wave of Marvel series on Netflix should center on. This week we turn our attention towards DC's Shazam!
This week gave us the first real updates on Shazam! in quite some time. With both producer Hiram Garcia and star Dwayne Johnson (who's locked in to play Black Adam) taking to social media to hype up how well a key meeting with the WB/DC brass went. Johnson made a statement about how the future of the DC Extended Universe looks to embrace an outlook of "Hope, Optimism, and Fun," and that got us thinking about how to best tackle a Shazam! movie that wants to be all of those things.

A good Samaritan was shot and killed Monday when he intervened in an alleged violent domestic dispute outside a Walgreens pharmacy in Texas, People confirms. The man, identified as Anthony "T.J." Antell, was at the Arlington, Texas, pharmacy when 22-year-old suspect Ricci Bradden shot his wife during a parking lot confrontation, the Arlington Police Department said in a press release and arrest warrant affidavit obtained by People. Antell, a 35-year-old CrossFit gym owner who served as a Marine, witnessed Bradden shoot his wife in the foot and retrieved a gun from his car to try and stop Bradden from leaving the scene,...

In a new promotional video posted to the official Marvel Twitter account in anticipation of Captain America: Civil War, stars Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. brag about their respective superheroes before asking a “completely random stranger” to choose a side. That stranger evidently turns out to be the legendary Stan “The Man” Lee, who is asked by the abovementioned Civil War stars to choose either #TeamCap or #TeamIronMan. The comic book creator’s response is not at all surprising, but watch the promo vid for yourself. Watch @ChrisEvans and @RobertDowneyJr ask a totally & completely random stranger to choose #TeamCap or #TeamIronMan!https://t.co/zLmMC5HQ3n — Marvel Entertainment (@Marvel) April 29, 2016 Directed by Anthony & Joe Russo and from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. The man who allegedly shot to death Texas Texas Deputy Darren Goforth in Harris County last August has been deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial for the officer's murder. People confirms that Shannon Miles, 31, will be committed to a state hospital for the next four months, after which he'll be reassessed by psychiatrists. Texas District Judge Susan Brown made the determination that Miles' trial should be postponed until he is found competent enough for the impending court proceedings, officials tell People. Miles' defense attorney, Anthony Osso, has argued in open court that his client has long suffered from schizophrenia, according to court sources.

42, The Power Of Three, Dinosaurs On A Spaceship and more - the Doctor Who work to date of the show's next showrunner...
Who is Chris Chibnall? You might know him as the creator of Born & Bred, Law & Order: UK and Broadchurch amongst others, but as readers of this site, it's more likely that you know his scripts from Doctor Who and his tenure as head writer of Torchwood. On Friday, the BBC announced that Steven Moffat will be stepping down as the showrunner of Who after next year's tenth series (since its revival), to be replaced by Chibnall in 2018.
Over the weekend alone, there has already been a lot written and said in speculation about what the new show-runner, Doctor Who's third since Russell T. Davies combined the roles of head writer and executive producer when he revived the series in 2005. I, for one, welcome our...

Ahead of American Ultra’s release in UK cinemas, we look at the rise of the stoner in film, from the 30s to the present...
"The motion picture you are about to witness may startle you. It would not have been possible, otherwise, to sufficiently emphasize the frightful toll of the new drug menace which is destroying the youth of America in alarmingly increasing numbers. Marihuana is that drug - a violent narcotic - an unspeakable scourge - the Real Public Enemy Number One!
So reads the opening crawl to the now infamous film Reefer Madness. Originally released in 1936, it was designed as a hard-hitting expose of marijuana and its inherent dangers. The drug could cause "violent, uncontrollable laughter," the movie's introduction read. It could induce "dangerous hallucinations," "monstrous extravagances," all eventually leading to "shocking acts of physical violence... ending often in incurable insanity."

What would you do if life stood still? Now I’m not talking about the world continually frozen, like a projector stuck on one frame of film (maybe a better modern analogy would be a DVD unable to move past an image, perhaps with that annoying “buffer circle” spinning). I mean what if you, yourself, never changed and remained your current age forever. No wrinkles, no grey hairs, and no internal breakdowns (the plumbing works fine, muscles and joints in great shape). That’s been one of the major benefits of vampirism (like the eternal ten-year old Kirsten Dunst in Interview With The Vampire), a theme of fairy tales (Sleeping Beauty), and science fiction (The Man Who Cheated Death, the Cocoon flicks). Now comes a film that plays with that notion in a more modern, realistic fashion. Call it a modern romantic fable, or the ultimate May-December love story. Or...

After taking on the Star Wars prequel trilogy, "everyone thought I was a horrible actress", says Natalie Portman.
Following her superb debut in Luc Besson's Leon, back when she was just 13 years old, Natalie Portman attracted the attention of the Star Wars casting team. Thus, she was cast as Padme Amidala in George Lucas' Star Wars prequel trilogy, kicking off with The Phantom Menace, and ending with 2005's Revenge Of The Sith.
However, whilst the movies made an awful lot of money, there was a consequence for Portman, who was stuck in what ultimately seemed quite an unforgiving role. Talking to New Yorker magazine, she revealed that once Star Wars had come out, "everyone thought I was a horrible actress. I was in the biggest-grossing movie of the decade, and no director wanted to work with me".
The man who came to her rescue was the late, great Mike Nichols,...

Coming Soon caught up with Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Anthony and Joe Russo at Amoeba Music in Hollywood California, where they were on hand to host a special signing event for the home video release of the Marvel sequel. After joking around with Joe about his own cameo in the movie as one of the surgeons working on Nick Fury, the director brings up another interesting appearance (well, his vehicle anyway!) from, what sounds like, an established Marvel Comics character. When Nick Fury is being attacked in the streets, he gets the moment he needs to escape when a yellow Penske truck slams into his attackers. Later, when Agent Sitwell is thrown into traffic, guess what hits him? Not just a Penske truck, but the Russos reveal, the very same Penske truck. "The man who drives that truck," Joe deadpans, joking that the driver is a candidate for...

Beverly Hills — Laika's "The Boxtrolls" saw its world premiere over the weekend at the Venice Film Festival, the third in a line of movies from the Portland-based animation studio that have aimed to push the medium at every step. Directed by Anthony Stacchi and Graham Annable, the film is, like all Laika product, its own world, a dank, cockney yarn that, as ever, serves as a showcase for the company's craft prowess. I recently sat down with Stacchi, Annable and Laika CEO Travis Knight to discuss adapting Alan Snow's mammoth book "Here Be Monsters!," the use of increasingly sophisticated computer tools to aid stop motion animation and the vision for the company going forward. You can read through the back and forth below, and don't forget to check out Catherine Bray's glowing review from the Lido. "The Boxtrolls" opens in theaters Sept. 26. *** HitFix: Anthony, we met briefly at...
