Another of Kitano's masterpiece is also his most commercially successful film, taking $23.7 million in the Japanese box office and $31.1 million worldwide, mainly because of its wide release in the US that reached 55 theaters. Furthermore, Kitano won the Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival and yet again, plenty of awards from all over the world, and finally some from the Japanese Academy, although he was solely mentioned in the editing one, along Yoshinori Ohta.

Although the second season does not have the element of surprise, as first seasons usually do, it is easy to say that the creators of “Tokyo Vice Season 2” did an excellent job this time also, by focusing even more to the series' best aspect, its characters.

Dwayne Johnson and Cody Rhodes feud seems to be one of the most historic wrestling events. Each day, with each passing hour, the anticipation among fans and spectators keeps building up ever since The Rock challenged the American Nightmare for a tag team match on the opening night of the upcoming WrestleMania 40.

Yet the fans feel Johnson might have taken things too far during the promo while taking digs at his rival. In a nearly 21-minute long video posted on his social media, Johnson not only said some nice words for Rhodes but also called his dog, Pharaoh. After several years of working as an assistant director for Suzuki Seijun, Hasebe Yasuharu finally got the chance to direct his own film with 1966’s Black Tight Killers. While Suzuki’s irreverent whatsit Tokyo Drifter went on to international fame that same year, Hasebe’s debut lurked in relative obscurity outside of Japan. It’s an understandable fate since Suzuki’s relentless abstraction of both narrative and action accounts for much of what still makes it feel vital and fresh nearly six decades later, and Black Tight Killers sticks more tightly to the type of mukokuseki akushon (“borderless action”) film that Nikkatsu Studios had been churning out since the late ’50s.
Still, Black Tight Killers is an immensely stylish film in its own right. And it functions as a fascinating time capsule of a post-war Japan at a time when its youth culture was embracing the spirit of the Swinging ’60s.

A24 has acquired theatrical distribution rights to “Sing Sing,” five days after the Colman Domingo-starring drama made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The indie banner confirmed the deal Friday evening.

Despite netting awards for Best Film, Best Actress (Kyoko Enami) and Best Director from Kinema Junpo and Best Film, Best Cinematography and Best Sound Recording from Mainichi, “Tsugaru Folk Song” is a largely forgotten title by Atg, which, however, has nothing to be shy of from the rest of the titles of the company. Tsugaru-jamisen or Tsugaru-shamisen refers to both the Japanese genre of shamisen music originating from Tsugaru Peninsula in present-day Aomori Prefecture and the instrument it is performed with. It is performed throughout Japan, though associations with the area remain strong. Tsugaru-jamisen is considered the most recognized genre of shamisen music, and has enjoyed multiple periods of popularity in Japan. Sato used the particular music extensively in his film, with its sound essentially dictating the rhythm here.

Without the nearly 10 different Hollywood studios that Los Angeles-based striking writers picket across, some WGA members in East Coast cities turned their attention to shutting down nearby productions at the onset of the strike in May and June, including Andrew Saito, a TV writer and playwright based in New York.
“There aren’t a lot of studios there, so a lot of the focus was on shutting down locations in the various areas of New York [City], in New Jersey, upstate New York, some in Massachusetts [and] in Connecticut,” Saito told TheWrap on the picket line in Los Angeles on Tuesday. “It was a very different strategy and feel just because of the geography and there are fewer of us out there.”
Despite the smaller number of WGA members involved in efforts to close down ongoing productions amid the strike, Saito recalled the “incredible” amount of solidarity at work between writers and other industry members.

Browsing the shelves of Our Price in the 90s, I remember seeing anime for the first time. One of the few things I miss about VHS is the larger cases that allowed for some very cool artwork, and the Manga line of releases were like nothing I’d seen before. Over the years, I ended up seeing things like Streetfighter II: The Animated Movie, Akira and Ghost in the Shell, but one that has evaded me even up to this point is Golgo 13. Having no context for these films, I had no idea that the anime version I saw on those shelves of VHS tapes was pre-dated by a live action adaptation of the manga.

The manga series the film is based on began in 1968, and still runs to this day, even after the death in 2021 of its creator Takao Saito.

Match #1: Champagne Singh & Shera def. Heath & Rhino The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:
Rhino goes for the Gore on Shera but Singh trips him up from the outside. Shera begins to wear down Rhino. Moments later, Rhino creates an opening but Shera knocks Heath off the apron to prevent him from making the tag. Rhino hits Singh with a belly-to-belly suplex, allowing him to finally make the tag to Heath. The pace quickens as Heath clotheslines Shera over the top rope to the floor. Singh pins Heath with his feet on the ropes and an assist from Shera to win.

A gentle stillness revives itself at the end and beginning of every breath, its vibrancy tangible when tuned into its frequency at each precise moment. It is a calmness, a small measure of peace, seldom found under the neon buzz of a megacity such as Tokyo or any given metropolis around the globe wherever the urban frenzy is ceaseless. Life far removed from time's boorish grasp – its frantic march toward the inevitable, its relentless demand for toil and progress – finds a gentler purpose: an opportunity for spiritual detoxification, a glimmer of strength to face the past head-on. For lurking in the periphery, obscured by shadow, are the ghosts and demons in constant pursuit, and no amount of running can keep them at bay forever. In “Side by Side”, Chihiro Ito painstakingly curates this serene tapestry in which Kentaro Sakaguchi's Miyama eschews his trauma and makes his escape.

Kenji Mizoguchi was a brilliant and influential filmmaker. Besides his movies being visual marvels, he was a master of emotional storytelling. The projects of Mizoguchi were also vey much ahead of their time, especially regarding the themes and issues they often tackled. Much of the artist’s work is character studies of women forced into suffering and pushing through struggles in Japanese society. He frequently worked with brilliant actress Kinuyo Tanaka who starred in a substantial amount of his filmography. Gender inequality and sexism in Japan date far back in history and remain an issue there to this day. An advocate of equality, Mizoguchi would be one of the first Japanese directors to raise awareness of these issues while tearing down the facade that Japanese society is perfect, all while giving a voice to those forced to comply with social injustices. Such matters are brought to the forefront in one...
