“How many of you remember Asl Barbie?” Deaf West Theatre artistic director DJ Kurs signed from the stage at Westwood’s Regency Village Theatre last Thursday night, referring to Sign Language Barbie, which Mattel released in 2000. “Her hand was permanently stuck in the ‘I love you’ hand shape. Can you imagine how awkward that would be in real life? Like if she waved to the Ups driver, she would be like, ‘I love you?’”
The audience giggled as Kurs continued. “But seriously, that was a landmark moment back in those days. Barbie, using sign language, was in every store 20 years ago,” he said. “And tonight we celebrate a similar landmark: Children all across the country will be able to tune into the Asl version of Barbie the movie.”

Companies spend big bucks to advertise during the Super Bowl, but very few invested in LGBTQ representation this year, according to GLAAD’s Visibility Project.
The media advocacy organization reported that among the commercials that aired during the big game on Sunday, just four explicitly featured LGBTQ people — Rakuten (Christian Siriano), Gm x Netflix (Jonathan Van Ness and Antoni Porowski), Google Pixel (Doja Cat) and Doritos (Elton John) — while the NFL’s own halftime spot, “Run With It,” included Billie Jean King. In all cases, the celebrities appeared in brief cameos and the spots did not include “LGBTQ storytelling,” as GLAAD put it. (McDonald’s, however, did air a pre-Super Bowl spot that featured a queer and non-celebrity couple.)
“It’s unfortunate that LGBTQ-inclusive advertising was not more prevalent during the Super Bowl this year,” GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. “Though we saw a similar...

Dr. Max Goodwin’s (Ryan Eggold) love life may have been left up in the air at the end of the New Amsterdam series finale, but a couple episodes earlier, he did make a choice between ex-fiancée Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) and new love interest Dr. Elizabeth Wilder (Sandra Mae Frank). In Episode 11, “Falling,” directed by after Max learned Helen was back in New York and she reached out to him to meet up, he avoided her by taking everyone on a day trip hiking (which took a dangerous turn). Wilder, however, told him he should go, so he could look at Helen and decide what he really wanted because “you can’t run forever. At least not with me.” He did go to the bar, but only watched Helen from outside before going to see Wilder. “You told me to make a choice,” he said before kissing her.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for New Amsterdam Season 5 Episode 11 “Falling.”] Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) goes from “how can I help?” to “how can I avoid?” in the last New Amsterdam winter premiere. After learning his ex-fiancée Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) is back in New York, Max is struggling. Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims) laughs when he finds out, but Max doesn’t think it’s funny, especially given that the progress he’d been making with Dr. Elizabeth Wilder (Sandra Mae Frank) ground to a screeching halt the moment that he saw his ex on the TV. Max doesn’t know if he’s going to see her — she hasn’t even reached out — but Reynolds thinks he should at least be curious if she still has feelings for him or came to New York for a reason. But, as Max admits, he can’t open that door and fall back into something he worked ...

The hospital drama’s Season 4 finale was a rough one: Medical director Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) was left at the altar; psychiatrist Iggy Frome’s (Tyler Labine) husband asked him to leave their brownstone; and ER doc Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery) split from her girlfriend. “We blew up everyone’s life so they can help each other recover,” explains showrunner David Schulner. In Season 5 — New Amsterdam’s last — he wants to remind fans why they first fell in love with the show, which means bringing the core characters together more and “trying to heal everyone’s fatal flaw.” But first, Max will take Helen Sharpe’s (Freema Agyeman) abandonment “really hard,” and Bloom lands a “very surprising roommate,” Schulner hints. Following her promotion to series regular, Sandra Mae Frank’s passionate Dr. Elizabeth Wilder becomes an integral part the team. Keep your eyes peeled for “unexpected romance,” but don’t...

I am at a loss.
What an utterly frustrating, underwhelming, and disappointing season finale for what is inarguably the weakest season of this series.
By the end of New Amsterdam Season 4 Episode 22, all one can ask is, what was the point? As in, what was the point of any of it? I'd like that 40-something minutes of my time back.
The hour was dull, trite, and thoughtless. And there's no nicer way of phrasing it; there simply isn't.
They tossed another grenade into each relationship, primarily Sharpwin, with Max waiting on the rooftop dressed to the nines for their wedding and Helen hysterically apologizing from the wasteland where all good things have gone to die, London.
But aside from that, nothing about this installment felt like a finale. It wasn't even up to the standards of a regular installment of the series.

News of the promotion comes two months on from the stunning announcement that the Ryan Eggold-fronted medical drama will end its run next season.

In last Tuesday’s This Is Us, as Rebecca neared the end of her time on Earth, an old friend showed up to offer a sort of benediction. “You’re as tough as they come, Rebecca Pearson,” Dr. K told her, smiling kindly. “And you, my dear, have earned a rest.”
Now, on the eve of the NBC drama’s series finale, the hour has arrived to swap out “Rebecca Pearson” for “Mandy Moore,” and “a rest” for “some Emmy love.” In other words: It’s time for Moore to get the respect and admiration she’s surely earned over the past six seasons.
