1975 to 1987 employee at the Federal Labor Office, lastly head of the career counseling department at the Deggendorf Labor Office.
Since 1969 member of the CSU; active in various executive committees of the Junge Union, Frauen-Union and the CSU, 1995 to 2005 district chairwoman of the CSU Fürstenfeldbruck. 1996 to 2004 county councilor.
Member of the Bundestag since March 24, 1987; April 21, 1989 to January 18, 1991, Federal Minister for Regional Planning, Building and Urban Development, January 18, 1991 to May 5, 1992, Federal Minister for Health; 1995 to 2002, financial policy spokeswoman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, 2002 to 2005, Vice Chairwoman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, since October 18, 2005, Vice President of the German Bundestag.
