In this HorRHIFFic special interview, I sat down with director Nicholas Bain and his producer Jamie Roberts to chat about their film Voice of Shadows, which screened on Sunday, March 3rd as part of this year’s Romford Horror Film Festival.
The film, which stars Guillermo Blanco and Corrine Mica, sees a young working class woman stands to inherit an estate if she and her boyfriend abide by a set of bizarre stipulations.

Jamie Roberts’s Netflix documentary film, Vjeran Tomic: The Spider-Man of Paris, sheds some light on the adventurous life of the titular person who masterfully pulled off a grand heist at the Paris Museum of Modern Arts in 2010. Vjeran Tomic, who was the mastermind behind this audacious theft that almost no one had the courage to commit, himself narrated how his life of crime had begun and what led him to do it. Vjeran Tomic is a man with a dauntless attitude and a daring talent for climbing the tallest buildings in the city, which made him known as the real-life Spider-Man of Paris.
Vjeran Tomic: The Spider-Man of Paris is indeed a vertigo-triggering film as it showcases some real-life footage of how a thief like Tomic used to climb the tallest buildings in the town and jump from one to another. Sometimes, he walked on the railings, which totally...

“Escape From Kabul Airport,” a documentary airing on BBC Two in September, will tell the inside story of the 18 days in August 2021, when the U.S. withdrew its troops from Afghanistan, and the subsequent evacuation of thousands of Afghan citizens from Kabul airport after the Taliban seized the city.
The documentary is an Amos production for the BBC, in association with HBO and in collaboration with Arte France. It is produced by Emmy and BAFTA-winning Dan Reed (“Leaving Neverland”) and directed by Jamie Roberts (“Four Hours At The Capitol”).
The film combines never before seen on-the-ground archival footage from the evacuation, alongside interviews with evacuees, eye-witnesses, U.S. Marines and Taliban fighters.
Roberts said: “When the images of the chaotic Kabul airlift flashed across the news I immediately wanted to know more about what this historic moment looked and felt like on the ground, through the eyes of the people who were there.

It’s arguably too soon for “Four Hours at the Capitol,” though not because the January 6th insurrection is too taboo a topic. Rather, the 92-minute HBO documentary has little to say that hasn’t already been said over the last nine months, and little by way of factual or aesthetic detail that might illuminate new angles on the day’s harrowing events. There are a few intriguing exceptions, though these are not only fleeting, but also sandwiched between larger narrative slices that feel almost perspective-less in their approach to fresh wounds and extremely recent history.
A sense of stillness and normalcy permeates the introduction, as a police officer recounts the day’s unassuming start. However, given the film’s tight focus on a specific window of time — as evidenced by its title — things quickly go off the rails. Through a series of on-scene videos, and through first-hand interviews with officers,...

When a group of insurrectionists took the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6 in order to disrupt the counting of electoral votes from the 2020 presidential election, one might have expected the events of the day to resonate, months later, far more than they do. The attack seems at times to be rapidly fading from our cultural memory, a testament to the efficacy of one party’s attempts to hand-wave it away as an enthusiastic and passionate protest that lost control.
Into this cultural forgetting strides HBO’s “Four Hours at the Capitol,” a documentary directed by Jamie Roberts. This documentary presents a tick-tock of the events of the day, complete with so much harrowing footage that it’s hard to watch (and hard to believe Roberts and executive producer Dan Reed were able to marshal). The imagery of destruction and assault is powerful on its own terms; it’s in building the...

At least one of the men responsible for the terror attack in London on Saturday appeared in a documentary about Islamic extremists that aired briefly on Channel 4, “The Jihadis Next Door.” The film was directed by Jamie Roberts, and has a score of 7/10 on IMDb. A 2016 Guardian review called it “a bone-chilling documentary…important and brave.”

Update: Zdf Enterprises, Fisher King, BeIN and Netflix deals; Fmi acquires War Child doc sales rights.
The blurring of the lines between film and TV as well as the platforms on which both features and series are distributed was a recurrent theme at Mipcom on Tuesday.
At a panel on the the crossover of talent from film to TV, speakers See-Saw Film‘s COO Hakan Kousetta, eOne Television president of global scripted programming Pancho Mansfield and Wme Img partner Chris Rice were unanimous that there was no turning back the trend.
“We’ve stopped looking at them as different,” said Rice, who helped package the BBC’s The Night Manager and Canal Plus, Sky Italia and HBO’s The Young Pope. “Virtually ever actor and director has come round to this. It’s a great time to tell stories.”
Kousetta said See-Saw Films had expanded into TV from a feature film base “accidentally” after Australian Oscar and Cannes...
